SELENE

Silence fell like a shroud over the room.

Vivian looked down at her hands.

Clara shifted her weight near the door.

Evelyn’s face stayed cold—but there was something flickering behind her eyes.

And Leila? She looked like a girl trying to breathe through a wildfire.

“Because I loved him,” Leila said suddenly, her voice cracking. “Because I still do.”

I stopped.

“We didn’t plan this,” she went on, her voice rising like a tide she couldn’t stop. “I didn’t go looking for Orion, Selene. I ran into him after that Council raid, when Zarek sent me out to handle patrol disputes in the north. Orion had wounded warriors. I helped them. That was the first time.”

She paused, swallowing hard.

“He didn’t threaten me. He didn’t ask anything of me. He just… listened. And he saw me—not as Zarek’s sister, not as some political pawn—but me.”
