Chapter 1

Author: Centennial Brew
I stood at the entrance of the dimly lit VIP room, my phone in hand. My eyes locked on Shawn Turner as he gently traced the girl's jawline with his fingertip, like someone playing with a kitten.

The girl responded with a flirtatious giggle, acting completely docile.

They were quite the pair—one was my childhood sweetheart who had been discussing marriage with me, and the other was a struggling student I had financially supported through school.

Inside the room, several of Shawn's close friends were lounging around.

Noticing Shawn's relaxed demeanor, they teased him, "Man, Shawn, you really know how to live it up. You've got that gorgeous Rowena waiting at home, and here you are with another beauty."

"Shawn, won't Rowena flip out if she finds out about this?" one of them asked.

Shawn remained completely unfazed, merely clicking his tongue. "Rowena? Yeah, she might be a bit of a hassle, but she'll just throw a little tantrum. That's all."

His best friend, Zachary Moore, chuckled. "That's true! Rowena loves you so much. Even if she does get upset, you'll calm herself down in no time."

Shawn played with his lighter, his tone casual and dismissive as he said, "She can't live without me."

His confidence was overwhelming, and I realized I was probably the one who had given him that assurance. I glanced down at the diamond ring in my hand, the one I had planned to use to propose to him.

Suddenly, it felt meaningless. I could not help but think bitterly that the past ten years of my life would have been spent better raising a dog.

Back when we were kids, Shawn would always tell me, "Nana, we're going to get married when we grow up, so you have to stay by my side forever. Don't you ever leave me."

That single promise had kept me by his side for ten years. From 15 to 25 years old, from my first crush to my current mature self, I had revolved my life around him.

He had transformed from a jealous teenager who would get upset over love letters in my backpack to a man who now claimed he was bored with me.

However, he never realized something—I did not need him. I only needed a capable man to have a child with and carry on the Iverson family legacy.

As I turned to leave, Zachary's sharp eyes caught me. "OMG! Rowena? What are you doing here?"

That single exclamation drew everyone's attention to me.

Shawn looked at me, too, but he did not release the girl in his arms. He maintained that subtle smirk with an inexplicable certainty—sure that I would be heartbroken over him and that in this relationship, I was the one desperately seeking his approval.

I had initially planned to leave quietly, but I changed my mind when I saw the smug look on his face. I stepped into the room and walked straight to Shawn.

The young girl in his arms noticed me and timidly called out, "Rowena..."

I let my gaze linger on her for a moment before asking with feigned confusion, "And you are?"

Blair Newman froze for a moment, seemingly embarrassed. Then, she pressed herself closer to Shawn, mumbling, "Mr. Turner..."

"Just kidding. I remember you," I suddenly said with a light laugh. "You're that shameless woman I sponsored right into my boyfriend's arms."

  • A New Spring   Chapter 13

Shawn's POV.Since childhood, I had known that I had a fiancée and that I would marry her when I grew up. She was beautiful and sweet, and I loved everything about her. When we were little, she was like my shadow, always following me around. We were childhood sweethearts, and I loved how natural it felt to have her by my side.I cherished that feeling and once told her, "You have to stay with me forever and keep up with my pace!"She had promised she would. For some reason, everything changed when I started college. It was as if my world suddenly burst into color, and Rowena was no longer the only vibrant part of it. Though she still followed me everywhere, constantly weaving herself into every aspect of my life, I began to find it annoying. I was convinced she would never leave me, so I thought I could spend a few years living it up before settling down with her. However, she was too clingy. She always got upset and tried to stop me from living my single life. The more she fo

  • A New Spring   Chapter 12

Nathaniel's expression darkened as he said, "She's still a student, and since nothing's happened yet, she won't face any serious consequences."After all, Blair had not paid the guy, and the motorcyclist had not acted on her plan yet.I nodded, wrapping my arms around his waist. "But I heard she's been involved with drugs." Even if I did not push for her downfall, drug use would ruin her life once it got exposed."She's digging her own grave," Nathaniel commented coldly.I returned to browsing on my phone. We had been discussing plans for our formal wedding ceremony recently. I wanted to plan it myself, so I had been researching ideas lately. After finishing work, Nathaniel would sit beside me, wrapping his arm around me while we scrolled through inspiration together. With the date set for next month, I began to worry. "But my belly is already so big. I'm afraid I won't look good in a wedding dress."Nathaniel smiled. "I've already had two maternity wedding dresses custom-ma

  • A New Spring   Chapter 11

I interrupted Shawn, saying, "I'm not interested in anything you have to say, and don't twist the facts—you cheated first, which ended our relationship. I even posted about my marriage on social media. I never hid anything from you."Shawn's heart clenched. It was true—I had not kept it from him. Yet, until the moment he saw my pregnant belly, he had convinced himself I was just angry and that I was not actually with someone else. After all, we had known each other for so many years. So, Shawn thought their relationship couldn't just end like that. Before he could say anything more, he realized Nathaniel and I had already driven away. ...Meanwhile, Blair was called to the dean's office for the third time. Nearly a month into the semester, she still had not paid her tuition, which the dean had personally covered for her."I'm sorry, sir. Please give me more time..." Blair was desperate. She had spent heavily recently, using Shawn's allowance to pay off her debts, leaving nothin

  • A New Spring   Chapter 10

After sending that message, I blocked Blair. I did not hate her, and while her character might have been questionable, Shawn bore much of the responsibility.Ironically, their relationship had led me to Nathaniel. Now, all I wanted was to have our baby and build our love story after marriage. When Nathaniel came home that evening, I caught him eating the leftover cake I had saved. I asked, "Is it good?""Not bad," Nathaniel replied.I nodded in agreement. "I thought so, too." Nathaniel made a mental note and casually asked, "Where did you buy it?""Dr. Aicker made it," I explained. Dr. Aicker was the handsome and witty doctor Nathaniel had hired at a premium to monitor my pregnancy. He happened to enjoy baking, and Tara had been trying to catch his attention lately."It's terrible," Nathaniel suddenly declared, tossing the cake aside with a complete change in attitude. I could only stare at him in disbelief....The next day, Nathaniel and I visited my parents. They alre

  • A New Spring   Chapter 9

Nathaniel said, "That day, you stood in front of me and bravely defended me. That's when I fell for you."I was dumbfounded. I did defend him that day, as the Iversons were from a prestigious family. Besides, I was not afraid of those rich kids and their arrogant attitudes, so I stood up to them.Back then, I was simply defending "family" as Shawn's girlfriend. Then again, no one would have expected Nathaniel to have feelings for me since that moment. I snuck a glance at him. After all these years, I had never noticed. Every time we crossed paths, he was always cold and distant, buried in company files. "How did you know I was using a dating app?" I asked.Nathaniel replied matter-of-factly, "I'm connected with you on all your social platforms, including your dating apps."I was speechless, thinking that was kind of scary. Nonetheless, after learning about his feelings for me, my perspective shifted slightly.…After the fall, the doctor said my pregnancy was unstable. Hence

  • A New Spring   Chapter 8

The news of my pregnancy hit me like a bolt of lightning. As I placed my hand on my stomach, I found it hard to believe that such a flat belly was already nurturing a tiny life. Nonetheless, it made perfect sense since we had been trying for a baby since our marriage a month ago.Tara was so excited that she had already come up with 20 different names for my unborn child in the past two hours alone. That night, Nathaniel knocked on my door, bringing with him the winter chill. As soon as I opened it, he pulled me into a tight embrace. He held me so firmly as if he wanted to meld me into his very being. After the embrace, Nathaniel looked at me with a grim expression. "Didn't you promise not to go skiing? Don't you know how dangerous outdoor skiing can be? Look what happened now—this could have ended badly."I peeked up at him from his embrace, meeting his angry gaze. Feeling guilty, I assured him, "The baby is fine." "I care about you, not just the baby. Don't you feel any gu
