Kayla's pov

Ingrid stood frozen in the doorway, holding a tote bag and wearing a look of complete panic.

“I—um—Dr. Marcus said you were awake and I—oh, wow, okay—” she stammered, backing up a step.

Adrian cleared his throat and leaned back, running a hand through his hair. I tugged the hospital blanket a little higher and avoided both of their eyes.

“This is awkward,” Ingrid muttered, looking between us. “Especially since, you know… you two are supposed to be siblings.”

I groaned and buried my face in my hands. “Thanks for the reminder, Ingrid.”

She gave a nervous little laugh and stepped into the room before awkwardly walking forward and placing the bag down on the chair. “I brought you a change of clothes and some stuff from your room. Also… soup. Because you keep skipping meals.”

“Thank you,” I mumbled.

She gave me a quick hug and narrowed her eyes at Adrian. “Keep it PG while I’m gone. Or, better yet, don’t.”

“No wait, I’m going downstairs to get her prescription,”
