Chapter 2

작가: Island
After Andrew left, I tossed the pair of earrings he gave me into the trash.

Just then, a card slipped out of the gift box. It read, "Lucy, no one suits this sapphire necklace other than you. You're literally the Moon Goddess."

Necklace?

As realization dawned on me, I immediately went to Lucy's social media profile.

Her latest post was a picture of a sapphire necklace with the caption, "A gift from him. Thanks! A pair of earrings was also given to me for free, but it was horrendous, so I didn't take it."

So it turned out that it was just a free gift.

My gaze landed on the pair of earrings in the trash.

I couldn't believe that Andrew actually gave me such a perfunctory gift. He didn't even bother switching out the gift card!

Just as I shut my eyes, my phone suddenly buzzed.

It was an email from Lupin Airlines, informing me that my flight to Wolfen Kingdom in a week had been successfully booked.

I knew it was time to end things once and for all.

I had recently been busy packing, handling my resignation, and saying goodbye to my closest friends. Yet, I still had to find time to check Andrew's messages.

He was always busy with work, so he didn't contact me often. But he kept up the habit of sending daily updates about what he was doing, how much he missed me, the scenery he saw, and the annoying coworkers he had to deal with.

Even while pursuing Lucy, he never stopped texting me.

"Just had dinner with Lucy at Lunadow, but I couldn't stop thinking about how you once played 'Lune Sonata' for me here.

"I bought her your favorite dessert, but she didn't seem to like it.

"I saw her, but I wasn't as nervous as I thought I'd be."

His messages came one after another, but I didn't reply to a single one. I was too busy for that. I had way too much luggage that I had to arrange for inter-pack shipping.

After paying the shipping fees, I finally had time to check his messages.

"Why aren't you replying?

"I'm home. Where are you?

"Why are some of your things missing? Why did the airline send you a letter? The hospital said you didn't show up for work today!"

One message after another popped up nonstop, and I could practically picture Andrew growing more and more frantic.

I'd arranged for the rest of my luggage to be shipped, but my carry-on suitcase was still at home.

As much as I didn't want to see him again, I had to go back for it.

I rang the doorbell. To my surprise, it was Lucy who answered.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

I thought Andrew might've at least waited a little out of respect, but the moment I moved out, it seemed that he couldn't wait to bring her in.

Wearing pajamas and acting like the lady of the house, Lucy replied smugly, "Andrew invited me to move in, of course! Your bed's super comfy, by the way. But I didn't like those herbs you planted, so he tore them all out."

Those herbs were incredibly rare. Barely anyone in the entire pack could cultivate them.

Since I couldn't take them with me, I left them for Andrew, thinking he'd appreciate them. But just to please Lucy, he'd ripped them all out.

I tried to maintain my composure as I said, "I'm just here for my suitcase."

Only then did Lucy step aside to let me in, trailing behind me and warning, "Andrew has always loved me. You were nothing but a distraction for him. Now that I'm back, you'd better know your place and stay far away."

I grabbed my suitcase and headed out, but then ran into Andrew in the kitchen. He was putting away the groceries in the fridge.

A steak was sizzling in the pan, and Andrew stood in front of it, wearing an apron.

That was exactly when I understood the difference between being loved and not being loved.

In the past five years of us being together, he'd never once cooked for me.

He gave me a diffident look and sputtered, "I'm sorry… Lucy and I were talking about the past last night, and she got drunk. That's the only reason I brought her back. Nothing happened between us…"

I smiled before saying, "No need to explain. I said I'd give you time."

But as soon as he saw my suitcase, he panicked. "Where are you going?"

"I'm moving out to make space for you and Lucy," I replied.

Just as I walked past him, he suddenly grabbed my hand, refusing to let me leave.

"Sorry! This is all because of me." Lucy hurried out, tears streaming down her face. "It's all my fault. I'll leave."

In the next instant, Andrew released me and held her hand without hesitation.

I looked at him and watched him wipe the tears gently off her face as he crooned, "Don't cry, sweetheart. You don't have to leave. This is my place, after all. Stay as long as you like!"

Nothing stirred within me. At that point, my feelings for him had all died.

Just like that, Andrew became my neighbor for six months. He'd greet us passionately every single day, showering our doorstep with gifts. But my parents and I never acknowledged him and simply let the homeless people take the gifts away. Even when he found out that I was pregnant with someone else's pup, he seemed like he'd found a breakthrough. He said, "Evie, the pup needs a father. Let me take care of it with you, okay?"I didn't expect him to become this servile. Nevertheless, I didn't need his help. I was capable of raising the pup on my own. "Andrew, go back. Both Lucy and your pup are waiting for you," I urged. "I hope you can move on. Let's just put our past behind, okay?"I rarely spoke to him in such a gentle tone, but his eyes reddened as he rasped, "Evie, I can't leave. I'd go mad if I couldn't see you. Please let me stay… even if it means I can't get close to you."Eventually, Andrew got tired. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't seem to please me or my fam

I rejected Andrew coldly, saying, "My parents are at home. If they saw you, they'd probably snap your neck in half first. Just say whatever you want here."He looked at me, then his eyes reddened. "Evie, I really missed you," he choked, his voice quivering. "Haven't you missed me?"Completely unfazed, I met his gaze and said, "Your actions have been nothing but a nuisance. I hope you'll stop bothering me from now on."I was just about to close the door when he suddenly collapsed to the ground on his knees. Passing the bouquet to me, he cried, "Evie, I'm sorry! Please forgive me, okay? I've long been in love with you, yet I've failed to realize it. "I kept thinking about you during my bonding ceremony with Lucy that day… I thought I must've gone mad."But now, I'm 100% certain that you're the one I truly love. I only ever saw Lucy as a sister…"His only true love? How repulsive!"Andrew, would you impregnate your sister?"Panicking, he sputtered, "That's not true! I was drunk

Two years later, Andrew was still obsessed with finding me, and I was just as engrossed with my research. At one point, Selena finally couldn't take it anymore and forced me to accompany her to hunting festivals on weekends. I tried meeting other werewolves, but not once did things ever work out. Relationships were always more or less the same, and I grew tired before anything actually happened. But an accident happened. One night, an unfamiliar werewolf barged into my tent. He seemed to be affected by a certain aphrodisiac herb, and eventually, I was swayed by his pheromones, and we ended up having a one-night stand. Then I realized I had become pregnant with a pup. This wasn't exactly a burden to me. After all, I could completely afford raising a pup on my own. During the past two years, things between my parents and me had improved. The moment they found out I was pregnant, they immediately flew to Wolfen Kingdom. They first chastised me for being careless, then bega

Of course, I wasn't inside our home. The moment Andrew saw Lucy, he froze. "What are you still doing here? I said we were over! I've already rented a new place for you. Get out of our home now!"She was still dressed in the wedding dress. "This is my home," she said, sounding entitled. "You begged me to be your mate, and I agreed. You can't just abandon me."Andrew's chest tightened. But now that he'd realized his own feelings, he couldn't give her any more hope. "Lucy, I pity you for losing your parents. I still care about you, but there's a limit to my patience. You'd better leave while I'm still being nice. Otherwise, don't blame me for being harsh on you."Lucy began crying again, but this time, he didn't give in. He just watched her cry. Until her sobs eventually ceased, he said coldly, "Take off the wedding dress. That was the one I had custom-made for Evie."It was the first time Lucy had seen Andrew look so serious. She didn't dare defy him, since he was the only

Andrew stilled, as if he couldn't fathom Johan's words. A heavy silence hung over the ceremony. Having lost his composure, Andrew looked terrified—one might think that a neighboring pack had attacked them. He grabbed Johan by the collar and snarled, "Say that again!"Enraged, Johan shoved him away and hissed, "I said, Evie has already left our pack! She's no longer part of it. I called you back then, but you said you weren't concerned about a wicked woman like her!"She's been with you for five years. What exactly did she do to deserve this? You actually have the audacity to change your mate right before the ceremony!"A useless woman like Lucy is nothing compared to Evie!"The guests began whispering. Given how sacred the bonding ceremony was, Andrew's sudden change of mate had already upset many of them. "Evie's the top healer of our pack! Over the years, she's done so much for us. There's no way she's inferior to a Beta like Andrew.""In fact, I only voted for him as Be

But just as I was about to leave, Andrew stopped me. Pain flashed across his face. After all, we'd been together for five years, and he couldn't bear to let me leave. "Evie, can't you stay?" he asked.I withdrew my hand. "You said you wanted to pursue Lucy again, so it's inappropriate for me to stay here."He suddenly threw his arms around me. "Evie, just give me a bit more time. I'll make up my mind very soon. Trust me… I really love you."Well, I did trust him, but I no longer felt like waiting for his answer.I was about to push him away when he sighed. "Before you leave, can we at least have dinner together? In the past five years, you were always the one preparing our meals. I've never cooked for you."I knew that he still felt guilty toward me. If having dinner together meant that he could let me go, I was willing to oblige.During dinner, Andrew tried to convince me to stay. "Evie, don't be so petty, okay? Our house is huge. What's the big deal about letting Lucy s
