Chapter 1

My best friend, Megan Hahn, was at Cooper's Barbecue, cradling a beer bottle in her arms as she bawled her eyes out and wailed, "I wanted to introduce my elder brother to you after he returned, so that Nicky can become my very own niece.

"But he's unable to have children, which makes him no different from a useless piece of trash. How could I do you dirty like that when we're best friends?"

As she said all that, her phone rang.

I took a glance at her phone and saw that it was Frederick Hahn calling. Megan was so wasted that she was already face-first on the table, completely unaware that her phone was ringing.

I hesitated for a moment. However, when her phone rang persistently for the third time, I answered it on her behalf.

"Mom asks you to get your ass back here, if you're still alive and breathing."

His voice was deep and husky. It sounded quite mesmerizing. I pinched my earlobe, which felt strangely warm for no reason.

"Hello there, I'm Megan's friend. We are at Cooper's Barbecue. Would you be able to come over and pick her up?"

Given Megan's current condition, it was going to be a struggle to get her home today. After all, I had quite a bit to drink too. It would obviously be a lot more convenient if someone could come and pick her up.

Before the man on the phone could even respond, Megan, who had passed out face-down on the table, "came back to life" all of a sudden.

"Oh, poor Fred. He joined the military academy at such a young age, and he's still a virgin after all these years. Now that he's in this predicament, no one will ever want him…"

Suddenly, the call went eerily quiet. The awkwardness was enough to sober me up a little. I explained, "She really had quite a bit to drink…"

"Give me the address."

"8 South Avenue."

Then, he hung up.

Previously, I had heard Megan talking about her elder brother. He was a tough and strong-willed guy, someone she had idolized since she was a child.

However, when Megan and I first met, her elder brother had already been deployed elsewhere. So, I had never met him before. It wasn't until he was discharged from military service a week ago that I learned he'd been severely injured.

When the time was about right, I helped Megan to the entrance to wait. There, I saw a black vehicle cruising toward us from a distance.

Then, a tall man alighted. He was dressed sharply in his work uniform, looking broad-shouldered and long-legged. However, I couldn't get a clear look at his face. All I could see was his silhouette.

At the same time, a video call request popped up on my phone.

"Is it Nicky?" Megan asked, dazedly peering at my phone.

"I hope nothing serious happened, considering that she's looking for you out of nowhere at this hour. Hurry up and answer the call. Fred is already here."

As she said that, she waved at the man a short distance away.

Deep down, I, too, was a little worried about my daughter, Nicole Sawyer. I didn't even stop to greet Megan's brother. Once he came a little closer, I hurried to the side to answer the video call.

Almost immediately, Nicole's face appeared on the screen. "Mommy!" she greeted me.

Upon seeing her beaming face, I finally let out a sigh of relief. "Why are you still awake?" I asked.

"Because I miss you, Mommy!"

Then, my mother's voice came from the other end of the call. "I took her to the countryside to catch prawns today, and she had a whole heap of fun, so much so that she refused to go to bed after getting home and insisted on video-calling you instead.

"Are you still out? Why aren't you home yet?"

"I came out to meet up with Megan for a bit."

My mother had brought Nicole back to my hometown for a few days, giving me a rare bit of peace and quiet.

"Is Megs there too?"

Nicole squeezed her face back into the frame. "Mommy, I want to speak with Megs too!"

I turned to take a quick look at the entrance. The tall man had already picked Megan up and slung her over his shoulder. He tossed her right into the SUV parked at the side, as if she were just a sandbag.

Yes, he tossed her into the car. I pursed my lips briefly. He was indeed… behaving like a tough guy.

Nicole's arrival was never part of the plan. Four years ago, I went down to a bar to drown my sorrows right after a breakup.

That was where I met a man. He was the definition of stoic and sexy. Everything about his appearance, down to the way he breathed, was exactly what I looked for in a man.

Fueled by liquid courage, I slept with him. Surprisingly, our chemistry that night was completely off the charts.

The boxing studio was open for business two months later. Frederick brought Nicole along for the opening ceremony. She was perched on his shoulders, and she was absolutely buzzing with excitement. They even opened a class at the studio specifically for children, which Nicole participated in for a good part of the afternoon. While she trained, Frederick stayed by her side, offering guidance while grumbling sarcastically, "As a girl, you should know how to fight, at least a little. That way, you won't end up getting played by a scumbag, just like your mother did." Distracted, Nicole asked, "What is a 'scumbag', Uncle Fred?""A scumbag is a very bad man." Immediately, Nicole threw a flurry of punches in the air. Her hands were still wrapped in her boxing gloves. "Stay away, bad men. I will protect Mommy!" "That's right. Let's protect Mommy together from now on." I could not comment on that.…At noon, both our families sat down together for lunch. This was also Nicole's f

That same evening, Frederick brought me back to his apartment. Before we went to bed at night, he asked out of the blue, "Was Nicky often sick growing up?" "Not exactly. She did fall sick quite frequently when she first started attending preschool, but it's been better lately," I answered. Frederick stayed silent for a long while, and then he tightened his arms around me. He remarked, "It must have been hard on you." Truth be told, it did not feel like that to me in the past. However, for some reason, a wave of sorrow washed over me once I heard those words. I was just about to reply when Frederick said through gritted teeth, "It's all that damn scumbag's fault. He'd better not bump into me in the future. Otherwise, I'm gonna emasculate him." At the end of the day, I still felt rather unwell. After having dinner, I drifted off to sleep. However, I was suddenly awakened by the sound of some furious knocks at the door. Frederick furrowed his brows, stroking my forehead to comfo

Megan's voice was so loud that it echoed through the room. Even though I clamped my hand over the speaker, it was useless. Before I could even respond, Frederick snatched my phone out of my hands. "Setting me up, are you? You'd better brace yourself first. You're dead meat." The line went quiet for a moment. Thereafter, Megan snapped, "Who are you? Why are you taking someone else's call? I was just wondering why I wasn't able to get in touch with my friend."I see—you were the one who took her phone away. Hand her phone back to her this instant, or I'm calling 911!" I was rendered speechless. Frederick ended the call, and a brief silence filled the room. I started, "Can we… Can we not go public with this just yet?""What are you trying to say? You want to keep me as your side piece?""That's not what I meant. I actually don't have many friends, so I don't want to lose Megan just because of this.""Why would our relationship affect your friendship in any way?" Frederick narr

Suddenly, Frederick pulled me into his arms. Shocked by the sudden turn of events, Megan leapt up from her seat. "You've got the wrong person. Belle is over there!" Nevertheless, Frederick's pace was frantic, and he had already disappeared from her sight. It wasn't until I was shoved into a car that I finally caught up with what was happening. As I struggled to sit back up, I asked, "Frederick? What are you doing here?" Frederick simply pressed in close. His frame loomed over me like a shadow. The backseat of the car was spacious, giving him plenty of room to do whatever he wanted. I could feel his breath on my neck, which sent shivers through me. Even my voice turned shaky. "What are you doing?" I asked. "Who were you planning on 'giving a shot' with?" "Giving a shot to what?""Jenna, I wanted to take things slow. But now, I don't think I can wait any longer." After he said that, I felt something hard against my lower abdomen. I struggled even harder. "You've got the

Megan was in my shop, complaining. "I have no idea what Fred has been up to lately. He has been MIA. Could he actually be in a relationship? Is he busy spending time with his girlfriend?"She fiddled with her phone as she spoke. "There—he's busted. Isn't this Fred?" After saying that, she turned her phone screen my way. It showed a selfie of a tanned-skinned woman beaming radiantly. In an unnoticeable corner was a familiar silhouette. His facial features couldn't be seen, but one could tell he stood tall and straight. At one glance, I could tell he was Frederick. He had probably only ended up in the shot coincidentally. "I just knew I'd be able to find something from Belle's Instagram. Just as I expected, they have been spending time together the last few days. Call me Detective Megan!"Megan giggled. Then, she continued, "Jen, considering how capable they both are, do you reckon I'd be implicated if they had any arguments in the future? Yikes. That's such a scary thought."A

I choked on my words and looked away, keeping a straight face. Frederick raised a brow, scanning the interior of my shop before picking up the black wireless bra that fell yesterday."I'll go with this," he said. "Which size are you after?"After I posed that question, I noticed him fixing his gaze on a particular area of my body. My face flushed red immediately, and I gave him a shove. "This is not for sale. I refuse to sell it to you, okay?" Frederick grabbed my hand. "What's going on with you?"The moment he asked that, a crisp voice came from the entrance. "Mommy, your precious Nicky is back!" Right after that, the door flung open. My gaze met with my mom's while Nicole locked eyes with Frederick. The atmosphere turned eerily silent. In the end, it was my sharp-witted mother who first snapped back to her senses. Cautiously, she asked, "Should I leave, or should I take Nicky with me as well?"I was so flushed that I felt like I was burning up from within. I broke free
