SCARLETT

My head snapped toward Anna instantly.

“Find the children. I’ll contact Callum,” I said, patting my back pocket for my phone. My heart sank as I realized I’d left it in the car and didn’t bring it with me.

“How? Let’s find them together, Scarlett!” she said hurriedly, grabbing my hand.

We both ran up the staircase, but we froze in our tracks at the sound of the heavy boot thuds coming from above us. Our heads whipped back in unison, panic seizing us as the footsteps behind us grew louder.

“Run!” I hissed, swiftly maneuvering my hands to hold hers tightly and we darted into a passage to the left.

Breathing heavily, we hurried down the narrow hallway.

“I can hear the pups’ heartbeats,” I said, glancing at Anna. She shook her head, her voice trembling.

“How about we get out of here first and come back for them, more armed?”
