Chapter 6

Author: Mountain Dreamer
When I returned to the apartment, I found that the door code had been changed.

The property manager stood outside, looking awkward. "Mr. Callahan, this apartment is registered under Ms. Monroe's name. The company just notified us that, effective today, you're no longer allowed to use it."

My belongings had been packed into several cardboard boxes and dumped haphazardly in the hallway.

My trophies, scripts, and clothes were all mixed together. One of my trophies had even been broken off at the base. It was the first Best Actor award I'd ever won.

On the night I received it, Zara had held me in her arms and told me that this trophy mattered more to her than every business the Monroe family owned.

Now, her staff had thrown it on the floor like a piece of trash.

I picked up the broken trophy, pulled my laptop out of a box, and sat down in the hallway to check my work email.

Incorrect password.

I couldn't access the company's cloud drive, publicity platform, or business management system either.

I had also been forcibly logged out of my public social media account. I tried to recover my password, only to discover that the phone number linked to the account had long since been changed to the company's number.

Monroe Media hadn't started controlling my work today.

Ever since Zara had personally taken on the role of my executive assistant, she'd held every channel through which I communicated with the outside world in her hands.

I once believed she was protecting me. Only now did I realize that those same controls could lock me inside a prison at any moment.

My phone rang again. Zara was calling.

I hung up.

She called six more times in a row before sending me a message.

[Come back when you're done throwing your tantrum. If you apologize to me, I'll bury all the negative publicity about you. Without Monroe Media speaking up for you, no one will listen to your side of the story.]

A few seconds later, my management team issued another statement: [Bridger is temporarily suspending work due to health reasons. He has absolutely no plans to retire from the entertainment industry. We ask the public not to spread false information.]

Even my right to leave was something Zara wanted to control.

I opened my laptop and searched deep in my email for an account I hadn't logged into in years. I created it when I first entered the entertainment industry.

Back then, I had no assistant and no team. I used that account to document my life as an extra, day after day.

After Zara founded her company, I never used it again. The account had never been connected to Monroe Media. It was still linked to my own ID and phone number.

I completed the identity verification process, placed my three trophies and identification documents in front of the camera, and recorded a video.

"I'm Bridger Callahan. The statement my management team just released was published without my consent. From this moment on, nothing posted by that account represents me or speaks on my behalf."

After uploading the video, I opened the retirement announcement I'd already drafted.

"I'm Bridger Callahan, and effective immediately, I'm officially retiring from the entertainment industry.

I will honor my existing contracts and take responsibility for any applicable termination fees for projects that have yet to begin filming.

"As for what happened on set, I will release a full statement once my injuries have been assessed and all relevant evidence has been gathered.

"Thank you to everyone who genuinely enjoyed my work."

Before sending it out, I forwarded the announcement to the film association and three media outlets.

Then I logged into the cloud. The photos of the confirmation forms the director had deleted were still intact in my album.

I backed up the on-site recordings, my doctor's diagnosis, and the false apology statement the company had prepared.

Then I called the person in charge of my family trust.

"Unfreeze the funds under my name. Transfer $300 million to Monroe Media first."

Zara thought that leaving her meant I'd lose everything.

But she'd forgotten something. I'd already spent two years struggling to survive in this industry on my own before I met her three years ago.

My first role wasn't something she'd given me out of charity. I'd ranked first in that audition from the beginning.

She'd simply appeared when I was at my most miserable and made me mistake her help for salvation.

I looked at the retirement announcement on my screen and hit "Send".

Ten seconds later, the comments had topped ten thousand. A minute later, the related topics were trending.

[Bridger Callahan Announces Retirement]

[Bridger Callahan Denies His Own Management Team's Statement]

[Bridger Callahan Says He Will Release Evidence From the Film Set]

The narrative Monroe Media had prepared was torn open in an instant.

People online began asking why an actor couldn't control his own account, and why I had decided to leave the industry for good just hours after being dropped by the production.

Elina took my hand, and together we walked back down the red carpet. As we exchanged rings, I noticed that her hand was trembling slightly.I leaned closer and whispered, "What are you nervous about?"She pressed her lips together. "I'm afraid you'll regret this. I'm afraid you'll see her and change your mind."I froze for a moment. "You knew she'd come?""I guessed.""Then why weren't you afraid just now?"Elina looked into my eyes. "I was. My hands were shaking. But after they took her away, you didn't even look at her."She slipped the ring onto my finger. Her touch was so gentle, as though she were afraid of hurting me. "That's when I stopped being afraid."The wedding ended, and the guests gradually dispersed.I sat in the bridal suite, taking the lapel pin off my suit.Elina knocked and came in. She'd changed out of her wedding dress and was wearing comfortable clothes. Her hair was slightly mussed. She stood by the door and took a deep breath, as though she'd been pr

  • A Love Buried in Ashes   Chapter 17

On our wedding day, the first snow of the winter fell over Port Red.The Callahan and Conrad families were joining together through marriage. Just the names of the two families side by side were enough to keep high society talking for the next three years. The hotel's ballroom was filled with white roses and baby's breath. Three thousand flowers lined the path from the entrance to the end of the red carpet. The guest list was packed with leading figures from every industry. The names alone in the guest book could have filled a history of modern business.I took my mother's arm and walked step by step toward Elina. She stood at the end of the red carpet, wearing a pristine white wedding gown, her long hair pinned up and her makeup immaculate. When she saw me, her gaze suddenly softened, like a beam of light falling across a sheet of ice. Her throat moved as though she were holding something back.I walked up to her.She reached out and took the hand my mother placed in hers.My

The wedding was set for a month later.Throughout that month, Elina came to the Callahan estate every day.Sometimes she brought my mother her favorite flowers. Other times, she kept my father company while he played chess. My father was a terrible chess player, but he had a terrible temper, too. Taking back a move was practically a daily occurrence. Elina always pretended not to notice and even praised him for making a brilliant move.I had to bite back laughter beside them until my stomach hurt. One evening, Elina arrived earlier than usual. She was carrying two cups of coffee."One sugar, triple shot." She handed me one of the cups.I took it and had a sip. "How did you know I like a triple-shot?""You posted about it on social media once. There was a picture of coffee, and your caption said, 'Coffee without a triple shot has no soul.'""That post was from two years ago."Elina took a sip of her own drink and fell silent, but her ears turned red again.I'd noticed that El

In the days that followed, the Callahan family's retaliation came swiftly and quietly. There were no public statements, no messages exchanged through the media. It was like a silent blade, cutting into Monroe Media's vital interests one strike at a time.Within three days, the Callahan Group terminated two major partnership projects with Monroe Media. The banks that worked with the company reassessed its business risks. Three of its core advertisers terminated their contracts at the same time.Investigations were also launched into Monroe Media's unauthorized use of an artist's account and its coercion of an actor into performing dangerous scenes.Zara was overwhelmed. Only then did she understand who the Callahan family of Port Red truly was.A week later, the Monroe family held an emergency internal meeting. The decision was to expel Zara from the family. The official reason was dressed up in respectable language: [Due to personal conduct that has seriously damaged the family'

I sat on the plane, watching the lights of South Chilton recede through the window."Elina.""Hmm?""Thank you for coming to South Chilton to pick me up tonight.""Of course. You're my fiance." She said it in a matter-of-fact tone, as casually as if she were commenting on the weather. But I noticed the tips of her ears turning faintly red.For some reason, I felt an enormous sense of relief. At last, I had someone I could lean on, at least for a little while.I still had no idea where this marriage would lead, but for now, she was on my side. That was enough."Does your wrist still hurt?" Elina suddenly asked.I instinctively tucked my hand into my sleeve. "No."She said nothing. Instead, she took a tube of cream from her coat pocket and handed it to me.I looked at it. It was for bruises. "You carry this around with you?""I prepared it before leaving." She paused. "I guessed she might not let you leave peacefully."I stared at her for a moment. "You knew she'd come to th

The Callahan family of Port Red, the undisputed most powerful family in the city. For countless people, it was a destination they could only dream of reaching. All the color drained from Zara's face."That's impossible. He can't be part of the Callahan family. If he's an heir to the Callahan fortune, why would he become an actor?"She suddenly looked up at me. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? If you'd told me earlier, how could I have...""Cheated?" I finished for her.Zara was speechless. The corners of my mouth lifted slightly. "Zara, are you saying you cheated because you thought I had no powerful family backing me? If you'd known I was the Callahan heir, you wouldn't have dared."I laughed. "You weren't afraid of hurting me. You were afraid of the consequences."Zara opened her mouth, but no words came out."Back then, you said that people who looked down on actors were only exposing the darkness inside themselves. Now I'm giving those words right back to you."I didn't lo
