Chapter 3

Author: Rich Retiree
"Don't be so dramatic!" My mom scoffed contemptuously. "It's barely even a scratch!

"This girl used to get beaten up by her little brother until she was crawling around on the ground. What's a little scrape compared to that?"

My usually timid mother-in-law suddenly turned around. A flash of anger flickered in her cloudy eyes. "Don't you dare talk about my Jules like that!"

Everyone stared at her, wide-eyed.

Then she turned back to me and smiled vacantly. "I will blow on it for you, Jules. There, there. It won't hurt anymore..."

She leaned closer to my elbow and gently blew on the scrape, soothing me as if I were a little child.

The livestream chat erupted.

"Oh my God... Her own knees are bleeding, and she's still only worried about someone else's tiny scratch..."

"Ungrateful witch! Doesn't your conscience hurt at all?!"

I lowered my eyes to look at Barbara. Her pant leg was soaked through with blood, and her whole body was hunched over. She looked utterly miserable.

Yet I raised my hand and shoved her away hard. "You stupid idiot! How dare you snap at my mom! Do you want me to slap you?!"

Barbara staggered from the shove and nearly fell. She hurriedly grabbed the railing beside her, staring at me in terror.

"I'm sorry. I was wrong. I shouldn't have snapped at anyone..." She had reverted to her usual meek, fawning self.

The livestream chat filled with furious insults.

"Holy shit! She's so blind and stupidly devoted to her own mother, even when she's being abused!"

"Her mother-in-law just saved her, and she can't even say thank you! Her own mom treats her like garbage, and she still desperately crawls back to worship her!"

"Someone like this deserves divine punishment!"

Another comment from Scott appeared in the chat. This time, he posted several question marks in a row.

"Julianna, my mom saved you. Can't you even thank her? You weren't like this before... What the hell has happened to you?"

I sneered. "You'll find out after tonight."

"What do you mean?" Scott replied instantly. "Julianna, explain yourself!"

I didn't respond. I simply kept my eyes on the screen.

The viewers in the livestream had also begun to sense that something was off.

"What does she mean by that? Is there going to be a twist?"

"I think she's just putting on a show for attention."

I put my phone away and looked toward Barbara in the distance. She was crouching on the ground, one hand gripping the railing and the other covering her bleeding knee. She murmured to herself, "I'm fine... I'm tough... I just worry about you, Jules..."

I stared at her, the corners of my mouth curling into a cold sneer.

Almost there!

It would all be over very soon!

"Dr. Lewis's grandson was almost kidnapped right outside the hospital. I risked my life to pull him out of the traffickers' van. Overcome with guilt, Dr. Lewis finally admitted the truth and agreed to testify in court!"I turned a piercing gaze on Barbara."Besides the kidney swap, Dr. Lewis also submitted surveillance footage and audio recordings proving that you've spent years pretending to have dementia while stealing children near the hospital."We have both witnesses and physical evidence! You're not getting away this time!"Barbara finally lost control. She shrieked like a madwoman and lunged at me, trying to snatch the USB drive.Several officers quickly restrained her."Barbara Hamilton, you're suspected of child trafficking and intentional assault. You're coming with us."She struggled and screamed, "I'm not going! I didn't do anything! She's framing me!"Scott slumped to the floor, looking as though his soul had been ripped out of his body."Scott Hamilton, you're su

My voice grew louder. "The children you trafficked have mothers too! When you killed my dad, did you ever think about the fact that he had a daughter?"Barbara was silent for a few seconds. Then she suddenly laughed. The laughter was sinister and terrifying. There wasn't a trace of dementia left in her expression."No wonder you married into our family..." She slowly raised her head, her eyes clear and sharp. "So it was all to investigate what happened to your father. Finally, you've dropped the act."But Barbara abruptly changed her tune. "Sweetheart, your dad's car accident was just that—an accident. I had nothing to do with it. Have you misunderstood something?"She began dodging the question again, wearing such an earnest expression that she seemed genuinely misunderstood. The livestream viewers hesitated."Maybe the car accident really was just an accident...""Does she have any hard evidence?"I took out my phone and opened an encrypted folder. "I do."The screen filled

I stood up and walked to the hospital room door. Then I pulled a yellowed notebook from my pocket.Barbara and Scott's expressions changed dramatically."No!" Barbara screamed and lunged toward me, trying to snatch it away.Scott rushed forward too. "Julianna, what the hell are you doing?!"I quickly slipped into the hallway and locked the door behind me.Holding the notebook up, I began speaking to the camera. "I found this diary under Barbara's bed."I opened it to the first page. It was densely filled with entries—dates, locations, names, and prices."This records thirty years of her..." I paused, my voice trembling. "It documents the trafficking of 389 children."The livestream fell instantly silent. One second. Two seconds. Three...Then the comments erupted."What does that mean?""That demented mother-in-law is a child trafficker?!""No way...""Is this fake?"Inside the room, Barbara pounded frantically on the door and screamed, "Julianna! What the hell are you t

Barbara, who was lying on the stretcher, suddenly opened her eyes. She struggled to sit up. The paramedic hurried to help her, but she pushed him away.Staggering off the stretcher, she suddenly lost strength in her legs and dropped to her knees with a thud."Son! Put down the stick! This isn't Jules's fault! It's all because my dementia acted up again… Please, everyone, stop pressuring my daughter-in-law..."She smashed her forehead against the floor. Blood pooled beneath her. "I'm useless... If you need someone to blame, blame me..."Her pitiful, utterly submissive appearance brought tears to everyone's eyes.Knox wiped his tears and spoke to the camera, his voice choked with emotion. "Can you believe what you're seeing? This elderly woman donated a kidney to her daughter-in-law, and now she's kneeling on the floor, apologizing to her!"He turned toward me, his voice trembling. "Julianna, your mother-in-law gave you a kidney! Why are you so hostile toward her?!"What did she

The next second, the door was suddenly kicked open.Several young people rushed inside. Leading them was a green-haired influencer named Knox Moran, holding a selfie stick, with a cameraman following close behind."This is the place!" Knox pointed at me. "You're Julianna Baldwin, right? We came here from your livestream! Your mother-in-law is in this condition. Why haven't you taken her to the hospital?!"I looked up at him, my expression blank. "What's it got to do with you?"Knox turned red with anger. "You're committing murder! Do you even understand that?!"He went over to Barbara and crouched beside her. When he reached out to feel her forehead, he sucked in a sharp breath. "Jesus! She's burning up like a furnace! Someone call an ambulance!"His female assistant already had tears in her eyes as she shakily dialed 911.I remained seated on the couch, calmly sipping my coffee."You..." Knox pointed at me, too furious to finish his sentence. "Your mother-in-law donated a kidn

Barbara was shivering violently from the cold, trying desperately to burrow into the couch. My mom covered her nose and waved her hand in disgust. "You're filthy! You absolutely reek!"I walked over, yanked Barbara off the couch, and threw her onto the floor. "You're sleeping on the floor."She hit the ground hard with a dull thud.A vicious glint flashed in her eyes, but it quickly vanished, replaced by that vacant, foolish smile. "The floor is nice... The floor is cool... I can sleep on the floor..."The livestream chat had completely lost control."She spent the whole night freezing in a dumpster, and now you're making her sleep on the floor?!""This woman really has no heart!""I seriously can't watch this anymore..."I ignored them completely. With a sharp click, I turned off the lights and went to sleep.By eight the next morning, the sky was already bright.Barbara had developed a fever. Her forehead was burning hot, her face was flushed red, and her coughing was so v
