Chapter 2

Author: Call and I'll Come
At 10:30 pm, I parked my car on the side of the road across from Starlight Avenue Residences.

Then, I rolled down the window, lit a cigarette, and called my buddy, Daxton Covey. Daxton lived in an apartment next to the complex, and we often played basketball together.

"Hey, Geoff, it's Thanksgiving! Shouldn't you be spending time with your mom? What do you want with me?"

"Daxton, grab the baseball bat from your car and meet me downstairs at Block 8 of Starlight Avenue. Now."

Hearing my icy tone, Daxton didn't ask any questions. "I'll be there in five."

After hanging up, I took out my phone and opened the smart home app for our apartment.

Leah had always complained that smart devices could compromise our privacy, but I was always paranoid that I'd forgotten to turn off the gas before leaving home, so I'd insisted on installing a full set of smart home devices.

I tapped into the robot vacuum's control panel. The screen read, "Device error. Cleaning paused."

I frowned. I'd made sure the apartment was spotless before leaving. There was no way a cable or some random clutter could have jammed it.

So, I tapped on the robot vacuum's live snapshot feature. The image buffered for two seconds before loading.

The camera's low angle, combined with the fact that the living room's main lights were off and only the projector was on, made the image rather dim. But I could still make out what was there.

The object jamming the vacuum's brush roller was a black men's athletic quick-dry T-shirt. It definitely wasn't mine. I didn't wear that brand.

Beside the T-shirt, on the rug near the couch, lay a woman's blouse, carelessly tossed aside. The material was white silk.

I zoomed in and stared hard at the collar of that blouse. It was identical to the one Leah had been wearing in the selfie she'd sent me from what was supposed to be a hotel in Brockdale just ten minutes ago.

My stomach churned violently as a wave of nausea surged up in me.

I took a screenshot, closed the app, and sent Leah a cropped close-up image of the white blouse. "Didn't you take this blouse to Brockdale? I remember you were wearing it when you left yesterday."

A minute later, Leah replied.

"Oh, that one. I thought it looked a little wrinkled, so I changed into a blue one right before I left yesterday. I probably just tossed this one on the couch without thinking. What's wrong?"

"It's nothing. I was checking the security camera just now and noticed the blouse had fallen onto the floor."

"Well, I guess Micah probably knocked it off by accident while grabbing something. Honey, don't worry about it. I'll tidy everything up when I get back from my business trip."

A while later, someone yanked open the car door.

Daxton climbed into the passenger seat, panting, with an actual metal baseball bat in his hand. "What the hell's going on? I thought you went to your parents' house! Are we out to catch someone cheating? Who is it?"

I handed him my phone, my voice ice-cold.

"Leah."

That was the last time I ever saw Leah.Eventually, I heard what became of her through the gossip circulating among people who knew her.Unable to make a living in this city and with no income and a taste for extravagant spending, she soon found herself hounded by debt collectors over the online loans she'd taken out to buy luxury goods. With nowhere else to turn, she had no choice but to return to her hometown.Apparently, her parents had even dipped into their retirement savings to help cover her debts. Now, she worked at a small factory in a small town, earning just 2,200 dollars a month and drifting through life aimlessly. As for Micah, once the incident spread through the industry, he, too, was unable to find a decent job. Rumor had it that he'd gone off to another city to take whatever odd jobs he could find.As for me, life didn't stop just because one terrible woman was out of it. If anything, it got even better. Two months after I kicked Leah out, a project I led turned

The next day was a workday, but I took the day off. Instead of going to the office, I headed to the mall.I picked out a firmer, more comfortable latex mattress for myself, bought a brand-new bedding set in a dark gray Morandi palette, and got some fir-scented diffusers and minimalist decorations. It was my life, after all. There was no reason to punish myself over a piece of trash. At around 2:00 pm, my phone started vibrating nonstop. It was Leah calling.I declined the call outright and promptly blocked her number. Before long, a message from a former colleague popped up.I used to work in the same industry as Leah, just in a different company. It was a small circle, so we had some mutual acquaintances. My former colleague sent me a shocked reaction sticker. "Damn! What happened between you and Leah? Her company is in absolute chaos today!"I replied calmly, "What kind of chaos?"He sent me a long voice message, his voice brimming with barely contained excitement over the g

At 11:30 pm, the hallway of Starlight Avenue Residences was anything but quiet. The arrival of the police, combined with the commotion earlier, had drawn several neighbors out of their apartments. They poked their heads through their open doors, eager to watch the drama unfold.Leah, wearing that wrinkled white blouse, struggled to drag the large black garbage bag I'd given her out the front door, her head hanging in shame.Micah, meanwhile, walked straight toward the elevator with his backpack slung over his shoulder, his face dark and sullen. He didn't say a word or even spare Leah a glance. As the neighbors whispered and pointed fingers, they stepped into the elevator. Just before the doors closed, Leah shot me one last venomous look.I met her gaze without the slightest concern, then slammed the security door shut with a resounding bang. Finally, I had some peace and quiet.Daxton let out a long sigh of relief and leaned the baseball bat against the corner of the wall. "That

"Geoff, please! I'm begging you. Don't kick me out!"Seeing what was happening, Leah dropped to her knees with a thud and clung desperately to my leg, throwing every last shred of dignity out the window."I really have nowhere else to go! I spent my entire paycheck this month on handbags, and I've maxed out my credit cards. I don't even have enough money to stay at a budget hotel tonight!"She looked up, trying to win me over with the same pitiful, helpless look she'd used on me so many times before."For the sake of the five years we've been together, please let me sleep on the couch just for tonight. I'll move out tomorrow. I promise!"I looked down at the woman before me. For five years, she'd always used this pathetic act to get things out of me. She'd asked me to cover her rent, buy her designer handbags so she could show off, and even pay for her younger brother's car."For the sake of the five years we've been together?" I echoed, letting out a cold laugh. "When you brou

When Micah heard Leah dumping all the blame on him, he let out a cold laugh from the bed. Without the slightest embarrassment, he threw back the covers and leisurely pulled on his T-shirt. There was no fear in his eyes, only a hint of mockery. "Leah, stop trying to pin this on me."Micah stood up and straightened his clothes, his voice hard and cold."You're the one who told me you and your boyfriend had fallen out of love a long time ago and were about to break up! You're the one who messaged me in the middle of the night, saying you felt lonely all by yourself in the apartment and asking me to come over and spend Thanksgiving with you!"He turned to me and shrugged, his tone carrying a hint of defiance and indifference. "Look, man, this really isn't on me. She told me she'd bought this apartment outright and that if I got together with her, I'd be the man of the house someday. I got played, too. I had no idea you'd be back today."I looked at this ambitious young man in his e

The smart lock let out a sharp beep as it unlocked, the sound especially jarring in the dead of night. All the color drained from Leah's face on the video call. With a clatter, her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. The screen flipped over, turning the image completely black, and the call was abruptly disconnected.I gave her no time to react or even get dressed. Gripping the door handle, I pressed it down hard and shoved the front door open. The living room's main lights were off, and a classic romance film was playing on the enormous projector screen.Half-eaten takeout boxes were scattered messily across the coffee table, along with two wine glasses that still had half a glass of red wine each. The air was thick with a mingled smell of alcohol, perfume, and the musky scent of sex. The smell made my stomach churn.Daxton strode in behind me. With a cold sneer, he immediately raised his phone and started recording.I crossed the living room without slowing down and k
