The dinner ended on a celebratory note but the ride home was uncomfortably quiet. One of the Johnsons' drivers had been assigned to take us back, and the only sounds filling the car were the soft hum of the engine and the occasional turn signal.

My mother sat beside me, her posture tense, hands clasped tightly in her lap as she stared blankly out the window. I glanced at her a few times, hoping she’d say something, but she didn’t. Not even when the driver politely announced that we’d arrived. “Thank you,” I murmured to him as I stepped out. I walked around to help my mother out of the car, and she gave a stiff nod before heading toward the house without a word.

Inside, the familiar scent of old pine wood and lemon polish welcomed us. The hallway lamp cast a warm, golden hue across the furniture. I slipped off my shoes and moved quietly into the living room where my father was resting on the couch, reading his old leather-bound Bible. His glasses sat low on his nose, his brows raised as he looked up and smiled.

“Sweetheart,” he said, closing the book gently. “You’re home, how did it go?”

I sank into the couch beside him and sighed. “It was...interesting.”

Dad chuckled lightly, then coughed, a dry, persistent sound that made my chest tighten. “Interesting… tell me more”

I folded one leg under me and leaned back. “You know how people say a lot without actually saying anything?” He nodded, already sensing there was more beneath my words.

“Tonight felt like that, everyone was polite, too polite. Frey’s mom was warm and welcoming. His Dad… well, he was intense.”

“Intense?” father asked

“Yeah. He’s got this commanding presence. The kind of man who expects the world to bend to him, but it wasn’t just that. It was the way he looked at me…Like I reminded him of something. Something he hadn’t seen in a long time.”

Dad’s gaze narrowed, lips pursing slightly. “Reminded him of what, do you think?”

“I honestly don’t know. And then…” I hesitated. “There was this moment when he saw Mom and they both froze. I swear, it was like something passed between them that no one else could see. and for a few seconds… she was completely shaken.”

My father removed his glasses and placed them on the side table. “Did she say anything afterwards?”

“Well just a, ‘you haven’t changed much.’ But the way she said it… It didn’t sound like a casual comment. It sounded like history.”

He stared ahead, silent for a moment, then spoke, “She had never mentioned knowing Tyler Johnson before”

“It was strange to me as well” I replied.

His jaw clenched. “Your mother had a life, so did I before we met each other. But I never imagined it crossed paths with the Johnsons.”

I exhaled. “I don’t mean to cause any trouble, but I think she’s hiding.”

He looked at me, a quiet storm behind his eyes. “And I take it as you want to find out what it is?”

“If there’s anything, then I have to. This marriage… I don’t want to bear more burden than necessary.”

He took my hand in his, his voice low. “Be careful, Cat. Whatever it could be, I’m sure it’s not as deep as you’re taking it.”

Just then, the sound of a glass clinking echoed from the kitchen. I turned to see my mother standing in the doorway. Our eyes met, and hers flickered just for a second. Then she turned away and headed straight to her bedroom. I got up slowly and followed her.

I walked in quietly and stood at the threshold, clutching the doorframe as if it would steady me. The soft rustle of her nightgown met my ears as she moved about the room. She had already removed her jewellery and was brushing her hair at the vanity like it was just another night, but it wasn’t and we both knew it.

“I need to ask you something,” I said, my voice firmer than I expected. I stepped into the room, shutting the door behind me.

Her brush paused mid-stroke, but she didn’t look at me. “Can it wait until morning, Catherine? It’s been a long day.”

“No,” I replied, crossing my arms tightly. “It really can’t.”

She sighed and set the brush down, her reflection in the mirror unreadable. “Then ask.”

“That moment at the Johnsons’,” I began, heart pounding. “When Frey’s father, Tyler, walked in. I saw your face, you froze, and you couldn’t even look away. And he…” I swallowed. “He looked like he had seen a ghost.”

She finally turned to face me, her eyes carefully neutral. “You’re reading too much into it. I was just surprised. That’s all.”

“That’s all?” I stepped closer, letting my voice rise just slightly. “Because it didn’t look like just surprise. It looked like there was more to it and not the good kind. What was it about?”

Her lips pursed as she walked past me, heading for the window. She pulled the curtain aside, staring out into the moonlit garden. “Tyler Johnson and I… we knew each other. A long time ago.”

I waited, but she didn’t continue. “Mother,” I said, my voice softer now. “Tell me the truth.”

She didn’t turn around. “This truth isn’t as necessary as you think it is, Catherine. The past is… complicated. And sometimes, they’re best left buried.”

“Don’t do that,” I whispered, anger creeping in. “Don’t treat me like a child who can’t handle a few buried memories. I’m your daughter. If there’s something I need to know, something that connects you to that family then I deserve to hear it.”

She finally turned back, and there was something distant in her gaze, something almost haunted. “It was before I met your father,” she said slowly. “I was young... foolish, maybe. Tyler and I crossed paths in Pensacola. It wasn’t serious, not to him, at least, but to me, it felt like a dream.” Her voice wavered. “But the thing with dreams is you wake up. He left without warning and without a goodbye.”

My breath hitched. “You were in love with him. I guess we share that in common, falling in love with a Johnson” I muttered, reducing my pitch.

“I don’t know what it was,” she replied bitterly. “Infatuation? Desperation? I was just a girl trying to escape a stifling home, and he… he was magnetic. Wealthy, charming and dangerous in all the ways a girl shouldn’t want.”

“And then you met Dad.”

“Yes.” Her eyes softened. “And your father was the opposite of everything Tyler was. He was safe, and steady. He gave me a life I could count on, the life I needed.”

I sat on the edge of her bed, trying to process everything. My head felt too full, but my heart… it just ached.

“Did you ever tell Dad?”

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “It never seemed necessary. Tyler and I were a closed chapter… until tonight.”

A thick silence fell between us. I watched her closely. “So there was something… uhm”

“Usually men like him don’t remember the girls they leave behind. Not unless they have a reason to.” Her gaze turned toward the floor. “But he remembered me tonight, didn’t he?”

I nodded slowly. “He did.”

She inhaled sharply, as though bracing herself for a wave only she could see. “Then maybe the past isn’t as buried as I hoped.” My voice trembled as I asked the next question. “Is there… is there anything else I should know?”

She glanced up, meeting my eyes with a guarded expression. “There are things, Catherine, that don’t need to be disturbed. Skeletons that belong to graves, not conversations. For now, let this be enough.”

I didn’t know if I could, but something in her tone told me to stop. Not because she didn’t want to tell me, but because she wasn’t ready.

Still, the knot in my chest had only tightened. “Fine,” I whispered, rising to my feet. “But someday, I’ll want the full story.” Her eyes glistened, but she nodded. “And someday, you might be ready to hear it.”

I left her room with more questions than answers, my steps quiet against the hallway floor. The house was dark, but my mind was lit up with confusion and speculation.

The next morning, I dressed carefully, soft cream blouse, tailored slacks, and my hair pinned back. I looked the part, even if I felt like a stranger inside the costume. Frey barely said two words as we stepped out together for a charity breakfast with the city’s elite. He smiled when the cameras appeared, gripped my waist like it was scripted, but the tension in his jaw gave away the lie.As we walked down the red carpet of the hotel lobby, reporters called our names, flashing bulbs catching the glitter of my earrings. One reporter shouted, “You look radiant, Catherine! What’s your favourite thing about Frey?”I glanced sideways at him. He didn’t return the look. His smile was already aimed at another camera. So I smiled too and answered, “He knows how to make silence feel comfortable.” But that was a lie.Later that afternoon, I sat alone in the dressing room, rehearsing my lines for the next media appearance at a dinner the next night, the biggest one yet, and I was going to be the

POV: CatherineWith barely any time to spare, the demands of playing soon to be CEO’s wife started to line up. Business meetings, dinners, and congresses, everywhere Frey went, I had to follow. Our wedding preparations was in full swing alongside. This I was looking forward to, I needed the first $10 million pay like my life depended on it, because it did. And not just mine but my entire family’s life as well.We had our weddings photographs taken earlier and the gown was returned in a garment bag like it had never existed, no proof left of the way it clung to me like a warning, how it shimmered beneath studio lights like it was made from truth polished into glass. I stared at the bag lying on the couch in Frey’s private residence where I had been staying, its elegance now seemingly mocking. The silence in the room pressed down on me, a suffocating thing that pooled in corners and echoed off marble. Frey was seated on the far end of the dining table, scrolling through his phone. The f

The music hit like a riot in my chest, pulsing and relentless. A heavy rhythm of bass and light that made everything else blur into meaningless movement. The sound waves circulating in an endless loop transcended every being into realms they couldn’t recognise, making them lose touch with their senses.Inside Havana Lounge was alive, bodies packed tight, drenched in sweat and perfume. Neon-blue strobes carved through the smoke like starlight, flashing over laughing mouths and glassy eyes. It wasn’t a place for thought; it was a place for forgetting, and that was exactly why I was there.Javier slapped my back, his grin far too wide as he shouted something I couldn’t hear over the music. I didn’t bother asking him to repeat it. I just raised my glass and downed the rest of the tequila in one breath, it scorched my throa,t but the fire helped.Another round appeared within minutes, handed to me by pretty blonde in a silver dress, her fingers brushing mine longer than necessary, her soft

Frey’s POV | Chicago, EveningLater that evening, after the meeting with the board I called Catherine to meet me. It rained all day, although it had subsided, the streets still shimmered like wet glass, mirroring the glow of streetlights and the weight I carried behind the wheel. The city hummed around me, honks, passing sirens, voices swallowed by distance, but inside the car, everything was still.Catherine sat in the passenger seat beside me, arms folded tightly over her coat, the tip of her nose red from the cold. She hadn’t said much since she stepped in. Just looked ahead like she was bracing for bad news.I tapped the steering wheel, trying to find the right words. “The board meeting happened this afternoon.”She glanced at me. “And?”I exhaled. “They want me to take over. They practically handed me the seat”“Then what?” she asked hurriedly“Then my father decided to drop the hammer,” I answered.“He refused?” she asked again with vested curiosity.“Absolutely. He said I haven

Frey’s POV | Johnson Group Headquarters – Executive BoardroomThe elevator ride to the 48th floor was silent, but I could feel the weight in the air, thick and suffocating like the storm clouds brewing outside the glass skyscraper. Rain lashed against the tall windows, streaking down like nature’s version of sweat. A storm was raging outside, and an even bigger one was brewing inside.I stepped into the boardroom, and every pair of eyes turned to me: grey suits, dark ties, glinting cufflinks. Twelve men and women who had once answered to my father without blinking were now staring at me as if my shadow already belonged in that chair at the head of the table.Except I wasn’t sitting in that chair, not yet. It was still my father’s, and he sat in it. He was propped upright, pale under the collar, an oxygen aid discreetly clipped under his nose; he looked like a ghost of the man who once walked into this room like he owned gravity. But his eyes, those eyes, were still steel; he wasn’t le

Catherine’s POV | Rhodes Residence, ChicagoThe rain had started just before noon, light at first, a misty drizzle veiling the windows like breath on glass. By the time I reached home, it had thickened into a steady curtain, the kind that blurred the streets and soaked through to the soul.I stepped out of the car and into the chill, the hem of my dress clinging to my legs as I hurried up the porch steps. One of the Johnson drivers gave a curt nod before pulling away, leaving me in the fading drone of rainfall and the tight ache in my chest that hadn’t left since Frey’s call. The door creaked as I pushed it open. The scent of jasmine tea and furniture polish met me like a familiar memory as I stepped inside. My mother sat in the living room, carefully folding laundry with tired fingers. Dad was in his recliner, covered in a light blanket, his face pale but peaceful in sleep.Vanessa looked up immediately, concern tightening the corners of her mouth. “You’re home early. Is everything ok
