Rebecca's POV

My boyfriend, Carl Hopper, sent a long string of messages in the group chat I shared with him and my best friend, Joanna Kingston.

Those messages were full of blame as he accused me of not telling him about wanting to transfer departments. He said that since I wasn't able to hear anything, transferring into the Music Department would bring nothing but humiliation on myself.

He also complained about my excessive attachment to him. "Isn't it enough that you're my girlfriend? Why do you insist on sticking to me every single day?"

I laughed when I read those messages, bitterly amused that he still called himself my boyfriend when he had time to talk about music with Joanna but not to have a meal with me.

At last, Carl ended his tirade with, "I took your hearing aid away earlier. If you can endure it for a full day, I'll agree to you switching departments."

Instead of answering, I merely left the group chat.

When Carl had pulled the same thing in my previous life, I had gone an entire day without my hearing aid to please him. However, I had ended up getting hit by an electric scooter because of it.

It wasn't until two whole hours had gone by before Carl finally came to see me.

Yet, the first thing out of his mouth had been yet another accusation. "See? You can't even live a normal life without your hearing, and yet you insist on going into music."

Half an hour after I left the group chat, Joanna and Carl finally noticed.

Carl messaged me with a trace of reproach.

"Becca, what's causing your temper tantrum this time? Joanna only told me about you wanting to transfer departments out of concern for you. You really hurt her by leaving the group chat like that. Besides, didn't I already give you a way out without hurting your pride?"

My eyes burned with tears as I read the words. They were clearly in the wrong, yet they wanted me to set aside my pride and submit first.

I didn't bother replying. Despite that, he didn't even try to coax me out of my bad mood.

The next morning, I got a message from Mom saying she had bought me a birthday cake.

When I headed downstairs to accept the delivery, I happened to run into Carl and Joanna.

Carl handed my hearing aid back to me before patting my head. "You sure are stubborn. I only wanted you to realize the difficulty of the situation and back down, so imagine my surprise when you actually managed to hold on for an entire day."

A mix of exasperation and indulgence glinted in his eyes as he added, "Switch departments if you want to. Whatever happens, Joanna and I will have your back in the future."

Hooking her arm through mine, Joanna said with a smile, "Congratulations on getting your wish, Becca. Are you happy?"

In response, I only laughed, not saying a word. I wasn't about to tell them that I had no intention of transferring departments anymore.

Joanna took out her phone and glanced at the time. "Carl, my friend managed to buy the concert tickets for today from a scalper."

The concert was for one of their favorite singers, and they immediately launched into an excited discussion about heading over as soon as classes ended.

I calmly spoke up. "How many tickets did you buy?"

Pursing her lips, Joanna replied, "Becca, I didn't buy yours because it's not right for you to attend a concert, what with you being deaf and all."

Beside her, Carl also added, "Just wait for us in your room, okay? I'll get you a milkshake later when we return."

For a moment, I simply stared at him, disappointment and dejection swirling inside me.

In my previous life, they had gone to the concert and even uploaded a collage of them with their faces pressed together.

Some people had jokingly commented that they were flaunting their love, even while attending a concert.

Carl hadn't responded, though Joanna had replied with an emoji of a smiley face with its tongue stuck out playfully. Neither of them tried to clarify things; their silence was almost a quiet admission.

As for me, despite waiting all night, I hadn't even received a single "happy birthday".

Back in the present, I tugged on Carl's sleeve. "Could you not go to the concert? It's my birthday today."

Carl froze in surprise, as though it had only just occurred to him. A conflicted look appeared in his eyes, but before he could open his mouth and refuse, I released his sleeve with a blank expression.

Staring at me for a few seconds, Carl suddenly said, "Alright, I won't go. I'll spend time with you instead."

However, in the next second, Joanna spoke up, her tone wounded and reproachful.

"But I went to great lengths before I was finally able to get someone to buy the tickets for us! Becca, please, could we delay your birthday celebration just for one day? We can celebrate it together tomorrow, okay?

"All these years, I cared for you so much that I was willing to bend over backward for you. Yet, every time you turned my pain into a joke, you reopened old wounds. After that, there was no future left for us."My voice was calm, like the way a judge would announce their final verdict. In my previous life, I had loved him more than I loved myself, which led me to let him play the same prank on me over and over again. Eventually, one such prank had resulted in my death.Carl couldn't stop his shoulders from trembling as profound regret and misery crashed over him. There was a light in his red-rimmed eyes that I knew meant he was unwilling to accept the situation."Why can't you give me another chance? Becca, we've been together since we were kids. It hasn't been easy getting to where we are today."Indeed, it hadn't been easy.He was completely unaware, but in my previous life, I had loved him in silence. After I lost my hearing, I had stumbled along behind him, desperate not to l

Half a year later, after enduring treatment session after treatment session, I was finally ready to undergo the surgery. The operation was a resounding success, and at long last, I was able to hear the world with my own ears. I no longer had to hear it through the tinny, mechanical sounds of a hearing aid. Now, the sounds reached me clearly, full of vibrant life.Upon returning home from the hospital, Dad insisted on dragging me off to go on a shopping spree to celebrate.Once we were done shopping, he headed to the underground parking to get the car while I waited for him at an outdoor cafe around the corner, a cup of hot latte cradled in my hands. It was early fall now. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves around me, creating a soft, clear susurration unlike the dull sounds I was used to before."Rebecca Jink?"A hesitant voice spoke up from beside me.When I turned my head, I saw that it was Carl's ex-roommate.Taking a seat opposite me, he stirred his coffee as he began to

After ending the phone call with Joanna, Carl checked his Instagram messages with Rebecca.Their last message was him berating her for being unreasonable. At the time, he hadn't noticed, but now that he was reading through their chat again, he discovered she hadn't sent him a message since the day he took her hearing aid away after learning she was transferring departments. In the past, she had always been all too eager to share everything with him. Even the shape of a cloud above her head was enough for her to contact him.Borrowing his roommate's phone, he went to Rebecca's Instagram account. The brilliant splotches of color blooming across the screen stabbed deep into his eyes.Previously, all of her posts had revolved around him, like them sharing a meal or her accompanying him to his vocal practices. Her love for him had shone through every single one of her posts. Now, however, she was clad in a paint-stained apron, paintbrush in hand as she shot a dazzling smile at the cam

The smile on Aubrey's face vanished as she eyed Joanna intently."Becca was right to break up with you. Having a boyfriend with no sense of boundaries is just asking for trouble. "And you! You claim to be Becca's friend, yet you're always hanging around her boyfriend. How utterly shameless! Stay away from my daughter, you wretches."With that, she mercilessly shut the door in their faces.Carl stumbled back a step, while Joanna burst into loud sobs as though she had suffered a great humiliation."How could Mrs. Jink misunderstand me like that? You and I just share the same interests! They don't know anything! If I had wanted to be with you, we would've gotten together long before this! Rebecca wouldn't even be in the picture!"Carl was silent. In the past, plenty of people had teased him about his relationship with Joanna, but he had merely treated those comments like a joke. He hadn't bothered explaining, nor had he cleared things up.Thinking back on it now, he had actually s

Carl was absolutely floored. How was it that he hadn't known anything about Rebecca wanting to take a leave of absence from school?Hastily pulling out his phone, he called her, yet not a single call went through. Belatedly, he realized that he had been blocked. He stood in the corridor of the administrative building with the hot sun blazing down on him, yet all he felt was an overwhelming coldness spreading through his body. Was Rebecca upset at him? Did she blame him for forcing her to go diving and causing her to injure her ears? Or could it be that she blamed him for always taking her hearing aid away from her?At that moment, Joanna skipped over and patted Carl on the shoulder."What are you doing, staring off into space right here?"Carl turned to her and replied in a dazed tone, "Becca blocked my number. Are you able to get in contact with her?" Joanna's eyes flashed briefly at the words. She'd realized the same during the summer holidays, when she stopped being able to

Several days later, it was the summer holidays. My family and Carl's had agreed to spend some time together at the beach. However, when we arrived at the airport, I saw Joanna waiting for us with her luggage. Once we got to the beach, Joanna insisted we go diving.I immediately refused, "I don't want to go diving since it'll be uncomfortable for my ears."In response, Joanna clung to my arm and whined, "Come onnnn, Becca. We're already here, so it would be a waste not to go."Then she leaned closer and whispered in my ear, "Carl told me that he wants to apologize to you and has a surprise waiting for you down there."Carl came over then and took my hand. "Becca, just think of it as spending time with me, okay?"With that, the two didn't give me the chance to refuse a second time, grabbing one arm each and dragging me over to the diving site. The icy seawater shocked my nerves. At first, Carl and the diving instructor kept close to me, one on each side as they led me down.O
