Chapter 1

"Are you sure you want to do this, Quinn?"

Quinn Sullivan suppressed the conflicting emotions in her gaze and nodded.

She opened her phone and deleted her name from the electronic wedding invitation she had prepared, replacing it with Jasmine Shaw's.

Upon seeing that, her best friend, Stella Harper, glanced at her worriedly.

Once Quinn was done amending the invitation, she sent it to Stella.

"Have someone send this out the day before the wedding, and replace all the photos and videos with ones of Nicholas and Jasmine. I'll be leaving Heathridge on the day of the wedding," she said.

Once Stella left, Quinn spent some time looking out the window, unmoving from her spot.

She and Nicholas York had just held their engagement party eight hours ago. Amidst the well-wishes of many guests, she had thought that her long-awaited wedding with Nicholas would come quickly.

However, three hours ago, Quinn found that he had gotten into his car with a female celebrity from his company after the engagement party. She witnessed it through her phone, which had been left in his car.

Nicholas said, "I despised you so much when you broke up with me for money back then, Jasmine. But I promised you that I would save my wedding night for you.

"Just this once today, okay? I don't want to spend my first night with any woman who's not you."

His voice carried a slight hint of drunkenness, yet every word came from his heart. He even sounded as if he was about to cry.

Their actions grew more intimate in the car as Jasmine held Nicholas in her arms. She then started kissing his neck.

"I didn't leave you for the money back then, Nicholas. It was because I felt I wasn't good enough for you. I would've never let you go if I knew you'd end up marrying someone like Quinn," she said.

Nicholas was taken aback, but he soon happily pulled Jasmine into his embrace. "You're the only one for me even if I marry her, Jasmine."

Soon, Quinn could only hear their heavy breathing.

She chuckled bitterly as she took off the engagement ring from her finger.

The ring was a creation by Carlos Hued, her favorite designer.

Nicholas had spent more than six months abroad trying to convince Carlos to craft these one-of-a-kind engagement rings—all just to make Quinn happy.

She couldn't understand how someone who had always confessed his love for her could so quickly become involved with someone else.

Quinn spared one last glance at the wedding ring before tossing it into the trash can. She no longer wanted the ring—and she no longer wanted Nicholas the same.

Since he loved Jasmine so much, Quinn would do him a favor and make the wedding, a month from now, his and Jasmine's.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of knocking.

Linda Boston, a household staff member, entered with a glass of hot milk in her hand. "Mr. York called earlier and instructed us to get you a glass of hot milk, Ms. Sullivan. He also mentioned that he has a surprise for you when he gets back, so he asked you not to sleep just yet."

Quinn gestured for Linda to place the glass on the table before dismissing her. The milk was still steaming, just like every night before.

Ever since Nicholas knew she had trouble sleeping at night, he would personally warm up a glass of milk for her daily. He would smile happily whenever she finished the milk.

At the height of his career, he would announce their relationship to the public, telling everyone how much he loved Quinn. He would turn down important deals time and again for her, even if it meant paying huge penalties.

But what moved her the most was the fact that Nicholas, someone who had never set foot in the kitchen, could warm up milk for her every day for years without fail.

The tip of Quinn's fingers touched the glass. It was hot, yet all she felt was the numbing coldness in her heart.

It turned out that grand gestures might not always mean true love. She had never been able to accept betrayal.

Quinn wondered what Nicholas' expression would be when he saw the bride at the wedding in a month's time.

As soon as the clock struck 12, she received a call from Nicholas. He shouted excitedly, "Look out of the window, Quinn!"

Quinn instinctively looked out the floor-to-ceiling window. The sky was lit up by countless fireworks, only stopping half an hour later.

The door burst open, and Nicholas ran over to wrap his arms around her waist. He smiled softly as he asked, "Do you like the gift I prepared for you?"

His love for her always seemed so high-profile, as if he wanted everyone to know about it. Unfortunately, it was all fake.

Nicholas leaned his head onto Quinn's shoulders and nuzzled affectionately.

"It's like I'm dreaming now, Quinn. We really got engaged—this day finally came!" His words were filled with happiness.

She might have thought everything that happened in the car was just her imagination if it weren't for the faint jasmine scent on him.

Quinn got up and pushed away Nicholas' hand. As she looked at him, she happened to notice the necklace on his neck.

He had been wearing it ever since they first met. On the inside of the necklace, a white flower was engraved.

Quinn used to be curious about it, but Nicholas explained that white was his favorite color, and the flower design was something he picked at random.

It was only now that she realized the white flower symbolized Jasmine.

Jasmine was ultimately sentenced to prison for embezzlement, illegal fundraising, and other crimes. Nicholas visited her on her first day behind bars. He looked at her coldly."I wasn't going to let you off so easily, so you should thank your lucky stars you ended up in prison. Pray that you spend a few more years in there—I don't know what I'd do to you otherwise," he said. His icy gaze made her hysterically shriek, "You knew that old fart was bad news all along, didn't you? You deliberately made me fall into his clutches!"Nicholas had introduced Jasmine to a director before leaving Heathridge. She'd happily gone to meet the director, but the man had taken advantage of her. She'd thought Nicholas had been in the dark about the whole thing, so she hadn't dared to tell him about it after it had happened. She hadn't wanted him to scorn her. Only now did she realize he'd set her up!"Of course. Did you think I would be kind enough to help you? I wouldn't have lost Quinn if not for y

Jasmine suddenly started laughing as she clutched her cheek. "I would rather take such a roundabout way to get at Quinn than spread those videos of you, Nicholas. How can you treat me like this when I love you so deeply?"What is it about her that bewitches you so? Have you forgotten how you were the one to seek me out when I returned to Heathridge? You wanted me to join your company, and you told me you've never forgotten about me. I wouldn't be in this predicament if not for your sake, Nicholas!"She was about to lose her mind, but Nicholas didn't take pity on her because of that. On the contrary, his hatred for her grew."Don't think I don't know you orchestrated our so-called chance reunion. Also, wasn't I your whole reason for returning to Heathridge?" he spat.A hint of diffidence flashed in Jasmine's eyes at having her lies exposed.Nicholas continued, "I'll give you one last chance, Jasmine. Step up and explain everything—settle this matter, and I can let you off the hook

Nicholas could only stand by and watch as things played out. He'd already seen through Gabriel's feelings for Quinn the last time they'd seen each other, so he wasn't surprised by this. What surprised him was that Quinn hadn't evaded Gabriel. She'd allowed him to hold and kiss her. His mind went blank. He couldn't believe what had just happened."Stay away from her! You don't deserve to touch her!" he snapped. He charged at Gabriel with a raised fist, wanting to hit him.Gabriel grabbed his arm with one hand while holding Quinn with the other. "What right do you have to stick your nose in my business with Quinn? Who do you think you are?"He flung Nicholas aside. The latter stumbled and fell to the ground, scratching his palm in the process. Nicholas looked at Quinn, his eyes turning red with grievance as he held up his palm. "It hurts, Quinn."Whenever he'd gotten injured in the past, she would gently tend to his wounds."You deserve it. Drop the pitiful act!" Gabriel stood befo

Nicholas' gaze no longer had the tenderness it had once held. To him, Jasmine was no more than a nemesis now.He knew she'd come bearing ill intentions when his assistant had called and told him she'd followed him. He didn't expect her to pull such a dirty trick—she'd secretly recorded them together!"I don't want to hurt you, Nicholas. I just don't understand why you're being so stubborn when things have already turned out like this. I promise I won't cause any more trouble for Quinn as long as you marry me."Besides, you and I were together before you met Quinn. How can you betray our bond for her sake?" Jasmine cried. Her eyes turned red, and she held Nicholas' shoulders tightly as she shook him.He scoffed and shoved her hands off. "You're the one who betrayed us first, Jasmine. Have you forgotten the money you took from my parents?""How do you know Quinn wasn't with you for your money, then?" Jasmine grew agitated. She looked at Nicholas pleadingly as tears glimmered in her

Nicholas ran after Quinn when he saw her get into the car to leave. She didn't stop for him, though. He watched as the car drove off into the distance, and he tripped and fell. The ring on his hand fell off and rolled into one of the bushes by the roadside. He immediately scrambled to his feet to search through them. The branches and thorns left scratches on his hands, but he didn't seem to notice them. After a long time, Nicholas clutched the ring after finding it and laughed in agitation. Slowly, tears streamed down his face as he laughed. He could find the ring again, but could he do the same for Quinn's love?Meanwhile, Quinn parked the car outside Steven's apartment building. Gabriel stood before Steven, looking glum and despondent as the latter berated him. "Your parents called and said you only have three days to tell them what they want to hear."If you can't, you're going home to marry the person they've picked for you!" With that, Steven glanced at Quinn out of the corner

Quinn stepped forward to say something when she saw how frenzied Nicholas was, but Gabriel beat her to it. The crisp sound of a slap rang out, seeming even more pronounced by the quiet riverside.Nicholas gaped at Gabriel in disbelief while cupping his face. This was the first time someone had laid a hand on him in his life.Gabriel snorted disdainfully at the look on his face. "Quinn and I have known each other since birth—what do the few years you two had together mean compared to that?"Besides, isn't Jasmine Shaw your beloved? How can you be shameless enough to want Quinn back when you destroyed her for Jasmine's sake? What's your relationship with Quinn now?"Nicholas parted his lips at that but couldn't say a word. What was his relationship with Quinn? He was supposed to be her fiancé, but she no longer wanted him.He looked at Quinn tearfully at that thought and showed her his red cheek. "If hitting me will help appease you, I'm fine letting him slap me as many times as you
