Chapter 5

作者: Mountain Dreamer
A crew member brought over a blanket, but Zara stopped him with a raised hand.

I sat by the edge of the pool, soaked from head to toe, water dripping from my hair onto the ground.

Zara motioned for someone from the legal team to hand me an agreement. "Sign this, and your role in the film will be preserved."

I opened the document.

The first clause required me to admit that the on-set altercation had occurred because I was jealous of Kyson.

The second required me to provide Kyson with ongoing acting guidance.

The third stipulated that I would unconditionally cooperate with publicity campaigns for every production Kyson appeared in from then on.

The final clause prohibited me from publicly discussing anything that had happened on set that day.

I looked up at Zara. "You want me to pave the way for him?"

"Kyson lacks experience. Guiding him for a while won't cost you anything."

"He took my notes and replaced me in my role. Now you want me to teach him personally, too?"

Zara frowned. "It's just sharing resources. Don't make it sound so ugly."

Kyson approached, wrapped in his bathrobe. "Bridger, you've already won all three major acting awards. Surely you won't mind training another award-winning actor? When I win awards in the future, I'll be sure to thank you in my interviews."

He smiled with practiced sweetness. "Then everyone will know that you're the one who made me."

I finally understood.

Zara didn't just intend to make Kyson a star. She wanted me to personally deliver him to the position I'd fought so hard to earn.

If I signed that agreement, everything Kyson had stolen from me would become something I'd willingly given him.

"What if I refuse to sign?"

Zara's expression turned cold. "You're already being condemned for bullying a newcomer, and every bit of your work is controlled by Monroe Media. Without me, you won't even get a supporting role in this industry."

She leaned down and lowered her voice. "Bridger, you have no other way out."

I looked at her for several seconds, then tore the agreement in half.

Kyson recoiled in alarm.

Zara grabbed my wrist. "Bridger!"

I endured the pain in my wrist and told her, word by word, "I don't want the role anymore. I don't want Monroe Media's resources, either. And as for you and him—I want nothing to do with either of you."

Zara's fingers tightened around my wrist. "Delete every scene he's filmed."

Garrick froze. "Zara, Bridger has already filmed quite a few important scenes. Deleting all of them will affect the production schedule."

"Rewrite the ." Zara stared at me. "From this day forward, no project funded by Monroe Media is allowed to hire Bridger.

"Notify our partner platforms and brands. Anyone who continues working with him will be going against Monroe Media."

The set fell silent.

Several crew members who had been about to offer me towels quickly looked away.

Zara thought I'd be afraid.

Instead, I asked Garrick, "Where's the original Harlem left behind?"

Garrick avoided my eyes. "The film has already been approved for production. The investors decide how the is revised."

Kyson linked his arm through Zara's again. "Bridger, you've lost your role. Why are you still worrying about the ? I'll be the one playing this story from now on. And in the end, I'll be the only one the audience remembers."

I ignored him, clutched my acting notebook to my chest, and turned to leave the studio.

Behind me, Zara's voice rang out, cold and hard. "Let him go. Once he walks out that door, he'll come crawling back to beg me sooner or later."

That evening, the production team's official account announced the termination of my contract.

[Bridger Callahan refused to follow production management, repeatedly putting on airs, and seriously disrupted the filming schedule. After review, the production team has decided to terminate its collaboration with him effective immediately. All previously filmed footage featuring him will be deleted.]

Monroe Media promptly reposted the announcement.

[We stand against artists with a history of misconduct. No one is above the rules.]

Within minutes, all seven brands I worked with announced the termination of their partnerships with me.

Three productions I'd already signed contracts with ended their agreements, while two projects still under negotiation replaced me outright.

My agent, Marvin Duncan, called. His voice was heavy. "Bridger, the company just reassigned our entire team. Zara has also arranged for word to spread throughout the industry that no production in South City is allowed to hire you."

After the call ended, Zara sent me a text.

[Come back and apologize now, and the agreement will still stand.]

I deleted the message.

A second text arrived immediately afterward.

[You have until tonight.]

Elina took my hand, and together we walked back down the red carpet. As we exchanged rings, I noticed that her hand was trembling slightly.I leaned closer and whispered, "What are you nervous about?"She pressed her lips together. "I'm afraid you'll regret this. I'm afraid you'll see her and change your mind."I froze for a moment. "You knew she'd come?""I guessed.""Then why weren't you afraid just now?"Elina looked into my eyes. "I was. My hands were shaking. But after they took her away, you didn't even look at her."She slipped the ring onto my finger. Her touch was so gentle, as though she were afraid of hurting me. "That's when I stopped being afraid."The wedding ended, and the guests gradually dispersed.I sat in the bridal suite, taking the lapel pin off my suit.Elina knocked and came in. She'd changed out of her wedding dress and was wearing comfortable clothes. Her hair was slightly mussed. She stood by the door and took a deep breath, as though she'd been pr

  • A Love Buried in Ashes   Chapter 17

On our wedding day, the first snow of the winter fell over Port Red.The Callahan and Conrad families were joining together through marriage. Just the names of the two families side by side were enough to keep high society talking for the next three years. The hotel's ballroom was filled with white roses and baby's breath. Three thousand flowers lined the path from the entrance to the end of the red carpet. The guest list was packed with leading figures from every industry. The names alone in the guest book could have filled a history of modern business.I took my mother's arm and walked step by step toward Elina. She stood at the end of the red carpet, wearing a pristine white wedding gown, her long hair pinned up and her makeup immaculate. When she saw me, her gaze suddenly softened, like a beam of light falling across a sheet of ice. Her throat moved as though she were holding something back.I walked up to her.She reached out and took the hand my mother placed in hers.My

The wedding was set for a month later.Throughout that month, Elina came to the Callahan estate every day.Sometimes she brought my mother her favorite flowers. Other times, she kept my father company while he played chess. My father was a terrible chess player, but he had a terrible temper, too. Taking back a move was practically a daily occurrence. Elina always pretended not to notice and even praised him for making a brilliant move.I had to bite back laughter beside them until my stomach hurt. One evening, Elina arrived earlier than usual. She was carrying two cups of coffee."One sugar, triple shot." She handed me one of the cups.I took it and had a sip. "How did you know I like a triple-shot?""You posted about it on social media once. There was a picture of coffee, and your caption said, 'Coffee without a triple shot has no soul.'""That post was from two years ago."Elina took a sip of her own drink and fell silent, but her ears turned red again.I'd noticed that El

In the days that followed, the Callahan family's retaliation came swiftly and quietly. There were no public statements, no messages exchanged through the media. It was like a silent blade, cutting into Monroe Media's vital interests one strike at a time.Within three days, the Callahan Group terminated two major partnership projects with Monroe Media. The banks that worked with the company reassessed its business risks. Three of its core advertisers terminated their contracts at the same time.Investigations were also launched into Monroe Media's unauthorized use of an artist's account and its coercion of an actor into performing dangerous scenes.Zara was overwhelmed. Only then did she understand who the Callahan family of Port Red truly was.A week later, the Monroe family held an emergency internal meeting. The decision was to expel Zara from the family. The official reason was dressed up in respectable language: [Due to personal conduct that has seriously damaged the family'

I sat on the plane, watching the lights of South Chilton recede through the window."Elina.""Hmm?""Thank you for coming to South Chilton to pick me up tonight.""Of course. You're my fiance." She said it in a matter-of-fact tone, as casually as if she were commenting on the weather. But I noticed the tips of her ears turning faintly red.For some reason, I felt an enormous sense of relief. At last, I had someone I could lean on, at least for a little while.I still had no idea where this marriage would lead, but for now, she was on my side. That was enough."Does your wrist still hurt?" Elina suddenly asked.I instinctively tucked my hand into my sleeve. "No."She said nothing. Instead, she took a tube of cream from her coat pocket and handed it to me.I looked at it. It was for bruises. "You carry this around with you?""I prepared it before leaving." She paused. "I guessed she might not let you leave peacefully."I stared at her for a moment. "You knew she'd come to th

The Callahan family of Port Red, the undisputed most powerful family in the city. For countless people, it was a destination they could only dream of reaching. All the color drained from Zara's face."That's impossible. He can't be part of the Callahan family. If he's an heir to the Callahan fortune, why would he become an actor?"She suddenly looked up at me. "Why didn't you tell me sooner? If you'd told me earlier, how could I have...""Cheated?" I finished for her.Zara was speechless. The corners of my mouth lifted slightly. "Zara, are you saying you cheated because you thought I had no powerful family backing me? If you'd known I was the Callahan heir, you wouldn't have dared."I laughed. "You weren't afraid of hurting me. You were afraid of the consequences."Zara opened her mouth, but no words came out."Back then, you said that people who looked down on actors were only exposing the darkness inside themselves. Now I'm giving those words right back to you."I didn't lo
