THE ONE THING SHE WAS SURE OF

It was the sudden ringing of her phone that woke her up. She turned away from Max, who had also woken up.

As she left his embrace and reached for her phone, picking the call, he sat up on the bed, yawning beside her.

"Dad," was the first word that came out of her mouth, proceeded by a shaky breath.

"Sweetheart, I was wrong. Please come back home and we will talk," her father's voice came from the other line. Max heard every word.

"Okay," Shirley muttered, and then hung up. She turned to look at Max whose eyes had been on her the whole time.

"You heard my dad. I have to go back home. If not for anything, for his own safety," she said as she started to push off the duvet with her feet, getting off the bed.

"And what about your safety? Don't you realize that this could be a trap?" Max asked and she scoffed, and then turned to glare at him, her hands crossed together against her chest.

"My father wouldn't hurt me," she insisted and he scoffed, shaking his head doubtfully at her.
