Chapter 4

Author: Washing Wheat
Secondly, I believed I'd never cross paths with Nicole's father again. So, it just didn't feel necessary to tell Megan about him. As such, I just gave a vague explanation by saying that I failed to get in touch with Nicole's father after getting pregnant.

However, Megan probably misunderstood the situation. She probably assumed that Nicole's father was a scumbag who just hit it and quit it. Out of consideration for my feelings, she never probed into the specifics either.

In the end, that brought us to this awkward moment.

Even though it wasn't nice to deceive my best friend, I didn't have the guts to reveal Nicole's true identity to Megan or Frederick out of the blue.

After all, I did not know Frederick well. If we couldn't get along, Megan and I might even end up having a falling out.

As Megan and I had a few drinks in the evening, Frederick offered to chauffeur us. As he drove northward, Megan pressed her cheek against the car window and exclaimed, "You're going the wrong way. This isn't the way to Jenna's place!"

"I'm giving you a ride back home first. I will be heading out later, so I won't be going home."

That upset Megan. She grumbled, "We wouldn't have gotten you to give us a ride if I had known you weren't going home. Jenna and I could've found somewhere else to hang out at."

Frederick shot her a look but did not reply. He pulled the car to a stop steadily at the front gate of their residence, and Megan exited the car unwillingly.

Since it felt awkward for me to be with Frederick alone, I, too, shifted to get out of the car. "My place isn't too far from here, so I can just get a cab from here. Wouldn't want to trouble you if you have someth—"

"It's no trouble. It's on the way."

Megan nodded. "He's right. Just let him give you a ride. It's not like he has any actual business to attend to in the middle of the night anyway."

I had no choice but to accept the offer. Otherwise, it would just seem forced if I kept refusing.

"Where to?"

"The residential area on Joy Street."

Frederick took a glance at me through the rearview mirror. His eyes were twinkling with glee. "Didn't you say you didn't want to call it a night yet? I'll take you where you want to go now."

"Oh, no need for that. Megan was just kidding earlier. Thank you very much to you and Megan for today," I said politely.

"Don't be a stranger. Don't you know who I am?"

I never expected him to ask me about it so straightforwardly. Instantly, my breathing quickened. Before I could even answer him, he uttered a confirmation, "So you do remember."

"I-I don't understand what you're going on about."

"Liar." Frederick lowered his voice and continued, "Didn't Megan tell you what I used to do for work? I'm an expert at reading people's emotions just by listening to their breathing."

Upon hearing that, I held my breath instinctively. Nevertheless, he then burst out in laughter. "Now, that was a lie."

"Frederick!"

"There, this is more like you. You've been acting way too tense since you saw me today."

Worried about giving anything else away, I resorted to keeping my mouth shut this time. Thankfully, Frederick did not tease me further along the way.

After arriving back home, I played a game with Megan. It was only after the game that I finally dragged myself into the shower. When I hung my clothes out to dry, I happened to notice the SUV downstairs. It had not moved an inch since Frederick pulled over to drop me off.

After hesitating for a while, I put a jacket over my shoulders and headed downstairs. The car engine was still running when I knocked on the car window.

"Frederick?"

The car window rolled down, revealing the steely expression on Frederick's face.

"Is there something wrong with your car?" I asked.

"No," he answered.

"Why are you still here, then? Didn't you say you were meeting with some friends?"

"I'm not meeting with any friends. It was just an excuse I came up with so that I could give you a ride home, just the two of us."

The air came to a standstill. I pressed my lips together. For some reason, the anger and frustration that I had kept hidden for far too long flared up. "Do you just love making up excuses?"

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"You know exactly what I mean."

After saying that, I turned around to leave. However, he furrowed his brows and grabbed my hand. "Make yourself clear."

"That urgent task."

It was only at this moment that he recalled the words he had said to me all those years ago. In a hoarse voice, he explained, "I didn't lie to you about that. I really was notified of it at the last minute. I had only just returned home on leave when the emergency crisis struck.

"I was out there doing rescue work the entire time."

"What about your number, then? No one picked up when I called that number at all!"

"When we're out on duty, we have to hand our phones i—"

Before he finished his sentence, realization hit him. "You tried to reach me?"

The boxing studio was open for business two months later. Frederick brought Nicole along for the opening ceremony. She was perched on his shoulders, and she was absolutely buzzing with excitement. They even opened a class at the studio specifically for children, which Nicole participated in for a good part of the afternoon. While she trained, Frederick stayed by her side, offering guidance while grumbling sarcastically, "As a girl, you should know how to fight, at least a little. That way, you won't end up getting played by a scumbag, just like your mother did." Distracted, Nicole asked, "What is a 'scumbag', Uncle Fred?""A scumbag is a very bad man." Immediately, Nicole threw a flurry of punches in the air. Her hands were still wrapped in her boxing gloves. "Stay away, bad men. I will protect Mommy!" "That's right. Let's protect Mommy together from now on." I could not comment on that.…At noon, both our families sat down together for lunch. This was also Nicole's f

That same evening, Frederick brought me back to his apartment. Before we went to bed at night, he asked out of the blue, "Was Nicky often sick growing up?" "Not exactly. She did fall sick quite frequently when she first started attending preschool, but it's been better lately," I answered. Frederick stayed silent for a long while, and then he tightened his arms around me. He remarked, "It must have been hard on you." Truth be told, it did not feel like that to me in the past. However, for some reason, a wave of sorrow washed over me once I heard those words. I was just about to reply when Frederick said through gritted teeth, "It's all that damn scumbag's fault. He'd better not bump into me in the future. Otherwise, I'm gonna emasculate him." At the end of the day, I still felt rather unwell. After having dinner, I drifted off to sleep. However, I was suddenly awakened by the sound of some furious knocks at the door. Frederick furrowed his brows, stroking my forehead to comfo

Megan's voice was so loud that it echoed through the room. Even though I clamped my hand over the speaker, it was useless. Before I could even respond, Frederick snatched my phone out of my hands. "Setting me up, are you? You'd better brace yourself first. You're dead meat." The line went quiet for a moment. Thereafter, Megan snapped, "Who are you? Why are you taking someone else's call? I was just wondering why I wasn't able to get in touch with my friend."I see—you were the one who took her phone away. Hand her phone back to her this instant, or I'm calling 911!" I was rendered speechless. Frederick ended the call, and a brief silence filled the room. I started, "Can we… Can we not go public with this just yet?""What are you trying to say? You want to keep me as your side piece?""That's not what I meant. I actually don't have many friends, so I don't want to lose Megan just because of this.""Why would our relationship affect your friendship in any way?" Frederick narr

Suddenly, Frederick pulled me into his arms. Shocked by the sudden turn of events, Megan leapt up from her seat. "You've got the wrong person. Belle is over there!" Nevertheless, Frederick's pace was frantic, and he had already disappeared from her sight. It wasn't until I was shoved into a car that I finally caught up with what was happening. As I struggled to sit back up, I asked, "Frederick? What are you doing here?" Frederick simply pressed in close. His frame loomed over me like a shadow. The backseat of the car was spacious, giving him plenty of room to do whatever he wanted. I could feel his breath on my neck, which sent shivers through me. Even my voice turned shaky. "What are you doing?" I asked. "Who were you planning on 'giving a shot' with?" "Giving a shot to what?""Jenna, I wanted to take things slow. But now, I don't think I can wait any longer." After he said that, I felt something hard against my lower abdomen. I struggled even harder. "You've got the

Megan was in my shop, complaining. "I have no idea what Fred has been up to lately. He has been MIA. Could he actually be in a relationship? Is he busy spending time with his girlfriend?"She fiddled with her phone as she spoke. "There—he's busted. Isn't this Fred?" After saying that, she turned her phone screen my way. It showed a selfie of a tanned-skinned woman beaming radiantly. In an unnoticeable corner was a familiar silhouette. His facial features couldn't be seen, but one could tell he stood tall and straight. At one glance, I could tell he was Frederick. He had probably only ended up in the shot coincidentally. "I just knew I'd be able to find something from Belle's Instagram. Just as I expected, they have been spending time together the last few days. Call me Detective Megan!"Megan giggled. Then, she continued, "Jen, considering how capable they both are, do you reckon I'd be implicated if they had any arguments in the future? Yikes. That's such a scary thought."A

I choked on my words and looked away, keeping a straight face. Frederick raised a brow, scanning the interior of my shop before picking up the black wireless bra that fell yesterday."I'll go with this," he said. "Which size are you after?"After I posed that question, I noticed him fixing his gaze on a particular area of my body. My face flushed red immediately, and I gave him a shove. "This is not for sale. I refuse to sell it to you, okay?" Frederick grabbed my hand. "What's going on with you?"The moment he asked that, a crisp voice came from the entrance. "Mommy, your precious Nicky is back!" Right after that, the door flung open. My gaze met with my mom's while Nicole locked eyes with Frederick. The atmosphere turned eerily silent. In the end, it was my sharp-witted mother who first snapped back to her senses. Cautiously, she asked, "Should I leave, or should I take Nicky with me as well?"I was so flushed that I felt like I was burning up from within. I broke free
