He picked up his glass, took two sips and set it down. "I ran a background check," He replied. "Found out all I needed to know."

"A background check?" She swallowed hard. What else did he also know about her? She thought to herself.

As if sensing her uneasiness and worry, he added. "That's all that I know about you, the rest I want to hear from you."

Ariel's gaze shifted to the file on the table. Thirty million dollars! Max's surgery would be paid for. He would go to the best school and she'd no longer have to work an underpaid job.

"Just three months?" She looked at him and nodded. "Yes, Milady, ninety three days and this charade will be over." He chewed on a piece of turkey.

"I'll do it." Ariel shrugged helplessly. Max's life was on the line. This was her only option. She was handed a black pen which she uncapped, and quickly signed before she changed her mind.

Johnny collected the file, his eyes going through it. "You have a beautiful signature." He said softly and for some reason, he was laughing. The file was handed over to a bodyguard who in turn put it in a case. "Eat milady, we have the night to ourselves."

Ariel reluctantly picked up the cutleries, scooping a spoonful of rice which she ate slowly. She hadn't realized how hungry she was.

"In these ninety-three days, do we have to—" how was she supposed to ask? Johny knew where she was headed yet he enjoyed seeing her stutter in embarrassment.

"Do we do what couples do?" Her eyes were looking at her food. Her cheeks were flushed red with embarrassment. She just wanted to be on the safer side.

"Yes," His tone was serious. "All that couples do, we have to do."

Ariel's head shot up, her eyes clinging onto his. The alarm she had been feeling combined with shock. "That wasn't part of the contract!" She was half rising from her seat.

Johnny leaned back in his chair, falling to suppress his laughter. "It's a joke, you've read the contract, it was never mentioned there or are you—"

"No," she interrupted. "Just playing it safe, don't want what happened to re—" She clamped her mouth shut the moment she realized she was saying too much.

"What were you saying?" He inquired.

"Nothing," she took a sip from her glass which she choked on, luckily she didn't die. "Are you okay?" Johnny asked.

"Yes," she wiped her mouth with a napkin.

The next five minutes was followed by an awkward silence. Johnny looked at the time; it was far spent. Ariel also realized the same thing and she said "I have to get going now, my friend and son must be worried sick."

"I'll drop you off," Johnny was rising to his feet but she waved her hand in the air. "You don't have to, I'll find my way home."

"I insist Mrs. Johny." He smiled. " You are now my responsibility and I have to see to it that you get home safe."

The sound of being called Mrs Johnny made her toes curl in first hand embarrassment but she managed a smile. "Okay."

Johnny slipped on his jacket, with his hand to her back, he guided her to the car which was parked up front. One of the men opened the door and she entered. This is life now!

Her eyes took the car in a look, mesmerized by the interior of the luxurious car. She had been catapulted into a world for the rich and opulent.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Johnny. "This job requires your full attention which means you'll have to leave your son out of it."

That didn't sit well with her and she expressed her displeasure. "I can't leave Max alone, he's sick."

"I'll see to it that Max is well taken care of," Johnny assured her. "You can leave him with your friend." In order to convince her, he added. "If anything goes wrong, I don't want Max to become a target for my enemies."

He was right, Max had nothing to do with it so she agreed; Anya would gladly take care of Max.

"We will be leaving very soon." He reached into his inner pocket for his phone.

"To where?" Ariel asked. "I thought we were residing in spain?" That was another reason why she agreed. At least she could pop up every once in a while to see her son.

"Las vegas," he announced, sparing her a look before he averted his gaze back to his phone. "That is where your job begins."

Ariel had nothing going down her throat but she choked on air. Johnny patted her gently on the back until she stopped coughing.

"L-as vegas?" She reiterated. "Why are we going there?"

"Yes, is there a problem with that?" He narrowed his eyes on her.

"No!" Yes! Yes!! There was a problem. She had left and buried her past when she moved. What if they crossed paths and she was forced to confront him on what happened years ago! She wasn't physically or mentally ready for that.

The car pulled up to the house and he watched her until she entered the house.

"Where have you been?" Anya asked the minute Ariel walked into the apartment.

"The job interview." A tired Ariel flopped herself onto the sofa. Anya sat next to her, trying her best to restrain herself from wrapping her arms around Ariel's neck. "I called you so many times."

Ariel reached into her bag for her phone: 42 missed calls. "I'm so sorry." Ariel apologized. She had put her phone on silent to avoid any distraction while she was taking the supposed interview.

"I'll only forgive you once I hear you got the job." She gazed at her in anger.

"I did get the job," Ariel said as she brushed off the hairs that were sticking to her forehead.

Anya rose to her feet, the anger she was reeling from instantly dissipated into thin air. "Congratulations."

"Thank you," Ariel said, struggling to breathe as Anya crushed her in a tight embrace. "That's not all."

Anya let go of her, she sat next to her, eager to listen.

"I didn't get the job per say—I got married."

The air was still. Anya blinked, stunned by what her friend had just said.

"L—" She was interrupted by the ringing. Unknown caller.

"Hello," Anya answered the phone.

"Congratulations Mrs.Lucas," Said, a hoarse voice from the other end. "your past will come back to haunt you, don't think you've escaped.”

The day dragged on like wet cement for Luis. He could only stick to his daily routine, that is, patrolling the perimeter he was assigned to, checking in with security post and that was it. But his mind wasn’t on the job, it never was.Every hallway he passed and every face that he saw and greeted… they all blurred behind the steady, gnawing thought of Ariel. Johnny’s presence in the building had sent a jolt of energy through everyone. Everyone did their job with an extra energy than usual. But now the sun was dipping, the building’s rhythm slowing with each passing hour. And finally, it was time to leave. Luis dressed back to his casual wear and headed for the exit. He tapped out by the door and then signed the end-of-day register with a pen that shook faintly in his grip. “Enjoy your night.” The security assigned there remarked. Luis only nodded once then went through the door. He slipped out, as the crisp evening air hit him. The sky was painted in hues of deep orange and

The sun was out when Luis stepped out of his hotel room in a hurry. He was late for work today, but better that, than to have a footage of him leaving his boss’ office. Lucky for him, he managed to take care of it to the best he could. He stepped out of the hotel and waved down a taxi at once. The taxi after a few minutes pulled up in front of the Lucas Enterprises. Luis stepped into the lobby of the large and sleek office building, his shoulders squared and his uniform well dressed. He was safe and undiscovered for now. He'd buried the footage and wiped his tracks just enough to buy himself time, but that wouldn’t hold forever—not with Johnny’s reach. So, he had to take the next step. Just then, he noticed the lobby was humming more than usual this morning. There was a certain quiet buzz of whispers between security personnel and assistants and basically all the staff members. What was happening? Luis slowed down, subtly angling his path toward the security desk as he pulled

Johnny slammed Ariel’s door hard behind him, the echo reverberating down the hallway like a gunshot. His fists clenched at his sides, his jaw grinding as he stormed down the corridor of the penthouse. That call to Alexander, all of people. His fucking brother, that.. it wasn’t just betrayal. It felt like a slap in the face. She didn’t trust him.No matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried to keep her away from the mess, to protect her, she always went running to his brother, just like everyone else. Alexander the calm. Alexander the capable. Alexander the one who always showed up right when Johnny’s grip started to slip. The one fit to inherit the Lucas Empire. He hated it.He yanked his coat off the hook by the elevator, shrugging it on with angry, jerky movements. The elevator doors opened with a soft chime, and he stepped in, hitting the ground floor button hard enough that the panel beeped in protest.By the time he got to the front entrance of the building, one of his d

The bright morning sun of a new day filtered in through the curtains of Ariel’s room. She was already up, she couldn't get much sleep anyway, not with all that was going on right now. She stepped out of her room, her movements slow and uncertain. The silence that stretched through Johnny’s penthouse was heavy, almost suffocating. Morning light also filtered through the tall windows of the hallway, casting long shadows across the floors. Her stomach churned, not from hunger, but from tension that had lingered since last night’s confrontation. She moved barefoot toward the dining area where the scent of fresh coffee hung in the air. Johnny was already there, seated at the head of the table, a black mug in his hand. He didn’t look up as she entered. His jaw was tightened and the veins in his forearm were prominent from the tight grip he had on the cup. Even by just looking at him, Ariel could feel the anger still brewing in him. Ariel swallowed and moved to pour herself a cup of

The walls of his private study were soundproof, but it still felt like the air around him was humming with pressure. Alexander sat at the head of the king oak table, his thoughts swirling. Just then, he heard a soft knock on the door. Then with a soft creak, Kelvin pushed the door open and stepped in. “I'm here boss.” He said, his tone firm. Alexander didn't respond, he just nodded once. Kelvin moved from the door and stood across the table. He stood firm, his shoulders straight, his usual calm seen in his eyes.Alexander tossed the folder onto the table, the same one he'd given Kelvin yesterday when he first arrived. “You’ve gone through it in detail, I believe?”Kelvin nodded. “Yes. Twice actually. It's a shell company that Dario used to funnel property funds through—it's cleaner than I expected. The company had absolutely zero trails leading directly back to him. But, I did more digging about the company and I found something.”He paused, catching Alexander's gaze. “Go on.” Al
