ISABELLA 56

I dropped the file on the table and I watched Damien’s father across the table. I looked for how to run away from this man, any lie that could save me from talking to him.

But my head was blank.

“Isabella right?” He smiled through his wrinkled face. He did look like his son when he smiled. He looked somehow saddened by something.

“Yes that’s my name,” I smiled. I looked at the chair, wondering whether I should sit for the chat or stand. It was as if I was standing in front of my boss in my office.

“I just thought I should pass by before I left,” He said.

“Oh right, okay,” I said not having anything to say to him. I was smiling at him like a dumbo, waiting for him to spill whatever he had for me.

“I know you had lunch already but could we have coffee outside and talk about some things, you know?” He said.

I wanted to say no, I was ready to say no but my stupid mouth disappointed me.

“Yes sure,” I said and I almost wanted to slap myself in the middle of the room. I wonder
