By the time the livestream started, I had already turned the car around.

In the distance, I spotted my frail mother-in-law, Barbara Hamilton, huddled on the highway shoulder. Her gray hair was disheveled, and as cars roared past, she wrapped her arms tightly around herself and shivered.

I rolled down the window and glared at her. "God, you're so annoying! You took forever. You deserved to be left behind!"

Barbara jerked her head up at the sound of my voice. She had no idea I'd secretly started a livestream on my spare phone. Her face was full of fear and guilt.

"Jules, I was wrong... I'm sorry… I won't do it again, I promise. Please don't leave me behind... It's so dark, and I'm scared..."

Instead of easing up, I became even harsher. "What are you dawdling for? Get in the car! If we miss the parade, I'll beat the hell out of you!"

Barbara flinched and hurried to open the rear door.

In her panic, she caught her foot on the door frame and fell heavily to the ground.

"Ow! Jules, that really hurt!" She groaned in pain, her forehead striking the concrete. Blood immediately began to seep from the wound.

I didn't move an inch.

The livestream chat exploded.

"Holy shit! Is this woman even human? She's completely heartless!"

"The old lady fell that hard, and she won't even help her up?!"

"She's lucky she got stuck with an easygoing country woman like that. If she had a tough Southern mother-in-law like me, she'd have gotten slapped across the face already!"

In the passenger seat, my mother, Astrid Baldwin, yawned and urged me impatiently, "Get out and help her up. The Thanksgiving parade is about to start."

"Can't be bothered." I didn't even lift my eyelids. "She's a useless old hag. If she falls and dies, all the better. One less retirement expense to worry about."

My mom nodded and went back to playing on her phone.

"Oh, right. Jack and his family are already waiting at the entrance to the scenic area. They're waiting for you to buy their tickets!"

"Tickets are $39.9 per person. I'm certainly not making my precious son pay out of his own pocket. Transfer him the money now."

"Got it." I opened my phone without hesitation and sent my younger brother, Jack, a $200 cash gift.

"Only $200?" My mom frowned. "That's not enough! Jack's mortgage alone is $800 a month, and he needs another $200 for cigarettes. Send him another $1000."

"Mom..." I hesitated. "I just replaced his car with a BMW last month. I don't have much left in my bank account..."

"You're such an idiot!" My mom smacked me on the forehead. "Just transfer the money from Barbara's account! Doesn't she give you $1000 every month anyway? Use some of it to help Jack!"

I nodded repeatedly, took out Barbara's account details, and tossed them to my mom. "You do it yourself. Transfer however much you want."

Satisfied, my mom took the card and began operating the phone with practiced ease.

By then, Barbara had finally managed to climb into the back seat, panting for breath. Her forehead was covered in blood, yet she didn't complain. Instead, she carefully pulled a squashed sandwich out of her backpack.

"Jules, are you hungry?" she asked with a vacant smile, her eyes full of pleading affection. "I... I saved this for you... Eat it..."

I glanced at the sandwich and tossed it out the window in disgust. "It's just a crappy sandwich. Even a dog wouldn't eat it!"

Barbara's hand froze in midair. A flicker of sadness crossed her eyes, but it quickly gave way to self-blame. "Right, right... It's a lousy sandwich... I'm useless..."

The livestream comments spiraled out of control.

"What the hell! Is this woman even human?!"

"She treats her bloodsucking mother like royalty, but treats the mother-in-law who supports her so generously like an enemy!"

"This piece of trash doesn't deserve to be anyone's wife! Whoever marries her is doomed!"

I glanced at the comments and started the car, my expression blank.

In the rearview mirror, Barbara sat curled up in the back seat, staring out the window with vacant eyes.

No one noticed that my hands were gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles had turned white.

"Dr. Lewis's grandson was almost kidnapped right outside the hospital. I risked my life to pull him out of the traffickers' van. Overcome with guilt, Dr. Lewis finally admitted the truth and agreed to testify in court!"I turned a piercing gaze on Barbara."Besides the kidney swap, Dr. Lewis also submitted surveillance footage and audio recordings proving that you've spent years pretending to have dementia while stealing children near the hospital."We have both witnesses and physical evidence! You're not getting away this time!"Barbara finally lost control. She shrieked like a madwoman and lunged at me, trying to snatch the USB drive.Several officers quickly restrained her."Barbara Hamilton, you're suspected of child trafficking and intentional assault. You're coming with us."She struggled and screamed, "I'm not going! I didn't do anything! She's framing me!"Scott slumped to the floor, looking as though his soul had been ripped out of his body."Scott Hamilton, you're su

My voice grew louder. "The children you trafficked have mothers too! When you killed my dad, did you ever think about the fact that he had a daughter?"Barbara was silent for a few seconds. Then she suddenly laughed. The laughter was sinister and terrifying. There wasn't a trace of dementia left in her expression."No wonder you married into our family..." She slowly raised her head, her eyes clear and sharp. "So it was all to investigate what happened to your father. Finally, you've dropped the act."But Barbara abruptly changed her tune. "Sweetheart, your dad's car accident was just that—an accident. I had nothing to do with it. Have you misunderstood something?"She began dodging the question again, wearing such an earnest expression that she seemed genuinely misunderstood. The livestream viewers hesitated."Maybe the car accident really was just an accident...""Does she have any hard evidence?"I took out my phone and opened an encrypted folder. "I do."The screen filled

I stood up and walked to the hospital room door. Then I pulled a yellowed notebook from my pocket.Barbara and Scott's expressions changed dramatically."No!" Barbara screamed and lunged toward me, trying to snatch it away.Scott rushed forward too. "Julianna, what the hell are you doing?!"I quickly slipped into the hallway and locked the door behind me.Holding the notebook up, I began speaking to the camera. "I found this diary under Barbara's bed."I opened it to the first page. It was densely filled with entries—dates, locations, names, and prices."This records thirty years of her..." I paused, my voice trembling. "It documents the trafficking of 389 children."The livestream fell instantly silent. One second. Two seconds. Three...Then the comments erupted."What does that mean?""That demented mother-in-law is a child trafficker?!""No way...""Is this fake?"Inside the room, Barbara pounded frantically on the door and screamed, "Julianna! What the hell are you t

Barbara, who was lying on the stretcher, suddenly opened her eyes. She struggled to sit up. The paramedic hurried to help her, but she pushed him away.Staggering off the stretcher, she suddenly lost strength in her legs and dropped to her knees with a thud."Son! Put down the stick! This isn't Jules's fault! It's all because my dementia acted up again… Please, everyone, stop pressuring my daughter-in-law..."She smashed her forehead against the floor. Blood pooled beneath her. "I'm useless... If you need someone to blame, blame me..."Her pitiful, utterly submissive appearance brought tears to everyone's eyes.Knox wiped his tears and spoke to the camera, his voice choked with emotion. "Can you believe what you're seeing? This elderly woman donated a kidney to her daughter-in-law, and now she's kneeling on the floor, apologizing to her!"He turned toward me, his voice trembling. "Julianna, your mother-in-law gave you a kidney! Why are you so hostile toward her?!"What did she

The next second, the door was suddenly kicked open.Several young people rushed inside. Leading them was a green-haired influencer named Knox Moran, holding a selfie stick, with a cameraman following close behind."This is the place!" Knox pointed at me. "You're Julianna Baldwin, right? We came here from your livestream! Your mother-in-law is in this condition. Why haven't you taken her to the hospital?!"I looked up at him, my expression blank. "What's it got to do with you?"Knox turned red with anger. "You're committing murder! Do you even understand that?!"He went over to Barbara and crouched beside her. When he reached out to feel her forehead, he sucked in a sharp breath. "Jesus! She's burning up like a furnace! Someone call an ambulance!"His female assistant already had tears in her eyes as she shakily dialed 911.I remained seated on the couch, calmly sipping my coffee."You..." Knox pointed at me, too furious to finish his sentence. "Your mother-in-law donated a kidn

Barbara was shivering violently from the cold, trying desperately to burrow into the couch. My mom covered her nose and waved her hand in disgust. "You're filthy! You absolutely reek!"I walked over, yanked Barbara off the couch, and threw her onto the floor. "You're sleeping on the floor."She hit the ground hard with a dull thud.A vicious glint flashed in her eyes, but it quickly vanished, replaced by that vacant, foolish smile. "The floor is nice... The floor is cool... I can sleep on the floor..."The livestream chat had completely lost control."She spent the whole night freezing in a dumpster, and now you're making her sleep on the floor?!""This woman really has no heart!""I seriously can't watch this anymore..."I ignored them completely. With a sharp click, I turned off the lights and went to sleep.By eight the next morning, the sky was already bright.Barbara had developed a fever. Her forehead was burning hot, her face was flushed red, and her coughing was so v
