Everything changed on my twelfth birthday. The brakes failed, the tragic crash, and the death of our parents. My brother blamed it all on me. He ruled as the mafia boss, yet all he showed me was hatred. The only love he had left was for our younger sister. He never believed how sick I became. He accused me of faking my sickness to get attention. He would turn to our sister with a gentleness I never received, he promised to save her, and he promised she would never die on his watch. My heart ended up beating inside her chest even after I died. He finally saw what was left of my damaged body after I was gone. The truth my brother never bothered to face would shatter his world.

Chapter 1

My soul was afloat when my breathing stopped. I watched as the doctor cut my chest open and took out my heart. He hurried out of the operating room with it.

I followed without thinking and saw my brother pacing anxiously in the hallway.

"Was the heart taken out? Arrange the surgery for Yvette Sinclair immediately. This transplant must succeed. Failure is not allowed!" my brother ordered.

My brother, Joseph Sinclair, had the authority as the Mafia Boss, so the doctors nodded in fear.

His assistant spoke cautiously after the doctors left, "Boss, the doctor said the heart donor is a young woman. Her family has not been found yet."

Joseph frowned.

He replied without concern, "Let the hospital keep trying to contact them. I'll give them a large sum of money as compensation once they are found."

His assistant wanted to say more but was cut off impatiently.

"Don't bother me with such small matters again. Handle it yourself. Yvette is about to have surgery, so I can't step away. I need to respond immediately if anything happens to her," he said.

I felt endless frustration and despair after hearing his words.

However, I supposed my death meant nothing to Joseph.

My brother who once loved me most saw me as his enemy from the day our parents died.

"Wendy, this is all your fault. If you hadn't insisted on going to the amusement park, our parents wouldn't have died in that car accident. Look at Yvette. She stayed quietly at home that day. If you were half as sensible as her, our parents would still be alive."

Joseph rarely came home after our parents died, and even when he did, he only cared about our younger sister, Yvette.

He would cross half the city to buy desserts that Yvette liked. He carefully prepared every one of her birthday banquets.

He also cancelled an important meeting because he received a phone call from her.

All of those treatments once belonged only to me.

Joseph would not even glance my way after the accident.

He never knew that I was not unharmed in the accident that took the lives of our parents.

The violent impact destroyed my lungs.

I did not receive proper treatment. I suffered respiratory failure after only six short years, and I did not have much time left.

Yvette suddenly fainted six months ago. She was diagnosed with heart failure after being sent to the hospital.

Joseph hired the best heart specialists in the world at the private hospital owned by Sinclair Enterprise. He paid a huge price to search for a willing heart donor.

I knew that was my only chance to ease the relationship with Joseph. I signed the organ donation agreement willingly before I died.

I hoped that after my heart saved the sister he loved most, Joseph would forgive me.

His phone rang while I was drowning in sorrow.

He frowned deeply when he saw the caller ID.

It was the nanny who took care of me.

All the servants in the mansion tried to please Yvette and ignored me completely after Joseph cut ties with me.

Only the nanny who had raised me since childhood stayed by my side because she could not bear to leave me.

Joseph hung up without hesitation.

The nanny called again before he could put his phone down.

His assistant reminded him kindly, "You should pick up. She has called several times. Maybe Wendy has an emergency."

Disgust flashed in his eyes.

"What kind of emergency could she have? She vomited blood at home before and scared everyone. I rushed back and she was completely fine. How am I supposed to believe her?" he asked.

Tears fell from my eyes.

'I only didn't want you to worry. I took medicine every time before you came back…' I thought.

Joseph finally answered before the call disconnected.

I could hear the anxious voice of the nanny.

"Sir, Wendy was taken by an ambulance to your private hospital. Are you at the hospital too? Have you seen Wendy?" she asked.
