Author: Call and I'll Come
It usually took 40 minutes to drive from my parents' house to my rented apartment at Starlight Avenue Residences downtown.

As the roads were unusually clear tonight, I pressed down hard on the accelerator.

While waiting at a traffic light, I opened the delivery app.

My girlfriend, Leah Suthers, and I shared a account. We usually ordered takeout through it to meet the minimum spending requirements for discounts or to use our vouchers.

I tapped on the order history, and right at the top sat an order that had just been delivered. The order had been placed half an hour ago.

Items ordered: One hot coffee and a box of men's disposable cotton underwear.

Order placed by: Leah Suthers.

The delivery phone number was mine because this account was linked to my main number. She had clearly forgotten to switch the recipient information when placing the order.

Moments later, the light turned green, and the cars behind me started honking impatiently.

I stepped on the gas and dialed Leah's number.

It rang a couple of times before she answered.

"Hello, honey? Why are you suddenly calling to check up on me? I was just about to take a shower." Leah sounded perfectly calm, even slipping into her usual, coquettishly affectionate tone.

My knuckles went white around the steering wheel as I tried my best to keep my voice steady.

"I'm not checking up on you. A delivery rider just called me and said the men's underwear ordered for delivery to Starlight Avenue was out of stock and asked if he could substitute it with a different brand. Were you the one who placed the order?"

There was a slight pause on the other end, but just for a second.

Then Leah sighed, sounding slightly exasperated. "Oh, what a fuss over nothing. I thought there was no need to bother you with such a trivial matter. I didn't want you getting the wrong idea."

"What trivial matter?" I asked coldly.

"It's about the new intern in our department, Micah Paltrov. You've met him. Anyway, this afternoon, the pipes in that run-down apartment he's renting burst, and the whole place got flooded. But he wasn't able to reach his landlord because it's Thanksgiving."

Leah's tone was utterly natural, as though she were discussing the most ordinary thing in the world.

"He's just a young guy trying to make a living here on his own. It must have been tough for him, and now he doesn't even have a place to stay in the middle of the night. He called me to ask for leave because he might not be able to come to work tomorrow since he has to deal with the plumbing.

"I figured that, as his direct supervisor, I couldn't just leave him stranded on a holiday. And since neither of us is home, our place is just sitting empty anyway. So I took the liberty of giving him the door code and letting him stay at our place for a couple of nights."

She paused, her voice softening further.

"As for the delivery, he texted me earlier saying all his clothes were soaked and he didn't even have a clean pair of underwear to change into. I was just showing a little concern for one of my subordinates, so I ordered some things to be delivered to him.

"I was worried the delivery might go to the wrong place, so I just selected the default address and forgot that the contact number was yours. Honey, you're not going to get mad at me over something so trivial, are you? If it bothers you, I'll have him move out first thing tomorrow morning."

Her explanation was perfect, and she'd even turned the tables on me. If I lost my temper now, I'd be the one who was petty and unreasonable for making a fuss over nothing and showing no empathy.

I took a deep breath and stared at the dark road ahead. "Oh, I see. It's fine. Helping a colleague who's having a hard time is the right thing to do."

"I always knew you were an understanding person, honey. Anyway, I'm going to go shower now. This awful Brockdale weather has me covered in sweat."

"Okay. Go ahead."

After I hung up, a cold laugh escaped me.

Leah was an extremely cautious and shrewd person. She'd crafted her story perfectly. If I were some naive young fool who didn't know better, I might actually have believed her load of nonsense.

But I knew Leah too well.

She was ruthlessly self-serving. She'd normally insist on splitting even a department dinner down to the last cent. How could someone like her suddenly become so generous as to lend our private home to a newly hired intern? And be thoughtful enough to buy him hot coffee and underwear?

I pushed the car up to 50 mph and sped toward Starlight Avenue Residences.

That was the last time I ever saw Leah.Eventually, I heard what became of her through the gossip circulating among people who knew her.Unable to make a living in this city and with no income and a taste for extravagant spending, she soon found herself hounded by debt collectors over the online loans she'd taken out to buy luxury goods. With nowhere else to turn, she had no choice but to return to her hometown.Apparently, her parents had even dipped into their retirement savings to help cover her debts. Now, she worked at a small factory in a small town, earning just 2,200 dollars a month and drifting through life aimlessly. As for Micah, once the incident spread through the industry, he, too, was unable to find a decent job. Rumor had it that he'd gone off to another city to take whatever odd jobs he could find.As for me, life didn't stop just because one terrible woman was out of it. If anything, it got even better. Two months after I kicked Leah out, a project I led turned

The next day was a workday, but I took the day off. Instead of going to the office, I headed to the mall.I picked out a firmer, more comfortable latex mattress for myself, bought a brand-new bedding set in a dark gray Morandi palette, and got some fir-scented diffusers and minimalist decorations. It was my life, after all. There was no reason to punish myself over a piece of trash. At around 2:00 pm, my phone started vibrating nonstop. It was Leah calling.I declined the call outright and promptly blocked her number. Before long, a message from a former colleague popped up.I used to work in the same industry as Leah, just in a different company. It was a small circle, so we had some mutual acquaintances. My former colleague sent me a shocked reaction sticker. "Damn! What happened between you and Leah? Her company is in absolute chaos today!"I replied calmly, "What kind of chaos?"He sent me a long voice message, his voice brimming with barely contained excitement over the g

At 11:30 pm, the hallway of Starlight Avenue Residences was anything but quiet. The arrival of the police, combined with the commotion earlier, had drawn several neighbors out of their apartments. They poked their heads through their open doors, eager to watch the drama unfold.Leah, wearing that wrinkled white blouse, struggled to drag the large black garbage bag I'd given her out the front door, her head hanging in shame.Micah, meanwhile, walked straight toward the elevator with his backpack slung over his shoulder, his face dark and sullen. He didn't say a word or even spare Leah a glance. As the neighbors whispered and pointed fingers, they stepped into the elevator. Just before the doors closed, Leah shot me one last venomous look.I met her gaze without the slightest concern, then slammed the security door shut with a resounding bang. Finally, I had some peace and quiet.Daxton let out a long sigh of relief and leaned the baseball bat against the corner of the wall. "That

"Geoff, please! I'm begging you. Don't kick me out!"Seeing what was happening, Leah dropped to her knees with a thud and clung desperately to my leg, throwing every last shred of dignity out the window."I really have nowhere else to go! I spent my entire paycheck this month on handbags, and I've maxed out my credit cards. I don't even have enough money to stay at a budget hotel tonight!"She looked up, trying to win me over with the same pitiful, helpless look she'd used on me so many times before."For the sake of the five years we've been together, please let me sleep on the couch just for tonight. I'll move out tomorrow. I promise!"I looked down at the woman before me. For five years, she'd always used this pathetic act to get things out of me. She'd asked me to cover her rent, buy her designer handbags so she could show off, and even pay for her younger brother's car."For the sake of the five years we've been together?" I echoed, letting out a cold laugh. "When you brou

When Micah heard Leah dumping all the blame on him, he let out a cold laugh from the bed. Without the slightest embarrassment, he threw back the covers and leisurely pulled on his T-shirt. There was no fear in his eyes, only a hint of mockery. "Leah, stop trying to pin this on me."Micah stood up and straightened his clothes, his voice hard and cold."You're the one who told me you and your boyfriend had fallen out of love a long time ago and were about to break up! You're the one who messaged me in the middle of the night, saying you felt lonely all by yourself in the apartment and asking me to come over and spend Thanksgiving with you!"He turned to me and shrugged, his tone carrying a hint of defiance and indifference. "Look, man, this really isn't on me. She told me she'd bought this apartment outright and that if I got together with her, I'd be the man of the house someday. I got played, too. I had no idea you'd be back today."I looked at this ambitious young man in his e

The smart lock let out a sharp beep as it unlocked, the sound especially jarring in the dead of night. All the color drained from Leah's face on the video call. With a clatter, her phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. The screen flipped over, turning the image completely black, and the call was abruptly disconnected.I gave her no time to react or even get dressed. Gripping the door handle, I pressed it down hard and shoved the front door open. The living room's main lights were off, and a classic romance film was playing on the enormous projector screen.Half-eaten takeout boxes were scattered messily across the coffee table, along with two wine glasses that still had half a glass of red wine each. The air was thick with a mingled smell of alcohol, perfume, and the musky scent of sex. The smell made my stomach churn.Daxton strode in behind me. With a cold sneer, he immediately raised his phone and started recording.I crossed the living room without slowing down and k
