Willow

The ticking of the wall clock was the only sound I truly heard in the classroom.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock.

Every second pounded in my ears like a dull hammer. Five minutes remained until the final bell. Around me, everyone shifted in their seats, whispered, and made plans for weekend parties. I just stared at the scratches on the floor and tried to breathe evenly.

Every breath hurt.

My ribs on the left side throbbed from the kick I had taken last night. Without thinking, I pulled my oversized gray knitted sweater tighter around myself. It was two sizes too big and the fabric was rough against my skin, but it was my shield. It covered the purple bruises on my arms, the small cuts on my shoulder, and most importantly, it hid me.

Being invisible was my only means of survival.

The teacher’s voice was nothing more than a distant hum. My mind was somewhere else entirely.

I was calculating. Planning.

If I left through the back door as soon as the bell rang, I could avoid the crowds in the hallway. If I walked fast, I could be home in fifteen minutes.

Home.

What a ridiculous word for the dark hole I lived in.

My stomach twisted as I thought about what might be waiting for me behind that door.

Was Victor already home?

Had he been drinking?

If I was lucky, he would be snoring on the couch, passed out drunk after last night’s shift. Then I could quietly slip into my room and lock the door behind me. I could sit there in the darkness without making a sound until morning.

But if he was awake…

If he was awake and in a bad mood, I would not get away that easily.

Yesterday, he beat me because I had closed the refrigerator door too loudly.

Last week, it was because the store had run out of the kind of beer he liked.

I never knew what would set him off.

I only knew his rage.

And his heavy, bony fists.

Ever since my mother died giving birth to my little sister, Victor’s soul had completely rotted away. Grief and alcohol had turned him into a real monster.

And I was his punching bag.

The sharp sound of the bell cut through the air.

Everyone jumped to their feet. Chairs scraped against the floor and books were shoved into bags. I moved slowly. I did not want to draw attention to myself. I waited until loudmouthed Chloe and her friends had left, then quietly pulled my worn backpack onto my shoulders.

As I stepped through the school gates into the cold autumn air, I closed my eyes for a moment.

Just one more day, I told myself.

Just survive today.

I hurried down the street with my eyes fixed on the toes of my shoes. I did not look up when a loud black sports car sped past me. I did not care about the lives of the rich, popular students at school.

There was only one person I cared about.

Ellie.

My little sister’s face appeared in my mind, and my heart beat a little faster.

She was four years old, a little angel with curly blond hair. She was staying with Aunt Sarah, safe and far away from Victor.

But it could not last forever.

Aunt Sarah could barely afford her own bills, and legally, Victor could demand Ellie back at any moment, if only to use her to torment me.

That was why I needed the money.

That was why I endured the beatings, the hunger, and the fear.

Every dollar I hid away from my afternoon dishwashing job was another step toward our freedom. I almost had enough for a tiny apartment.

I just had to hold on a little longer.

When I turned onto our street, my steps slowed.

Our house stood at the very end of the row. Paint peeled from the walls, and the yard was overgrown with weeds and littered with empty beer cans.

The knot in my stomach turned into a cold, hard stone.

Carefully, I stepped onto the wooden porch.

I avoided the third step because it always creaked loudly.

My hand trembled as I slipped the key into the lock. Slowly, millimeter by millimeter, I turned it.

The lock clicked softly.

I opened the door.

The suffocating smell of stale beer, cheap cigarettes, and an unwashed body hit me immediately.

The hallway was dark.

I held my breath and listened.

Nothing.

Only the sound of a dripping faucet coming from the kitchen.

Please, God. Let him be asleep.

I moved toward my bedroom on tiptoe. The floorboards felt cold through the thin soles of my shoes. I moved like a ghost.

Silent.

Barely breathing.

I was almost at my bedroom door.

My hand was already wrapped around the cold metal handle.

I could almost taste safety.

I thought I had made it.

I thought I had escaped him today.

“Where the hell have you been?”

The rough, deep voice sliced through the silence from the darkness of the living room.

The blood froze in my veins.

He was not asleep.

Heavy footsteps pounded against the floor behind me.

And from that slow, aggressive rhythm alone, I knew exactly what was coming next.

I squeezed my eyes shut, dug my nails into my palms, and prepared myself for the pain.

Today was no different from any other day.

The shadows had failed to hide me again.

JaceThe hallways were empty as I hurried toward the infirmary, taking long, purposeful strides.Willow was light in my arms.Far too light. It felt as though I were carrying a little bird with every bone in its body broken. She had buried her face against my neck, her tiny, trembling fingers clutching my black T-shirt as though her life depended on it.The salty, bitter scent of her tears seemed to seep directly into my skin, and every muffled sob that escaped her chest sliced through mine like a silver blade.Lexi, Zane, and Caleb followed closely behind me.No one said a word. The pack silently closed ranks around us, forming a moving, impenetrable shield around the trembling girl in my arms. When we reached the infirmary door, Lexi stepped forward and pushed down the handle without knocking. The school doctor, Dr. Miller, was leaning over some paperwork at his desk. The man, who was in his fifties with graying temples, was nothing more than a kind, boring doctor to most of the stu

JaceThe air in the school cafeteria was suffocating. For me, being trapped in an enclosed space with so many people had always been pure torture. The overpowering perfumes, greasy food, hormones, and the smell accompanying all that shallow, loud chatter blended into one overwhelming mass that constantly irritated my heightened senses.I sat with my pack at our usual table, tucked away at the far end of the room.We were the group everyone stared at but no one dared approach. To them, we were the rich, arrogant elite. To us, they were blind, fragile mortals who had no idea that the monsters they'd feared as children were now eating in the same cafeteria as them. But right now, I couldn't have cared less about the commotion surrounding us.Only one thing occupied my mind.Willow.I stared at the untouched food on my plastic tray while my mind replayed our encounter in the hallway that morning over and over again. Her touch. That electric, scorching jolt that had raced up my arm when I'

WillowMy lungs were burning, and I could taste blood in my throat by the time I reached our street. I stumbled through the darkness, running along the cracked sidewalk, my left leg sending sharp jolts of pain through me with every step, but the adrenaline kept the pain at bay.I didn't look back.I was convinced that if I turned around, I would see his enormous figure emerging from the darkness, along with those unnaturally green eyes. When I finally reached the rotting wooden porch of our house, my hands trembled as I fumbled with my key, desperately searching for the lock.Just get inside. Just get inside. The metal clicked softly.I slipped in and closed the door behind me as quietly as possible before sliding the bolt into place. The heavy, wet snoring coming from the living room nearly stopped my heart.Victor was still sprawled on the couch in exactly the same position I'd left him. The empty bottle lay on the floor beside him.I crept toward my room on tiptoe, keeping close to

  • A Heart Bound In Shadows   Chapter 5

JaceI stood in the freezing, damp darkness of the alley, but beneath my skin, my wolf was burning. When I saw that girl in the café, her trembling hands, the scent of suppressed pain radiating from beneath her oversized sweater, I had to get out of the building. If I had stayed inside, the beast would have taken control, and I would have torn that shrieking woman apart with my bare hands for making her clean up those broken plates.Through the thin brick wall, my heightened senses picked up every tiny sound. The splashing of water in the sink. Her ragged, panic-stricken breathing. The coppery scent of blood seeping from a fresh cut. Then her boss's screaming. The rage in my chest grew so thick it practically scraped against my ribs, demanding that I kick down the back door. The rusty metal door slammed, signaling that the girl had stepped outside into the night. There she was.She was dragging an enormous black garbage bag behind her. With every step she took, I could hear the chaoti

  • A Heart Bound In Shadows   Chapter 4

WillowThe floor was cold, black grime embedded deep in the grout between the tiles. I stared at that tiny patch of floor as I tried to push the pieces of shattered plates onto the plastic tray with my trembling, bleeding fingers. Coffee stains soaked into my pants, and my knee throbbed from the fall.Brad and Chloe’s laughter echoed inside my head like some distorted, cruel radio broadcast that could never be switched off. The air felt suffocating. Amber was shouting at me from behind the counter to hurry up, but my muscles simply refused to cooperate.“How pathetic…” I heard Brad mutter, followed by another burst of laughter from their table.“I’m taking this out of your paycheck!” Amber shrieked again. The words struck me like physical blows. The money I was saving for Ellie’s future. The money I endured every one of Victor’s kicks to earn.Something hard and burning tightened around my throat, but my eyes remained dry. I could not afford to cry.Not here. Not in front of them.Des

  • A Heart Bound In Shadows   Chapter 3

WillowThe air inside the Neon Café and Bistro was always thick with the smell of burnt oil, coffee grounds, and the sour stench of dirty mop water. When I stepped through the back door, the warm air hitting my face stole my breath for a moment, and my ribs flared with sharp pain at the sudden movement. In the changing room, which was really nothing more than a cramped, windowless storage closet, I tied my black apron over my enormous gray sweater. My hands were still trembling. The swelling beneath my left eye throbbed under the fluorescent light. The concealer had softened the color, but it could not hide the swelling. I just hoped no one would look too closely at my face. The moment I stepped behind the counter, I heard the voice that turned every one of my shifts into a nightmare.“Well, look what the wind dragged in,” Amber’s sharp, mocking voice rang out.Amber was twenty-two and acted as if she owned the place simply because she was the boss’s niece. Her blond hair fell over he
