Chapter 8

Author: Genius Dragon
Chase lowered his head. His expression gave nothing away. "Enough. I'm never going to divorce her."

Imogen's hand trembled. A slice of apple slipped from her fingers and rolled across the floor, drawing attention. She hurried to coo, "Oh no! I'm so sorry, Mr. Grimm! I'm such a dummy…"

Chase lifted his head and looked at her with a gentle gaze. "It's alright. Three-second rule."

I turned away from the window and the ward. Any hesitation had drained from my heart. It was time for me to leave.

I spent a year abroad.

Eve continued to text me periodic updates about Chase. Nothing significant changed at the company. Chase carried on with his work and his life, as though nothing of value had been lost.

Imogen, however, never fully faded into the background. She kept making conspicuous mistakes at work, yet no one ever penalized her. Someone at the top always stepped in when she needed support. In twelve months, she rose from secretary to personal aide, then to senior aide, and finally t

Chase looked at me with an apologetic expression. "Greta, I'm sorry. I didn't—""How many times do I have to tell you? You don't need to explain anything to me," I cut him off. "In fact, whatever you told her just now was exactly what I wanted to tell you. Get out of my sight and stay away from me and Mackin. You disgust me."Chase refused to divorce me until the very end, which left me no choice but to sue him in court.I won custody of Mackin, as expected, but the Grimms gained visitation rights. My father was the real architect behind that arrangement. He explained, "You wouldn't want the empire the Grimms built to be inherited by some other woman's child, would you? All of that is Mackin's birthright, and we will make sure it stays that way."Frankly, I could not care less about the Grimms' so-called business empire. Still, I did not mind my son gaining more people who loved him. When Paul and Karoline learned that they could visit Mackin anytime they wanted, they grew ecstat

My father shot me an irritated look. "God, I never should have agreed to let you name the baby something so horrible and stupid."That evening, Chase threw his worst tantrum yet at Imogen, right outside the gate of my villa. His rage was so intense that she fled in fear.Later, Eve told me that Grimm Co. had rejected her resignation letter and asked her to remain as Chase's aide-de-camp.Eve refused and left anyway. She also mentioned that Imogen had been transferred to another department, while a young man had taken over as Chase's secretary."So, are you going to forgive him now?" she asked."What? Are you daft?" I snorted. "He could have done this a year ago. Maybe I might have forgiven him then. But now? It's too late. I don't have a habit of settling for sloppy seconds."My villa soon became a beacon for Paul and Karoline's attention. At first, they tried to loiter nearby, pretending discretion while their eyes searched greedily for any glimpse of my baby. Before long, they

I fed Mackin. The housekeeper helped him burp, then laid him in his cot while I headed downstairs.Paul and Karoline had apparently been pacing the living room the entire time.Chase jumped to his feet and grabbed my hand. "What is going on, Greta?!""What?" I shot back."The baby! How did you end up with a baby?!" Chase asked, frantic."I told you. He isn't yours. I had him with another man while we were still married. It's none of your business.""Enough!" Karoline snarled. Her gaze stayed fixed on Mackin's room. "He's Chase's son! I knew it the moment I heard him cry. It's unmistakable!""Wow," I said dryly. "Those are some super ears, Mom. Faster and more accurate than DNA tests. When are you joining the Avengers?"Karoline was too agitated to respond. "I want to see him. I want to see the baby. Just one glance.""One glance is fine," I replied flatly. "But don't startle him with that behavior."The three of them sprinted upstairs with the speed and coordination of Olympi

I made a point of stopping by the Grimm residence before returning to the villa. Some of my belongings were still in my old room.Chase was having lunch with his parents when I arrived. I saw them the moment I opened the door. All four of them were laughing merrily, like the happiest family in the world. Imogen had taken my seat and was telling a joke to my mother-in-law.Well, Imogen clearly fancied herself the mistress of the house.Everyone at the table froze when they noticed me. Imogen's and Karoline's smiles stiffened. Chase sprang to his feet, looking like a man caught hiding a stray cat in his bedroom.Paul alone showed no reaction. That came as no surprise. He was a shortsighted old man who stubbornly refused to wear his glasses. Half the time, he barely knew what he was looking at. I would not have been surprised if he struck up a conversation with a tree just because the trunk looked shapely from afar. When he finally realized it was me, he shot me a look filled with si

I turned to Karoline, who looked thoroughly bemused. "I had some friends in the company teach her a brief lesson for trying to seduce someone else's husband. You would think that was fair. Except your son came rushing home in a rage. He started smashing everything in the house like a rabid gorilla."The best part? Everything he destroyed was a souvenir or memento from our marriage. Was that a coincidence, or was he desperate to send me a message?"You would not stay calm if you were in my shoes. That little fib I told earlier was enough to make you want to punch Dad. Now imagine your son doing something far worse. You cannot seriously tell me to forgive him for this."Karoline grimaced. Her face sagged, as though the weight of the revelation pressed down on every muscle. For reasons I still could not comprehend, Chase refused to agree to a divorce, even after I had, quite frankly, smashed something against his head. "Greta, please listen to me. I know I've made mistakes, but I swea
