Chapter 8

Amelia arrived at the park ten minutes early.

It was the same place they’d walked together just days ago, laughing about nothing, stealing glances that meant everything. Now, the bench by the fountain felt colder. Lonelier. The silence around her pressed in like fog.

She wrapped her arms around herself as the breeze whispered through the trees. She didn’t know if she was ready to forgive Ethan — but she needed the truth. All of it.

At exactly noon, he appeared.

He looked tired. Like someone who hadn’t slept in days. His hands were buried in his coat pockets, and his steps were slower than usual — like he was approaching a moment he couldn’t undo.

“Thank you for coming,” he said quietly.

“I needed to,” Amelia replied. “We can’t pretend anymore.”

He nodded and sat beside her, but left a careful space between them.

“Ask me anything,” he said. “I won’t hide from you.”

She swallowed hard. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I was afraid,” he admitted. “Afraid that if I told you the truth, you’d walk away before we even had a chance.”“You should’ve trusted me with that choice,” she said, voice low and laced with hurt.

“I know,” he whispered. “You were never just some distraction, Amelia. You’re the first person I’ve connected with in years. But that doesn’t excuse what I did.”

She turned to him fully. “Why did you and Ryan fall out?”

Ethan’s jaw tensed. “Ryan and I haven’t spoken in over three years. We were never close. His mother and I divorced when he was ten. I wasn't there the way I should have been. I buried myself in work, in guilt, in anything that wasn’t him.”

He paused. “By the time I tried to show up, he had walls I couldn’t get through. He resented me. And I gave him every reason to.”

Amelia’s brows furrowed. “So you’re estranged. But still… you knew who I was.”

“Not at first,” Ethan said. “Not until after our first date. I didn’t recognize you from the few pictures I'd seen. You looked different. Grown. Confident. And then when I realized—”

“You kept going.”

“I told myself I’d stop. But every time I saw you, I didn’t want to let go. It was wrong, but I was already in too deep.”

She looked away, voice breaking. “You let me fall into something blind.”

“I know,” he said again, softly. “But I fell first.”

The silence between them pulsed like a wound. Amelia stood, her arms crossed tightly around her. “You say it was real. But how can I believe that when it was built on something so... twisted?”

Ethan stood, but kept his distance. “Because you weren’t a mistake to me. You were the one thing I didn’t see coming, and the only thing I didn’t want to let go.”

“And yet you still hid.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

Her voice rose, full of emotion. “No, you were protecting yourself.”

The truth stung the air around them.

“I get it,” she said. “Life is messy. Love is messy. But you don’t get to decide when I know the full story. That’s not love. That’s control.”

He swallowed hard, looking pained. “You’re right.”

She exhaled sharply, the wind lifting strands of her hair as she tried to catch her breath. Tried to calm the ache inside her chest.

“I don’t know what I want,” she admitted, eyes glassy. “I feel like everything I thought I knew... just cracked beneath me.”

“I don’t expect forgiveness, Amelia,” he said. “But I’ll wait. As long as it takes.”

Her gaze found his again. There was sadness in his eyes—but also something deeper. Something unspoken. Regret. Maybe even love.

She didn’t know what to call it yet.

But she felt it.

“I need time,” she murmured. He nodded, the faintest flicker of hope on his face. “Then take it.”

She turned and walked away, her steps heavy with confusion and everything left unsaid. Behind her, Ethan didn’t move. He simply watched, hands in his pockets, accepting her retreat with the quiet dignity of someone who knew he’d already said too much—and not enough.

---

That night, Amelia sat in her room with the lights dimmed and silence pressing in on all sides. The glow of her phone screen illuminated her face as she read their last messages.

Each word felt heavier now.

How had things spiraled into this so quickly? And why did she still want him, even after all of it?

She curled up on her bed, staring at the ceiling. For the first time, she let herself ask a question she’d been avoiding:

What if she could forgive him?

What if what they had… was still worth salvaging?

Her phone buzzed unexpectedly. Her heart leapt, thinking it might be him. But it wasn’t. Just a work email.

She sighed and set it aside, then grabbed it again, her fingers hesitating over the keyboard.

Finally, she typed:

*“I’m still angry. Still confused. But I haven’t stopped thinking about you. I don’t know what comes next. But maybe we don’t have to know right now.”*

She hovered for a moment. Then she hit send. Her breath trembled.

For the first time in days, she let herself hope.

Not for perfection. Not even for clarity.

But for something real. Something honest.

She didn’t know if their love could survive the past, or Ryan’s inevitable reaction, or the pain that had already bloomed between them.

But maybe love wasn’t about certainty.

Maybe it was about choosing each other anyway.

Even when it hurt.

Even when it shouldn’t have happened.

Even when it absolutely, undeniably did.

Because some hearts, no matter how complicated the path, still find their way back to the fire they weren’t supposed to touch — but did.

And couldn’t forget.

No calls. The absence was louder than any word. She turned over, pulling the covers tighter, but the warmth didn’t chase away the cold knot twisting in her stomach. • A DATE WITH MY EX-BOYFRIEND DAD   THE CONFRONTATION

Chapter 7Amelia didn’t sleep that night. She lay in bed wide awake, replaying every second she’d shared with Ethan — every kiss, every look, every word — now seen through a cracked lens. She kept asking herself the same question over and over: *Why didn’t he tell me?* The silence gnawed at her, feeding a pit in her stomach that only grew deeper.By morning, the ache in her chest had hardened into something sharper. Determined, she pulled on jeans, tied her hair back, and headed to the café where they first met — the place where it had all begun. If he remembered her favorite things like he claimed, he’d come looking for her there. And she was right. At 10:17 a.m., Ethan walked in, wearing a navy sweater and a look of relief — until he saw her face.He froze. She stood slowly, her heartbeat pounding loud in the quiet café. “We need to talk.”He nodded, jaw tightening. “I figured.”They sat across from each other in silence. No coffee. No smiles.Just truth waiting.“I know,” she said

Chapter 6They sat together in silence, legs touching, handsoccasionally brushing. Outside, the world was waking up, but inside, everything was still.Amelia studied him quietly. There was a softness in his smile, a kind of gentleness that felt rare — but also something guarded in his gaze. Something that hadn’t yet been said.“Ethan,” she began, her voice quiet. “Can I ask you something?”His body stiffened slightly, though his face stayed calm. “Of course.”She hesitated. “That night we met… when you said you don’t talk about your family. Why?”He looked down at his coffee for a long moment before answering. “Because it’s complicated. Painful. And a little messy.”“Messy how?” she pressed gently. He sighed. “There are things I’ve done, people I’ve failed. I’m not proud of all of it.”“You don’t have to be perfect,” she said, touching his hand. “Just honest.”Ethan looked at her, and something flickered behind his eyes. A truth he almost said — but didn’t.Instead, he leaned in and

Chapter 5Amelia didn’t sleep much that night. She lay still, tangled in her sheets, Ethan’s words echoing in her mind. His touch lingered on her skin long after they’d parted. That kiss hadn’t been casual. It had been deliberate. Deep. Like the kind of kiss that doesn’t just spark something — it awakens it.She didn’t want to admit how much she wanted more.By morning, she was restless. Her phone buzzed softly beside her — a message from Ethan.*“I haven’t stopped thinking about you.”*She read it twice. Smiled. But she didn’t reply yet.Instead, she went about her day trying to focus on anything else — laundry, groceries, a short video call with Sarah that didn’t help much since Sarah instantly noticed her distraction.“You’ve got that dreamy, been-kissed-by-a-dangerous-man look,” Sarah teased. “You better spill.”Amelia only laughed. But she didn’t spill. Not yet. That evening, a knock came at her door. She wasn’t expecting anyone, which meant she knew exactly who it was. Ethan sto

  • A DATE WITH MY EX-BOYFRIEND DAD   HELLO PRINCESS

CHAPTER 4Ethan resumed driving. The car engine made a steady sound. Amelia sat quietly, her arms wrapped around herself. Her cheek still felt warm where Ethan had touched her. She hadn’t planned for this. This date was supposed to be a distraction, a reckless attempt to drown out the ache Ryan had left behind. But it had spiraled into something far more intimate—something she never expected, not even with Ryan. Ryan. Her fingers curled into her lap as the weight of his name pressed against her chest. She had loved him, once. Had dreamed of a future where he was the first man to claim every part of her—mind, heart, body. She had promised herself to him, planned to give herself to him on his birthday next month. But that future had shattered the moment he walked away, leaving her with nothing but empty promises and a bruised heart. And now… now she had given a part of herself to someone else. To Ethan. A stranger. Her stomach tightened. She could still feel the ghost of his touc
