Chapter 2

Author: Morning Fish
Carl clearly thought this was a great idea, for his eyes lit up.

"It's settled, then. Becca, we'll make it up to you and celebrate your birthday tomorrow."

He made the decision for me before I could speak up, not even asking if I consented to the plan.

Taking in the relieved look on his face, I suddenly found this entire situation rather ridiculous.

My birthday and Joanna's were only one day apart, so we had been celebrating together for the past few years. However, every time, my birthday celebration was delayed by a day so we could celebrate on the same day as Joanna's. It was as though I had lost the right to have my own birthday.

Nonetheless, Carl didn't notice my dark mood at all, turning to head off to class with Joanna.

That night, the same collage and joking comments appeared, just like in my previous life.

However, this time, I didn't keep quiet. Instead, I commented below the collage as well, "They do seem to be a perfect match for each other."

Within moments, Carl was calling me.

"Rebecca Jink, what nonsense are you blathering in the comments section below Joanna's post? Hurry up and delete it!"

I answered calmly, "Everyone is commenting about how you two are flaunting your love. I was just hopping on the bandwagon."

Carl's tone turned cold as he scolded me for being unreasonable. "Joanna only uploaded that on her social media because she wanted to document a part of her daily life. It's not her fault that others misunderstood the post. If she were to try and explain, it would only make her look petty."

A burst of mocking laughter left my lips. Even when I was furious and jealous, he still cared more about Joanna's reputation than me.

"If she knows that others will misunderstand, just don't upload such misleading photos."

Carl had no response to that.

I hung up.

A short while later, Joanna had deleted the post. For the rest of the night, she was quiet, not uploading anything more.

…

The next day, I finished packing my bag after class was over, only to spot Joanna and Carl waiting for me outside the door.

Joanna lunged forward to pull me into a hug, an apologetic expression on her face. "Becca, were you angry last night? I'm sorry. I was just too excited and let it get the better of me. Let's celebrate your birthday later so that I can make it up to you, okay?"

Extricating myself from her embrace, I said, "My birthday is already over, and I have no intention of celebrating it belatedly."

The smile on her face slowly vanished, replaced by a hint of dejection.

Immediately, Carl's expression darkened.

"Becca, could you stop being such a wet towel? Because of your temper tantrum last night, Joanna wasn't even in the mood for the concert anymore. She's been racking her brains the whole day for ideas on how to cheer you up."

A wave of bitterness surged through me. Every time I refused to go along with their wishes, they would call me a party-pooper or a wet towel.

In the end, I was still dragged away by Joanna.

However, I didn't know until we had arrived at the restaurant that we were having spicy food.

Even though I couldn't handle spicy food, Carl still ordered for the dishes to be extra spicy.

"Why are we having spicy food?"

Carl answered in a matter-of-fact tone, "Because Joanna and I love spicy food. Stop being so special. Besides, today is her birthday. Can't you just give in to her wants?"

Joanna piped up beside him, "Spicy food is like the soul of life. There's no life without spice."

They had clearly promised to make it up to me and belatedly celebrate my birthday, and they could have easily ordered me some non-spicy food as well.

Just the smell of the spices floating in the air had my stomach twisting in pain.

Once, I had forced myself to eat spicy food just to go along with them. However, I ended up having such terrible gastric pain that I had to go to the emergency room in the middle of the night.

Upon learning of it, not only did Caleb not show any concern toward me, but he even scorned me for having such a weak body.

"With you being so delicate, how are Joanna and I supposed to bring you along the next time we want to do something?"

Back in the present, I spoke up. "I don't want to have any spicy food."

My rare display of opinion caused Carl to pause momentarily, but ultimately, he still said, "We've already placed the order. If you really can't handle it, we'll just ask the restaurant for some water later, and you can wash your food in it."

A burning sensation pricked at my eyes, and I couldn't help but wonder just how blind I must have been in the past to not realize that my boyfriend had never once sided with me.

"Carl, let's break up."

"All these years, I cared for you so much that I was willing to bend over backward for you. Yet, every time you turned my pain into a joke, you reopened old wounds. After that, there was no future left for us."My voice was calm, like the way a judge would announce their final verdict. In my previous life, I had loved him more than I loved myself, which led me to let him play the same prank on me over and over again. Eventually, one such prank had resulted in my death.Carl couldn't stop his shoulders from trembling as profound regret and misery crashed over him. There was a light in his red-rimmed eyes that I knew meant he was unwilling to accept the situation."Why can't you give me another chance? Becca, we've been together since we were kids. It hasn't been easy getting to where we are today."Indeed, it hadn't been easy.He was completely unaware, but in my previous life, I had loved him in silence. After I lost my hearing, I had stumbled along behind him, desperate not to l

Half a year later, after enduring treatment session after treatment session, I was finally ready to undergo the surgery. The operation was a resounding success, and at long last, I was able to hear the world with my own ears. I no longer had to hear it through the tinny, mechanical sounds of a hearing aid. Now, the sounds reached me clearly, full of vibrant life.Upon returning home from the hospital, Dad insisted on dragging me off to go on a shopping spree to celebrate.Once we were done shopping, he headed to the underground parking to get the car while I waited for him at an outdoor cafe around the corner, a cup of hot latte cradled in my hands. It was early fall now. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves around me, creating a soft, clear susurration unlike the dull sounds I was used to before."Rebecca Jink?"A hesitant voice spoke up from beside me.When I turned my head, I saw that it was Carl's ex-roommate.Taking a seat opposite me, he stirred his coffee as he began to

After ending the phone call with Joanna, Carl checked his Instagram messages with Rebecca.Their last message was him berating her for being unreasonable. At the time, he hadn't noticed, but now that he was reading through their chat again, he discovered she hadn't sent him a message since the day he took her hearing aid away after learning she was transferring departments. In the past, she had always been all too eager to share everything with him. Even the shape of a cloud above her head was enough for her to contact him.Borrowing his roommate's phone, he went to Rebecca's Instagram account. The brilliant splotches of color blooming across the screen stabbed deep into his eyes.Previously, all of her posts had revolved around him, like them sharing a meal or her accompanying him to his vocal practices. Her love for him had shone through every single one of her posts. Now, however, she was clad in a paint-stained apron, paintbrush in hand as she shot a dazzling smile at the cam

The smile on Aubrey's face vanished as she eyed Joanna intently."Becca was right to break up with you. Having a boyfriend with no sense of boundaries is just asking for trouble. "And you! You claim to be Becca's friend, yet you're always hanging around her boyfriend. How utterly shameless! Stay away from my daughter, you wretches."With that, she mercilessly shut the door in their faces.Carl stumbled back a step, while Joanna burst into loud sobs as though she had suffered a great humiliation."How could Mrs. Jink misunderstand me like that? You and I just share the same interests! They don't know anything! If I had wanted to be with you, we would've gotten together long before this! Rebecca wouldn't even be in the picture!"Carl was silent. In the past, plenty of people had teased him about his relationship with Joanna, but he had merely treated those comments like a joke. He hadn't bothered explaining, nor had he cleared things up.Thinking back on it now, he had actually s

Carl was absolutely floored. How was it that he hadn't known anything about Rebecca wanting to take a leave of absence from school?Hastily pulling out his phone, he called her, yet not a single call went through. Belatedly, he realized that he had been blocked. He stood in the corridor of the administrative building with the hot sun blazing down on him, yet all he felt was an overwhelming coldness spreading through his body. Was Rebecca upset at him? Did she blame him for forcing her to go diving and causing her to injure her ears? Or could it be that she blamed him for always taking her hearing aid away from her?At that moment, Joanna skipped over and patted Carl on the shoulder."What are you doing, staring off into space right here?"Carl turned to her and replied in a dazed tone, "Becca blocked my number. Are you able to get in contact with her?" Joanna's eyes flashed briefly at the words. She'd realized the same during the summer holidays, when she stopped being able to

Several days later, it was the summer holidays. My family and Carl's had agreed to spend some time together at the beach. However, when we arrived at the airport, I saw Joanna waiting for us with her luggage. Once we got to the beach, Joanna insisted we go diving.I immediately refused, "I don't want to go diving since it'll be uncomfortable for my ears."In response, Joanna clung to my arm and whined, "Come onnnn, Becca. We're already here, so it would be a waste not to go."Then she leaned closer and whispered in my ear, "Carl told me that he wants to apologize to you and has a surprise waiting for you down there."Carl came over then and took my hand. "Becca, just think of it as spending time with me, okay?"With that, the two didn't give me the chance to refuse a second time, grabbing one arm each and dragging me over to the diving site. The icy seawater shocked my nerves. At first, Carl and the diving instructor kept close to me, one on each side as they led me down.O
