Chapter 3

Author: Rachelle
"Don't be nervous. Just think of it as working from home. The people in the executive assistant office are easy to get along with."

The phrase working from home gave me another quiet wave of satisfaction. That lasted right until a three hundred page document hit my inbox.

I wanted to cry. All around me, my new coworkers were frantically tapping away at their keyboards. My desk was separated from Liam's office by at least five people.

Forget cultivating the sparks of love. There are no sparks to be found.

I gritted my teeth. Time to embrace the grind. I resolutely threw myself into the life of a corporate slave.

By lunch, I was already walking arm in arm to the cafeteria with my new work friends. A gay bestie on my left, a sophisticated corporate sister on my right. The executive assistants had great looks.

Catching Liam's unreadable gaze through the blinds, I excitedly blinked at him to signal I was adapting perfectly to my new environment.

Maybe it was just the glare on the glass, but Liam's expression seemed to darken as the elevator doors slowly slid shut.

---

The cafeteria was packed for lunch. The three of us finally managed to snag a table when a sudden wave of hushed chatter approached the entrance.

"Why is the CEO eating down here?"

Following Jon Davis's gaze, I craned my neck. Liam was smiling and nodding at passing employees, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms to expose a hint of lean muscle.

"It's employee appreciation month, so eating at the cafeteria counts as an employee benefit." Anna Brown dropped a drumstick onto my plate. I buried my head in my food, pretending I didn't know Liam at all.

Our eyes met for a split second, and I looked away immediately.

"Our CEO is seriously handsome. He has that whole bossy vibe down, right?"

Jon leaned in close, whispering and winking at me.

I gasped in shock. "You like that type? But he isn't gay, isn't he?"

"Our boss Liam settled down rather early. He's already been married for three years." Anna was part of the original staff, so she knew practically everything about the company.

I was just about to dive deeper into the gossip when Liam approached our table, holding a food tray.

"Is anyone sitting here?" Standing at the edge of the table under the midday sun, his eyes looked like clear springs.

The three of us scrambled to tell him it was empty, and Liam took a seat right across from me.

The air froze into a suffocating silence. Right before I could die of absolute embarrassment, Liam spoke up to break the awkward atmosphere.

"Are you satisfied with the cafeteria food lately? Is there anything that needs improvement?"

"The food has always been good, and the employee benefits are great." Jon plastered a massive smile across his face. It was so cringe it gave me goosebumps.

"Hello, Mr. Reed! Even though it's only my first day, the company's warmth had me feeling right at home," I chirped.

What a pair of absolute brown-nosers we were.

Liam's expression instantly shifted from sunny to overcast, making me suspect that our flattery had completely backfired.

"Good. Keep up the hard work." The words sounded like they were dragged out from between his teeth. He turned and walked away, leaving the three of us staring at each other in total confusion.

"Isn't he going to eat?"

"Guess he wasn't hungry," I replied.

"Nina, did you know our boss from before?" Facing Anna's worried gaze, I could only manage a stiff laugh to play it off.

"Nope, never. Maybe he's just having a bad day."

---

Anna seemed worried that I was feeling pressured, so she comforted me all the way back to my desk.

What a touching display of corporate camaraderie. It made my conscience twinge with guilt for hiding my relationship with Liam.

Fueled by that remorse, I voluntarily took on all kinds of grunt work. Before I knew it, the work day came to an end. My phone buzzed.

It was a text from Liam.

[Shall we head home together after work?]

I stretched my back, looked at the pile of remaining paperwork, and decided to reject him.

[I am not the kind of boss who exploits an employee on their very first day.]

[Us corporate slaves will find our own grind.]

Liam stopped replying, so I threw myself back into my work.

By the time I finally sorted the last document, I dragged my exhausted body toward the subway entrance.

The moment I stepped out of the front gates, a black Maybach nearby rolled down its window.

Liam walked over to me, took my bag, and opened the passenger door.

"Good job today."

"Have you been waiting for me this whole time?" It had been three hours since the end of the official work hours.

"Yeah. It's your first day on the job, so I wanted to go home together." The car interior was warm and cozy, illuminated by the faint amber glow of the streetlights.

The atmosphere inside the car instantly turned thick with understated tension.

I curled up in the passenger seat. Liam's fingertips brushed against the steering wheel with casual precision.

The scent of his cologne mingled with the warm blast of the AC had the tips of my ears turning red.

"Did you pretend not to know me because you're afraid your coworkers will find out about our relationship?" Liam asked suddenly, his voice as flat as if we were discussing contract clauses.

"Of course!" I gripped my seatbelt, doubling down with righteous conviction. "What kind of nepo baby blows their own cover on day one? It's called workplace survival strategy."

Liam let out a soft chuckle. "Yet you seemed pretty bold when you were bragging to Jon about how handsome I am."

My entire body went rigid.

He had actually overheard our comment from lunch!

The car came to a stop at a red light, and Liam suddenly leaned in close to me.

"So, are you into that type?"

My back pressed hard against the seat, my throat tightening. "What type?"

"The bossy type. Do you like it?" His eyelashes were practically brushing against the tip of my nose. "The photo of the sexy lingerie. That pair of men's pajamas in the corner belonged to me. I left them in the guest room last month."

"I suggest you sell off whatever you can as fast as possible. Otherwise, by the time bankruptcy liquidation hits, you won't even have enough left for retirement."The door shut with a heavy slam, cutting off Harold's remaining shouts of ungrateful brat and monster.A brief silence fell over the room. I had heard rumors before about Liam's mother. They said she had contracted some mysterious illness, eventually wasting away until she was nothing but skin and bones when she passed.Brandon had probably used the exact same methods on Harold.Just like the illness Liam's mother suffered from that could never be cured or diagnosed, Brandon's mother had tampered with the hospital medical reports back then alongside Harold to completely clear away the obstacle. It wasn't that Harold didn't know. He simply turned a blind eye to it because of the leverage Brandon's mother brought to the table.Decades later, the exact same tactic played out on Harold."Shall we visit Brandon in the hospi

"Whatever it is can wait until we get back. I'm exhausted, don't bother me," I said, leaning back to close my eyes, only to get shaken awake."Can a confession wait too?" Liam asked."A confession is at the absolute bottom of the priority list,""Then let's talk about how you want to get revenge on Brandon instead.""Can we get him fixed?" I asked, thinking about Brandon's endless string of sex scandals."Castration might not be an option, but with his crimes, a ten-year prison sentence is a guarantee.""Will your dad actually allow that?" Harold was clearly biased. Brandon was completely useless, yet Harold still bent over backward to provide for him.Liam remained noncommittal. "Starting tomorrow, you're moving into the master bedroom."I sat straight up with a jolt. "Why should I?""The guest room camera has been removed, and the master bedroom has an independent alarm system.""What else is Brandon trying to do?" I raised my voice, a cold sweat breaking across my palms.

"Nina has been busy handling the eastern district project lately, she can't step away," Liam said, his face completely expressionless."Is the project more important, or is your own wedding more important?" Brandon suddenly lunged forward, shoving his phone screen practically against my nose. "Or maybe... you two simply don't dare to throw one?"The trending page suddenly refreshed, and a brand new headline shot straight to the top: [Proof of Mrs. Reed's Infidelity Revealed]"You even went out of your way to buy out the original sources, Brandon," Liam said, letting out a soft chuckle. "Why don't you just come out and say you want the minimum bid for the eastern district project?"Harold slammed his cane heavily against the floor. "Brandon, that's enough.""He's the one who needs to stop!" Brandon suddenly flipped the coffee table, sending porcelain shards flying everywhere. "A bastard trying to steal the family fortune and a nobody pretending to be a high-society princess. Th

"Where are we going?""To get the rings. Since we already said we're getting married—""Is this really the time to be acting?" My voice practically cracked. "Your brother has proof that we're living separately!"Liam slammed on the brakes, sending me flying right into his chest."The security footage in the guest room automatically overwrites every seven days. I just renewed the cloud storage subscription last week. The evidence is entirely in our hands."I froze in my seat. For three years, that guest room had stayed as spotless as a showroom house. It turned out he had a camera in there the whole time?"Are you a pervert?"I struggled to sit back up, but he pinned me back into the leather seat. His warm lips brushed past my earlobe, sending a sudden shiver through my body. "Then what about you sneakily wearing my pajamas? Doesn't that make you a pervert too?"My phone vibrated again. A text from Brandon popped up on the screen: [Father wants you back here. Right now.]"Perf

"No wonder you haven't brought her to see me after being married for so long. She's much easier on the eyes than the previous ones."Seeing that no one was going to back him up, Brandon's anger instantly flared."Benefit the Reeds? You're just a wench from God knows where. You think you're actually part of this family?""Shut up! Now that he's back, let's just eat. What are you picking a fight for?"Liam grabbed my wrist and led me briskly toward the dining room. Behind us, Harold grumbled in deep disappointment."Utterly useless! Such an embarrassment to the family."Brandon slammed the door on his way out, causing the chandelier to shake. I stared down at my plate, my fork and knife trembling slightly between my fingers."Why aren't you eating?" Liam suddenly placed a piece of foie gras with cherry sauce onto my plate. His tone was so natural it felt as if the tense confrontation from a moment ago had never happened. "It's your favorite."How did he know my taste?"The house

My phone suddenly vibrated frantically as a series of texts from Mia popped up on the screen."Holy crap! Liam's assistant just contacted me. They want to track the IP address of your throwaway account! I managed to deflect it for you, but your husband is actually pissed!"I scrambled to lock my screen, but Liam caught my wrist in a tight grip.He glanced across the screen, a dark undercurrent swirling in his eyes. "So it was a calculated prank all along?""I just wanted to know if you actually cared!" The words burst out of me in sheer desperation, but a second later, he pinched my chin."It's my fault for making you feel insecure all this time." His fingertips brushed across my lips. "Do you know now? How much I care."---The air inside the car practically froze solid.Mia's texts had acted like a bomb, blowing our hard-earned romantic tension completely to pieces."I—" Just as I opened my mouth to explain myself, his phone rang.Catching sight of the name "Brandon Reed" o
