Kayla's pov

I blinked against the harsh white light overhead, my mouth dry, my limbs heavy. The smell of antiseptic clung to the air like a warning sign, and the faint beeping of a heart monitor ticked softly beside me.

Where…?

“Kayla?”

Adrian’s voice was the first thing I heard clearly. I turned my head, and there he was, sitting on the chair beside my bed, his brows knitted tight and his usually sharp eyes full of concern.

“You’re awake,” he breathed in relief, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from my face. His hand lingered for a second before pulling back.

“What happened?” I rasped, my throat dry like sandpaper.

“You fainted again,” Adrian said gently. “In the hallway. You scared the hell out of me.”

I closed my eyes for a second. Oh. Right. The picture, Louisa, the argument—everything came rushing back in pieces.

“I didn’t mean to,” I whispered.

“I know. But i think you’ve been pushing yourself too hard, no one should faint this often.”
