The light consumed them, wild and endless. Aurora clung to Julian’s hand as the world bent around them, their bodies spinning through color and sound. Her heartbeat was the only thing she could hear, steady against the rush of wind and whispering voices. When the ground finally returned beneath her feet, she stumbled forward, gasping.

They stood on the edge of a valley bathed in gold. The air shimmered with heat, and the horizon pulsed faintly like a living thing. Mountains loomed in the distance, their peaks shaped like the wings of angels or the claws of something older.

Julian steadied her with a hand at her waist. “Are you all right?”

She nodded, though her body trembled. “I’ve been better.”

He brushed a strand of hair from her face. “You look like fire.”

Aurora blinked at him. “What?”

His smile was faint but real. “You’re glowing again.”

She looked down, and he was right—the light under her skin had returned, tracing her veins in gold. “It’s stronger here.”

“Because it’s home,” h

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   Blood of the Same Flame

The night had teeth again. Lightning scratched the sky as on a nail, and made the city a throb of gold and black. Hurrying along the damp streets, Julian increased in speed with each turn, and on his side of the road lies Aurora, pale and silent. The windshield received the griping rain in angry bouts but the strain within the car was stronger than the rain.Neither spoke. The silence between them felt heavy enough to break. Finally, Aurora said quietly, “You knew.”Julian’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. “No.”“You knew,” she repeated, her voice cracking. “You knew Lucas was your brother and you didn’t tell me.”He slammed the brakes at a red light, the car jerking forward before stopping hard. He turned to face her, his jaw clenched, rain dripping down the glass between flashes of lightning. “Because it doesn’t matter.”Aurora’s eyes filled with tears. “It matters to me, Julian! You promised me truth. After everything we’ve been through—after everything I’ve lost—you don’t g

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   Beneath the Skin of Light

Morning came pale and fragile, seeping through the windows like a secret afraid to be found. The rain had stopped, but the city outside still felt drowned, the sky heavy with what it refused to release. Aurora stood by the window, watching the water slide down the glass, her reflection fragmented into a dozen versions of herself—each one carrying a different shade of fear.Behind her, Julian stirred. The room was filled with the scent of rain and skin, of warmth trying to outlive the night’s cold. He sat up slowly, his hair a mess, his eyes shadowed from lack of sleep. Yet even exhausted, he carried that quiet strength that had always made her both safe and restless.“You didn’t close your eyes all night,” he said softly.“I was afraid to.”Julian rose, the sheet falling around his waist. “Afraid of what?”Aurora’s voice trembled. “Of waking up as someone else.”He crossed the room, stopping behind her. His reflection appeared beside hers in the glass—two ghosts staring back. He reste

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Temptation of Fire

The night refused to end. Hours bled together in silver light and restless shadows. Aurora was lying awake in the bed of Julian, and the temp was over, and there was a silence that was humming with unanswered questions. Softly the curtains moved in the sea wind, caressing her bare arm as a lover does his. Silence prevailed in the outside world, but within her chest there was still the light. It pulsed quietly, alive and aware.Julian stirred beside her, his breath steady, his hand resting near her waist. Even in sleep, he looked like he was fighting something. His jaw tightened when he dreamed, and she could see the faint tremor in his fingers, the instinct of a man who had forgotten what peace felt like. She turned to face him, her gaze softening. He was beautiful in the way danger was—sharp, irresistible, something you couldn’t help but get close to even if it burned you. She traced her fingertips down his arm, feeling the scars, the heat of his skin. Every line of him reminded her

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Heart of the Flame

The storm came before dawn. Rain fell in sheets against the city, washing blood and ash into the gutters. Aurora sat by the window, her knees drawn to her chest, watching lightning flash over the dark sea. The faint glow under her skin pulsed in rhythm with the thunder, answering it like a heartbeat.Julian stood behind her, his reflection a shadow in the glass. He hadn’t slept. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw her body flickering with gold light, saw the way she’d collapsed into his arms after Ray had turned to ash. He still smelled the burnt air, still heard her whisper, What if he was right?“Aurora,” he said softly. She turned, her eyes rimmed red. “You didn’t have to stay.”Julian stepped closer. “You really think I’d leave you after everything?”“You should.” Her voice was quiet, cracked. “I’m not what I used to be. I don’t even know if I’m still… me.”He crouched beside her, resting his hand lightly on her shoulder. “You’re still the woman who walked into my life and turne

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Shadow That Waits

The wind carried the smell of ash and salt. The city was quiet, too quiet, as if holding its breath after everything that had happened. Aurora stood on the balcony of the safehouse Julian had brought her to, her hair whipping across her face, her fingers clutching the cold railing. Below, the sea stretched endless and dark, whispering the same words she’d heard in her dreams since the gate had closed. You are not done. She pressed her palm to her chest. The faint glow that once burned there was gone, but she could still feel the warmth underneath her skin. It pulsed sometimes, a reminder that the power hadn’t left—it had only changed.Inside, Julian watched her from the doorway. His body was covered in half-healed scars, his shirt clinging to his frame, but his eyes hadn’t softened. They carried that same storm he’d worn the night she first met him, when danger had been his armor and desire his weapon.“You should rest,” he said.Aurora didn’t move. “Rest isn’t what I need.”He crosse

  • A Deal with the Mafia Lord   The Fire and the Promise

The light swallowed everything. The sky fractured in gold and white, and for a moment Aurora could not tell whether she was standing on earth or sinking into the heart of a star. The creature screamed, its body unraveling in molten threads, each one clawing at her mind, whispering in the voice of every nightmare she’d ever survived.Julian’s hand was the only real thing. His grip burned, steady, alive. He pulled her back every time she drifted too close to the breaking point. Around them the air shuddered, waves curling upward like glass.“Hold on,” he shouted, though his voice was almost lost in the roar. “Don’t let it take you!”Aurora tried to answer, but her throat caught fire. The gold in her veins had turned liquid, running fast and hot. Every beat of her heart sent another surge through her body, until she thought she might burst apart. The creature laughed. “You are mine, little flame. You carried me here. You opened the gate.”Aurora fell to her knees, gasping. The ground ben
