Chapter 2 Thrown Out of My Own Home

Penulis: Lena
I was jolted awake the next morning by my phone. Notifications kept popping up one after another—screenshots from social media, forwarded messages from group chats—as though everyone was afraid I might somehow miss them.

The moment I opened the first image, my breathing stopped.

Charles and Diana were standing outside the vital records office, holding their marriage certificate and smiling happily. Beneath the photo was a flood of congratulatory messages.

I kept scrolling and saw a post from Gavin. 'Getting my buddy to this day hasn't been easy. Congratulations on finally getting your wish.'

The photos included Charles, Diana, and pictures from their wedding the year before.

The moment I opened the group photo, my hand trembled.

There were so many familiar faces. Gavin was there, and so was Jessie Slater. Even my adoptive parents were there. My mother was smiling. My father stood beside her, handing someone a glass of wine.

Everyone looked completely at ease. I was the only one who had been shut out from beginning to end, like a complete joke.

I turned my phone face down on the bed, a wave of heaviness pressing against my chest.

But the phone kept ringing.

Someone in the company group chat had posted a video from the private room the night before, and they deliberately clipped out only the most chaotic part.

In the footage, I stood there looking furious. Diana was crying pitifully, while Charles stood protectively in front of her, as though he were shielding his bullied wife.

The caption was even more disgusting. 'Woman exposed for interfering in another couple's relationship throws liquor and causes a scene on the spot.'

It did not take long for people to recognise me.

'Isn't this Juliet Whitfield?'

'You really couldn't tell from how she usually acts.'

'No wonder her boyfriend never made her public. Turns out she was the homewrecker. Someone tag the mother-in-law and have her come catch the mistress!'

I sat there as my fingertips slowly went cold.

Charles knew perfectly well that I was not a homewrecker, yet he had not offered a single word of explanation. His silence was the same as admitting their accusations were true.

It took me a long time to pull myself together before I got up to wash my face.

I still had to go to the hospital to see my younger sister, Rosalie Whitfield, that day. She hadn't been doing well lately, and the last thing I wanted was for her to see any of this.

But before I could even leave, a payment reminder from the hospital popped up on my phone. There was still a shortfall in the cost of her upcoming treatment.

I stared at the string of numbers for a long time.

…

Eventually, I returned home.

It was the place Charles and I had lived in for four years. I had once put so much thought into decorating this home. I had even dreamed of paying the place off once I earned enough. Back then, I had carefully planned our future.

But there was no future anymore.

I had just stepped into the living room when I heard the door open behind me.

Charles and Diana walked in together, still dressed in the formal clothes they had worn for their wedding photos.

I stared at him, and whatever warmth remained in my heart turned completely cold. Then, I laughed. "Do you two have any idea that everyone is calling me a homewrecker now because of those photos?"

Charles frowned. "Everyone knows Diana and I have been legally married for a long time. It's just a post."

Diana spoke up as well, a trace of impatience already creeping into her voice. "Juliet, could you stop blaming everything on us? Everyone's happy for us. What's wrong with that?"

I wondered if she knew how absurd she sounded.

I took a deep breath and had nothing left to say.

"Get out."

Charles looked at me as though I had just told him a joke. "You want me to get out? I've paid for a lot of things over the years. The renovations, the property fees, the parking space, and plenty of other expenses. Do you really think you could have afforded to live here on your own? This will be mine and Diana's home from now on. If you have a problem with that, you can get out."

I stood there without moving for a long time.

I had saved the down payment for this apartment little by little after I started working.

On the day we signed the contract, my hands trembled with excitement. Charles had held me in his arms and told me that this would be our home from then on.

I had even taken a picture of the keys and sent it to Diana. She had replied, 'That's wonderful.'

As it turned out, she had been waiting for this since then.

Not wanting to argue any more, I efficiently packed up my belongings.

As I walked out the door, I heard Charles say behind me, "If you walk out that door, I won't give you another cent."

I stood inside the elevator, my fingers clenched tightly around the suitcase handle. I had bitten the inside of my mouth until I tasted blood, yet I could not feel the pain.

All I could feel was an overwhelming sense of humiliation.

Still, I left without looking back. I was determined to get as far away from their world as possible.

Charles had lost a lot of weight. The calm confidence that had once made him seem so unshakable, as though he could effortlessly keep everyone around him under control, had been worn away little by little over the past two years.Perhaps because he saw that I was not turning around and walking away, he seemed to breathe a little easier."Are you doing well now?" he asked."Pretty well.""Are you really?" He looked at me as though he couldn't quite believe it."I really am."The wind blew in from the end of the street, sending fallen leaves skittering across the pavement.Charles remained silent for a long time before finally speaking. "I used to think you wouldn't really leave. I thought that no matter what I did, you'd eventually stay right where you were."I listened without responding.Because he was right. The person I had been back then really had been too willing to endure. But I was not that person anymore. He lowered his head, his voice hoarse. "Is there really not e

Two years later, Rosalie and I returned home. When the plane landed, the sky outside was bright. I sat in my seat and watched as the familiar city slowly spread out beyond the window. I felt none of the breathless misery I had felt when I left, nor the uneasiness I had imagined I would feel upon returning.I was simply calm.It was as though I had taken a long detour, only to find myself standing here again.Scott was already waiting at the airport exit. He did not bring any flowers or arrange any elaborate welcome. He simply took our luggage and handed us hot drinks. "Tired from the flight?"Rosalie hugged her cup and quietly said, "Thank you."He smiled and casually opened the car door for us.During the drive, he did not mention anything about the past. He only told us that he had already arranged a place for us to stay. It was close to both the hospital and the company. If we were not comfortable there, we could change places. There was no rush.I sat in the back seat, watc

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 8 Starting Over

After Rosalie had spent a full year receiving treatment abroad, her condition finally stabilized. She still needed to continue rehabilitation, and her walking was still not quite back to normal, but at least she no longer woke up in a panic throughout the night or trembled whenever she heard certain names. On the day of her follow-up examination, the doctor closed her medical record and told me, "Her body will recover gradually, and so will her emotions."I sat in the chair and let out a long breath. For the entire year, I had been wound tight. The night before every follow-up appointment, I could barely sleep. Whenever I woke up in the middle of the night, I would check on Rosalie to make sure her breathing was steady, her forehead was not too warm, and she had taken her medication on schedule.Once she could slowly start doing things on her own, I began taking on online freelance work. It did not pay much, but at least I no longer had to survive solely on what was left from sel

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 7 I Don't Want to See You

I had originally thought that once Charles failed to find me, enough time would pass and he would eventually give up. But I had underestimated him.…That day, I had just returned from the pharmacy with a bag of medicine in my hand. The moment I reached the hospital room, I saw a figure outside the door. He wore a black overcoat, his shoulders still held straight, but he had lost a considerable amount of weight.I stopped in my tracks.Charles saw me, too. Before I could say anything, Rosalie, who was lying on the hospital bed, suddenly went pale. Her fingers clenched tightly around the edge of the blanket, her breathing became erratic, and her shoulders began trembling uncontrollably.I hurried over, set the medicine on the cabinet, and stepped directly in front of the bed, blocking her from view. "What are you doing here?"Charles looked at me, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed. "I came to see how you two were doing.""You've seen us. You can leave now."He did no

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 6 Slowly, Life Moved Forward

During the first month after I moved abroad, I barely got a full night's sleep.Rosalie's condition was worse than the doctors had initially expected. During the day, she seemed relatively calm, but something always went wrong at night. Sometimes she would lie there with her eyes closed, tears slipping down her cheeks as she repeated the same sentence over and over. "My sister isn't like that… She's not…"I would sit beside her bed, holding her hand and calling her name again and again, but she seemed unable to wake up no matter how hard I tried.During the day, I accompanied her to her examinations. At night, I stayed by her side. I was even afraid to stop and wash my face in case I missed something important. When we first arrived abroad, my command of the local language was not fluent enough for me to handle all the hospital procedures on my own. The medical terminology was especially difficult. Whenever the doctors spoke too quickly, I could only listen while frantically ta

  • A Love Story Without Me   Chapter 5 The Truth Comes to Light

When Charles arrived at the hospital, the hospital room was already empty. The nurse looked up at him. "You're too late. The family just finished the paperwork, and the patient was transferred to another hospital.""Where?""I'm sorry, but I can't disclose that."He stood in the doorway, his expression growing grimmer by the second. He pulled out his phone and called my number. The only thing that came through the receiver was a mechanical female voice. "The number you have dialed is no longer in service."Next, he went to the place where I had been staying. The landlord was crouched by the doorway, sorting vegetables. When Charles asked about me, the landlord answered him without even looking up. "She already moved out. She already returned the keys. Didn't even have time to collect her deposit. She left in a hurry."Charles stood outside the empty apartment for a long time, unable to say a word. But the scandal back home did not die down just because I had left.At first, th
