Chapter 2

Author: Rich Retiree
It was finally ten o'clock at night when we reached the scenic area.

Jack, was standing at the entrance with his three-year-old son in his arms. His wife, Malia, clutched an LV bag and held tightly to his arm.

The moment he saw me, he raised his wrist and flashed his Rolex. "You're finally here, sis! We've been waiting for half an hour. Still haven't got the tickets?"

"I'm buying them now."

I parked the car and hurried to the ticket booth.

"Five tickets at $39.9 each," I said, pulling out my phone to scan the payment code.

The ticket seller nodded and handed me five tickets.

I took them and distributed them among my mom, Jack, Malia, and my nephew, Huxley.

"Wait a minute," someone commented in the livestream. "Five tickets? What about her mother-in-law?"

"Holy shit, she's not even buying the old lady a ticket?"

"Can she really be that cruel?!"

Barbara stood at the entrance, staring at us in confusion. The blood on her forehead hadn't been wiped away, and her clothes were filthy. She looked completely out of place among the well-dressed visitors around her.

I turned and looked at her coldly. "You stupid old hag, don't even think about going inside. A ticket costs $39.9. I'd be better off feeding that money to a dog than wasting it on you."

Barbara trembled, but quickly forced a fawning smile onto her face. "That's right... I'm not even as good as a dog... I'll wait outside for you... I won't go in..."

She huddled in a corner near the entrance, clutching the hem of her clothes with both hands like a child who had done something wrong.

The livestream comments flew by.

"I swear to God, I want to slap this bitch ten times across the face!"

"Her mother-in-law contributed $120 thousand toward the down payment when they got married, and now she doesn't even deserve to see the Thanksgiving parade?"

"If she were my mother-in-law, I'd be treating her like a queen every single day!"

Suddenly, a comment appeared in the chat.

The profile picture belonged to my husband, Scott Hamilton. He posted more than a dozen angry emojis in a row.

"Julianna Baldwin, you're going way too far!"

"When we bought the house after getting married, the $100 thousand down payment came from the compensation my dad's family received after his fatal car accident. My mom handed over every last cent without a second thought."

"Now she has dementia, and she doesn't even deserve to see a Thanksgiving parade? Do you have a conscience at all?!"

The comments were instantly flooded with words like "beast" and "inhuman."

I glanced at my phone indifferently, then turned and walked into the scenic area. The parade grounds were dazzling, with elaborate floats and colorful decorations illuminating the night.

My mom excitedly dragged Jack and his family around, taking picture after picture.

I trailed behind them, carrying bags and bags of their things. I was so exhausted I could barely catch my breath, and sweat soaked through the back of my shirt.

"Jules, go buy us two hot dogs!" Jack ordered without even turning around.

"Sure." I hurried to the food stall.

"Jules, I'm thirsty. Get me a bottle of water!"

"Sure."

"Hey, the baby wants cotton candy!"

"Sure."

I ran around them like a servant.

All the while, my mom had eyes only for her precious son and his family. She didn't spare me a single glance.

Suddenly, I stumbled and accidentally stepped on Jack's Air Jordan sneaker.

Smack!

My mom slapped me hard across the face. "Watch where you're going! Do you have any idea how much these shoes cost? If you ruin them, can you even afford to pay for them?!"

I clutched my face. My ears rang, and my vision blurred. My body lost its balance, and I began to fall.

Suddenly, a pair of bony hands caught me from behind.

Thud!

Barbara hit the ground on her knees. She sucked in a sharp breath from the pain, but her arms remained wrapped tightly around me, shielding me from the fall.

Her pants tore on impact, exposing a deep wound that went almost to the bone. Blood poured from it.

"Jules, are you okay? You scared me to death..."

The livestream chat filled with comments again.

"I'm crying..."

"That old lady is far too kind!"

"Divorce this ungrateful snake already! She doesn't deserve a mother-in-law this good!"

I froze for a second, then pushed Barbara away in disgust and smoothed out the wrinkles in my clothes.

My mom didn't even look at me after my fall. She was still holding up her phone. "Come on, Jack! Stand in front of that big float. I'm going to record a video and post it on my social media!"

Barbara struggled to her feet. Her entire pant leg was stained red with blood, yet she seemed completely unaware of it. Her eyes were fixed on my elbow.

There was only a minor scrape there.

"Jules, you're bleeding..."

With trembling hands, she pulled an old handkerchief from her pocket and carefully wiped the wound.

"I... I will blow on it for you... There, there. It won't hurt anymore..."

I lowered my eyes to look at her, a complicated emotion flickering in my gaze. But a moment later, my expression turned cold again.

"Dr. Lewis's grandson was almost kidnapped right outside the hospital. I risked my life to pull him out of the traffickers' van. Overcome with guilt, Dr. Lewis finally admitted the truth and agreed to testify in court!"I turned a piercing gaze on Barbara."Besides the kidney swap, Dr. Lewis also submitted surveillance footage and audio recordings proving that you've spent years pretending to have dementia while stealing children near the hospital."We have both witnesses and physical evidence! You're not getting away this time!"Barbara finally lost control. She shrieked like a madwoman and lunged at me, trying to snatch the USB drive.Several officers quickly restrained her."Barbara Hamilton, you're suspected of child trafficking and intentional assault. You're coming with us."She struggled and screamed, "I'm not going! I didn't do anything! She's framing me!"Scott slumped to the floor, looking as though his soul had been ripped out of his body."Scott Hamilton, you're su

My voice grew louder. "The children you trafficked have mothers too! When you killed my dad, did you ever think about the fact that he had a daughter?"Barbara was silent for a few seconds. Then she suddenly laughed. The laughter was sinister and terrifying. There wasn't a trace of dementia left in her expression."No wonder you married into our family..." She slowly raised her head, her eyes clear and sharp. "So it was all to investigate what happened to your father. Finally, you've dropped the act."But Barbara abruptly changed her tune. "Sweetheart, your dad's car accident was just that—an accident. I had nothing to do with it. Have you misunderstood something?"She began dodging the question again, wearing such an earnest expression that she seemed genuinely misunderstood. The livestream viewers hesitated."Maybe the car accident really was just an accident...""Does she have any hard evidence?"I took out my phone and opened an encrypted folder. "I do."The screen filled

I stood up and walked to the hospital room door. Then I pulled a yellowed notebook from my pocket.Barbara and Scott's expressions changed dramatically."No!" Barbara screamed and lunged toward me, trying to snatch it away.Scott rushed forward too. "Julianna, what the hell are you doing?!"I quickly slipped into the hallway and locked the door behind me.Holding the notebook up, I began speaking to the camera. "I found this diary under Barbara's bed."I opened it to the first page. It was densely filled with entries—dates, locations, names, and prices."This records thirty years of her..." I paused, my voice trembling. "It documents the trafficking of 389 children."The livestream fell instantly silent. One second. Two seconds. Three...Then the comments erupted."What does that mean?""That demented mother-in-law is a child trafficker?!""No way...""Is this fake?"Inside the room, Barbara pounded frantically on the door and screamed, "Julianna! Barbara, who was lying on the stretcher, suddenly opened her eyes. She struggled to sit up. The paramedic hurried to help her, but she pushed him away.Staggering off the stretcher, she suddenly lost strength in her legs and dropped to her knees with a thud."Son! Put down the stick! This isn't Jules's fault! It's all because my dementia acted up again… Please, everyone, stop pressuring my daughter-in-law..."She smashed her forehead against the floor. Blood pooled beneath her. "I'm useless... If you need someone to blame, blame me..."Her pitiful, utterly submissive appearance brought tears to everyone's eyes.Knox wiped his tears and spoke to the camera, his voice choked with emotion. "Can you believe what you're seeing? This elderly woman donated a kidney to her daughter-in-law, and now she's kneeling on the floor, apologizing to her!"He turned toward me, his voice trembling. "Julianna, your mother-in-law gave you a kidney! Why are you so hostile toward her?!"What did she

The next second, the door was suddenly kicked open.Several young people rushed inside. Leading them was a green-haired influencer named Knox Moran, holding a selfie stick, with a cameraman following close behind."This is the place!" Knox pointed at me. "You're Julianna Baldwin, right? We came here from your livestream! Your mother-in-law is in this condition. Why haven't you taken her to the hospital?!"I looked up at him, my expression blank. "What's it got to do with you?"Knox turned red with anger. "You're committing murder! Do you even understand that?!"He went over to Barbara and crouched beside her. When he reached out to feel her forehead, he sucked in a sharp breath. "Jesus! She's burning up like a furnace! Someone call an ambulance!"His female assistant already had tears in her eyes as she shakily dialed 911.I remained seated on the couch, calmly sipping my coffee."You..." Knox pointed at me, too furious to finish his sentence. "Your mother-in-law donated a kidn

Barbara was shivering violently from the cold, trying desperately to burrow into the couch. My mom covered her nose and waved her hand in disgust. "You're filthy! You absolutely reek!"I walked over, yanked Barbara off the couch, and threw her onto the floor. "You're sleeping on the floor."She hit the ground hard with a dull thud.A vicious glint flashed in her eyes, but it quickly vanished, replaced by that vacant, foolish smile. "The floor is nice... The floor is cool... I can sleep on the floor..."The livestream chat had completely lost control."She spent the whole night freezing in a dumpster, and now you're making her sleep on the floor?!""This woman really has no heart!""I seriously can't watch this anymore..."I ignored them completely. With a sharp click, I turned off the lights and went to sleep.By eight the next morning, the sky was already bright.Barbara had developed a fever. Her forehead was burning hot, her face was flushed red, and her coughing was so v
