Devon:
She stares at me like she wants to murder me, she makes an attempt in blocking the door, preventing me from coming in. “You can’t be here, I didn’t give you permission.” “Do I need permission to see my daughter, Arya?” She flinches only slightly when I say her name with so much coldness, attorney Lee has already told me this could happen, and the best way of approaching it is to be gentle with my words, “Look, I know you don’t want this, but this is our daughter, for us to make it work, we have to co-parent.” “I am not co-parenting with you.” She says the word so boldly, but her voice wavers. “Then, I guess we will meet in court.” I say matter-of-factly, her lips purses as she mumbles something under her breath, she opens the door and gestures for me to come in. Stepping into the cold room, I take a while to look everywhere. There are plush sofas and armchairs around a coffee table, behind the glass wall is the view of the city skyline and a sliding door that probably leads to the balcony. Blankets, papers and toys are scattered all around the chair, this looks like any contemporary family house that involves children And, then I see her, she’s seated on the floor, her back resting on the sofa, fondling with crayons, my breathing stills for a moment that I just stand there, without even moving. “You are not staying long,” Arya’s voice echoes behind me, “Just ten minutes and you can leave, then you can come back next week,” I look at her and she frowns deeply. She’s wearing a lightweight white knit sweater tucked into tailored joggers. I nod slowly, before moving close to my daughter who is on the floor and crouching to her level, granted, I am just seeing her in person for the first time, I have only seen her in photos and she was always smiling, but seeing now, upfront, in pigtails and a light gown, time stops. She looks up at me and light green eyes rake with confusion. I think of the first impression that will come to her face, but she looks at me blankly before returning her gaze to Arya. Ever since I found out about my daughter, I have been thinking of ways to approach Vera gently. Arya smiles slowly, pointing at me. “This is Daddy, and he is happy to see you.” My heart squeezes, never in my entire life have I been expected to be called daddy. “Da-dd-y,” She repeats, looking at me, “Daddy.” She reaches out her tiny arms and I take it, it feels soft and warm, my tension flies away as I hold her arm. “What are you doing?” I ask, staring at the paper. “She has been drawing a lot.” Arya moves behind the couch, “Who knows? She might have a talent for drawing.” “That’s amazing, Vera,” Even saying her name with so much emotion is making my throat get clogged, she’s mine, and I am not letting her go. “Thank you,” She babbles at her words at me warmly, and I feel that tug at my heart again “We are about to have dinner, I think you should go, you can come back tomorrow, but you aren’t allowed to stay longer than thirty minutes.” I stare up at her in disbelief, but she just shrugs. The hate is radiating throughout her body like an electricity charge, the woman in the cruise ship last three years was different, vulnerable, but different. But the same woman stares at me like she wants to murder me. I straighten up, clearing my throat, “Yes, you are right. I should leave,” I hand her the box of chocolate Daphne got from the store, she stares at it hesitantly for a while before taking it from my hands. Walking me towards the door, she lingers there awkwardly as though she’s excited about my leaving. “See you tomorrow evening,” without any more words, she slams the door right in my face. -- The next morning, I sit in my office, signing the contract for the development of our branch in Korea when Daphne walks in; she holds a few folders to her chest. “Good morning sir, I wanted to ask how it went.” She smiles formally, only Daphne knows about Vera, I can’t risk the outside parties knowing about her, but if anybody messes with my daughter, I will crush them whole that only their ashes will be left. “I think I fucked up.” I lean against the chair, pulling my tie. “How, sir?” Daphne always knows what to say: She has been working with me ever since I became the CEO, she is competent and hard-working. “It’s complicated,” I blow out a breath, reliving last night’s memories. Arya didn’t want me to stay longer, it’s there in her eyes, like she was scared of me. I hear a knock on my door and a woman barges in, her light blonde hair is tied into a ponytail, and she’s wearing a faux gown over a trench coat. “Devon!” She says happily, moving over to me. Her heels dance along the marble floor, she gives Daphne a hard glare to leave and she obeys. “Alisha,” I say tiredly, “What are you doing here?” “I am here to see you, silly.” She takes the seat facing me and stretches out her perfectly manicured nails, “I missed you so much.” Alisha, Jasper and I hung out in college- I won’t call it hanging out; we just assisted ourselves in business strategies. “You are married to Jasper, Alisha.” I say coldly, returning to my numerous stacks of papers, they have been dating ever since college and now they are married. She breathes in. “Let’s just go out and eat lunch, please.” “I have a meeting with some people from a design brand in an hour.” I meet her stare. “Another time then.” She grabs her Louis Vuitton bag from the table and stomps out. The phone on my table rings, Barbara’s name flashing on the screen, I turn it off and focus back on the papers. She has caused so much darkness in my life, how can I just pretend like everything's okay?Arya:Anna tricked us, yet again. Damn it, I should have known better than to trust her words, everyone is gathered outside the hall, clutching dearly to their loved ones. Let’s just say that everyone is in a bit of shock. 911 was called earlier by Leto, even though she didn’t want to include the police in everything.Well, anyway. They are here now with the ambulances. Two paramedics burst through the doors, pulling a stretcher, their faces blank with the kind of practiced calm you only see on people who have let their jobs take over their lives. Alisha looks smaller on the stretcher, her gown soaked in dark red. They wheel her towards the ambulance, she’s dead, they already confirmed it ten minutes ago.I watch as Jasper follows, his eyes are rimmed red, even though she never loved him, he loved her ever so passionately. He falls to his knees trying to hold her hand as they roll her away but Daphne holds him up, whispering. “It’s going to be okay.”Devon is by my side, “are you okay
Anna:Theo is fucking everything up.Fuck, fuck, fuck. There he is on the stage, holding the microphone like he owns the world; everyone even has the audacity to keep quiet and listen to what he has to say. This is why I trust myself and myself only, also this is what happens when you put your trust on assholes like Theo Duncan, I should have known he was going to do this, I didn’t even know he was this soft.Nevertheless, whatever he has to say, I don’t care. Everyone dies today, except me. So fuck him. A waiter passes by and I take a glass of champagne from his tray, he doesn’t seem the least bit happy about it but that’s on him, he’s going to be nothing but chunks and bones later today.Alisha and her perfect husband, Jasper are just arriving, they are smiling for the camera. Seriously? Why did they show up? To be honest, when I called Alisha, I wasn’t really expecting her to come considering the fact that she is still mourning her father, but I guess it is what it is.“Can I get e
Alisha:I miss my father, everything I do just reminds me of him, he was always too busy but the little time we had together, we always made it worthwhile, I miss him so much it hurts. Jasper calls it my grieving moment and he thinks I should see a fucking therapist so I can let it all out. I like my emotions stuffed away, thank you very much. The will reading is in two weeks, according to my dad’s attorney, he wants us to settle down before he passes on the inheritance to us. Presently, I am sitting on the couch, staring at the invitation letter that arrived in the mail earlier, for the first time in ever, Devon’s hosting a party tomorrow. The invitation says to come with a plus one and I am pretty sure Jasper is going to be my plus one.My heart is giddy like a teenager. I haven’t seen Devon too much, just having the chance to talk to him and seeing his handsome face will really make my day tomorrow.“Hey.” Jasper comes down from the stairs, his eyes jumping to the invitation letter
Barbara:“What in the hell is this?” I ask my chief advisor as he hands me the envelope with the Brookes crest on it. He stares at me, like I am an idiot or something. “It’s an invitation from your son, Devon Brookes.”“Step-son.” I correct him harshly, why does everyone seem to make this damn mistake? I did not give birth to Devon; he’s my fucking step-son, for goodness’ sake. I snatch the invitation from his hand before pursuing him away from my office. Ever since I got the message from Anna, she wouldn’t ever seem to leave me alone. Anytime my phone rings, I get a hypertensive feeling it’s her. So now, I am acting like a deranged old woman. I don’t leave the mansion anymore, everywhere is equipped with more security equipment and I doubled the agents all around the mansion.I can’t afford taking any chances. When my chief advisor leaves, I pull out the invitation letter from the envelope. It’s an invitation to a ball that’s hosted by my son, step-son, I mean. It’s to announce his
Anna: I feel fulfilled and accomplished, not that kind of fulfilled you get when you land yourself a killer job or you graduate college. It’s the type of fulfilled you get when you kill a multi-billionaire in his own villa and when you frame your best-friend for murder, I am sure the feeling is very rare, as many people hasn’t achieved this kind of fulfilment, but I have and it feels so fucking good. Right now, I am seated on the dining chair, waiting for Theo like the good girlfriend that I am, the table is filled with food ranging from Chinese food to American dishes...You can name it. The door opens and my ear perks. He’s here, my boyfriend is here, like a giddy teenager, I skip to the door hugging him as he enters, Theo looks tired today and I feel for him, well not exactly, the last thing I want him to do is get tired. Who’s going to cover up my petty crimes? “Hey, baby. You look tired, let me take your coat.” I say sweetly, removing the coat from his body, he nods his head w
Devon: Arya’s parents left this morning, they seem really eager to leave and stay at the same time. If you ask me, I’ll say families are weird but they are also the greatest blessing one could ever ask, well except if you don’t count my crazy step-mother. Arya’s family all embraced me and her mother whispered into my ear. “We all love you.” And, to be honest, it felt really good hearing that. Presently, Daphne and I are in the funeral home for multi-billionaire Julian Ford, the media are speculating arson but there is still further investigation going on. I haven’t seen Alisha at all, but I can imagine what she’s going through. I know what it’s like to lose someone you are close to. That grief, I went through it and I don’t want to go through it again which is why I am trying my absolute best not to endanger my family in any way. I have responsibilities now. None of this sits right with any of us; Arya was very surprised when she saw the news. Liam insisted it couldn’t be a coincid
