By the time morning came, Diana had already forgotten the sting of Alexander's rejection and was ready to take on whatever the day threw at her.

Optimism filled her whole life.

Everything was fantastic.

Her contract also stipulated that, so she wouldn't waste time crisscrossing the city to drop the kids at different schools, Victoria would be enrolled with Nathan and Gabriel too.

That wouldn't kick in until the following week, though, once Alexander could sort it out with the school.

Diana was still dazed when Alexander let her go.She hadn't understood why he'd kissed her until she heard Tiffany's voice."I thought you invited me to dinner so we could be together, not so I could watch you kissing... her," the woman complained.Diana tensed and shot Alexander a venomous look. She couldn't believe he'd made her get dressed up just to rub it in his mistress's face."This is my wife. That's exactly why I'm kissing her. It would be strange if you saw me kissing anyone else," her husband replied, and wrapped his arm around her waist, possessive. "I thought it might be a good idea to smooth things over. Apparently there was some misunderstanding at the school we could sort out over dinner. After you, Tiffany."She wanted to bolt, but Alexander didn't let go of her."You bring your mistress into this house, not caring that your kids are here, and on top of it you're trying to humiliate me?" Diana murmured, low enough for only him to hear.Alexander looked at her, offende

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 30: He wanted to drag her to his room, tear that dress off her, and let her heal his soul.

Alexander watched Diana storm off, furious. He tried to peel Tiffany off him without making a scene and offered her a dinner invitation at his house instead. He and that woman had had a brief fling once. He'd thought he could marry her, give his kids the mother they kept begging for, but it hadn't worked out. Neither Nathan nor Gabriel had liked her, and they'd done everything in their power to scare her off—something he was grateful for now, since they'd saved him from making a terrible mistake. The moment he managed to shake off Tiffany and the headmistress, he rushed outside, but he only caught a glimpse of his wife climbing into the car and driving away."Looks like nothing too bad happened, after all," Roger said, falling into step beside him.Alexander smiled, still watching the car carry Diana down the road."She was jealous," he murmured, a goofy grin sneaking onto his face."The headmistress?""No, idiot. My wife."Diana. Jealous. Who would've thought.***The day wore on, an

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 29: You Can Make It Up to Me Over Dinner

Alexander had shown up at the office in a pretty good mood that morning. He'd decided he was going to build a real relationship with his wife and start trusting his gut instead of letting the thoughts that tortured him call the shots. His instincts had always served him well in business — why should it be any different with women? He'd give Diana the benefit of the doubt, and he was hoping that little by little she'd open up to him and finally tell him about her past."You're in a good mood this morning, Mr. Turner," Roger greeted him. "Did you have a nice night with your wife, by any chance?""I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm exactly like I always am — my wife has nothing to do with my mood. By the way, I need a nanny.""You already have one, or are you getting a divorce?""Diana is my wife, not the nanny. I need someone to look after my kids so I can spend time with — I need a nanny, end of story. Since when do I owe anyone an explanation?""I see your hypothetical frie

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 28: You're Supposed to Wake Me with a Kiss, Diana

When morning came and the alarm went off, signaling the start of the day, Diana didn't want to move, because Alexander was lying right there beside her. He still had his arms around her, and he looked relaxed. If he wakes up and realizes he fell asleep next to me, he might start yelling like he did the other day, she thought. So she tried to slip out of bed before he opened his eyes, but there was no getting away."I've been awake for a while," he murmured, his voice rough with sleep, and pulled her tighter against him. "I didn't want to move and wake you up."The day before, crying, Diana had come to a decision: she wasn't going to fight for her marriage anymore. She'd also told herself she wasn't going to let him keep hurting her with that push-and-pull he kept putting her through. She was tired of getting her hopes crushed. It would be so much easier if he'd just stay cold, so her heart could finally get the message — but the second her husband wrapped his arms around her, her body

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 27: He needed Diana to open up to him and tell him everything.

Alexander stayed in the kitchen and watched her go.She hadn't looked like someone who was lying. Her tears hadn't looked fake, and neither had the pain in her eyes.He wanted to go after her — he didn't know what he wanted to hear, but he couldn't stand seeing her so miserable over having married him.I've fallen into the same trap again, and this time without my father pulling the strings. The sentence kept looping in his mind.Fallen into what, exactly? And what had that bastard of a father pulled strings on?His head started spinning. He had to get to the bottom of it. He had to know...He grabbed his phone and called his assistant, not caring what time it was. After several rings, Roger picked up."Tell me what you found out about my wife!" he demanded, skipping the hello."Good evening to you too, Mr. Turner. What a joy to be dragged out of a perfectly good sleep by shouting. I assume you'll be paying me overtime for calls at this ungodly hour.""I'm not in the mood for your gam

  • A Little Stepmother in Trouble   Chapter 26: You'll Never See Me as a Woman, Only as the Mother of Your Children

Diana headed for the kitchen, caught between the headache from crying and the hunger from missing dinner, and with every step her mood got worse.Though her bad mood had a first and last name: Alexander Turner, her husband and the most insufferable man she'd ever met.Even her ex-husband didn't reach that level—at least Izan had bothered to pretend he liked her for a whole year. Then he'd shown just how despicable he really was, but Alexander had been like that from day one. Well, at least that way she knew exactly what she was dealing with and could stop kidding herself.Diana took her pill and started digging through the fridge for something to eat. That's how Alexander found her, trying to grab a liter of yogurt off the top shelf. The object of her desire was pushed too far back, and she was struggling to reach it. On her tiptoes, stretching as far as she could, she finally managed to snag it with her fingertips.Right when she had it and was about to pull it down, her husband deci
