"Right here," a deep, familiar voice sounded from behind while I stiffened. I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. His voice and the look on Rosemary’s face already gave it away. “Mom, dad. I’m sorry I’m late, I was on a call with the London office.” He chimed in while I finally turned around. The moment he saw my face, the smile on his face vanished and it was replaced with a glare. “Zane, you remember Lyra, don't you? Andrew Vane’s daughter?" Rosemary quizzed while he stared at me the whole time. “You!” He let out deeply and I knew it was about to explode. His gaze was locked on me, accusing and judging me all the way. I waited for him to spill it all but he didn’t. "I don't believe we’ve had the pleasure," he simply said while extending his hand to me. "Lyra Vane. I’ve heard quite a bit about your family’s... recent developments. I’m sorry for the circumstances that brought you here." He added while I stared at his hand. The last time those fingers had touched me, they had done wonders to my body and gave me so much pleasure. That same hand tossed dollar bills at me like I was nothing. Now, it’s stretched to me again and I feel like slapping it aside but his parents would be suspicious. I then took his hand but quickly let go in just a second. "Thank you, Mr. Ashford. Your parents have been incredibly kind." "Please, call him Zane, we’re all family here." Henry urged. The dinner felt like a chore. Henry and Rosemary tried to make it lively but the whole time, I kept thinking and stealing glances at Zane. He felt like a different person smd the fact that he was even pretending like he had never seen me before. He played the part so well that I started to doubt myself. I thought maybe my mind was playing tricks on me and he wasn’t the one. “Maybe they’re not the same person after all.” I thought to myself… We finally finished eating and I quickly excused myself. I made my way upstairs and was only halfway down the dimly lit gallery when a hand suddenly pulled me into a corner. I looked up and it was Zane holding my arm in a tight grip. He pinned me against the wall and then stared so deep into my eyes that I could feel it in my soul. "What is your game, Lyra?" he asked and that just cleared my doubts. He’s definitely the one! “Ohh wow, see who finally decided to stop pretending. I thought you didn’t know me, why the sudden change?” I slammed at him. “Will you keep your mouth shut and answer my damn question? What is your game here!” He repeated. "I don’t have any time for games please. I didn't have anywhere else to go and my dad told me to come here. I didn't even know your last name was Ashford until I saw that portrait." I replied, trying to push him away, but he wouldn’t let me. "Liar," he spat. "You knew exactly who I was that night. Or maybe you found out I am a billionaire heir, and you’ve now crawled into my parents' house to finish the job. Is the money I gave you not enough? Are you looking for a permanent settlement now that you’re broke and have nothing?" He asked and right then, I felt a deep anger surge through me. I might have lost everything but I have little dignity left, and I won’t let some arrogant brat keep treating me like trash. "Listen to me, you arrogant prick. I didn't want your money then, and I don't want it now. I would rather live in a gutter than spend another second in your presence. I’m here because your father is the only person who hasn't turned his back on me. Not because of you." I let out fiercely and then pushed him off me. “Fine, stick to whatever sick game you have planned but stay away from me. Don't talk to me, don't look at me, and don't think for a second that being under this roof makes us equals. You’re a guest of my father’s charity. Nothing more." "Gladly, consider me a ghost. You won't even know I’m here." I affirmed and I really kept to my word. For the next three weeks, I made sure I avoided him. I kept to my room all day, only going out for meals. The rest of the day is spent in my room, reading and watching the news for any word of her father but I never got any. Zane played his part too, he leaves for work really early in the morning and only comes back in the dead of the night. We were like two parallel lines that would never meet. "Good morning, dear," Rosemary said as she walked into the room. “Good morning, trust you had a great night?” I replied while she nodded with a seeet smile. "We’re having the chef prepare some smoked salmon. I specifically asked for it because of you. You’re looking a bit frail and I’m worried you’re not eating well." She explained but the sound of the food made my stomach twist like I wanted to throw up. "I... I think I'll just have tea," I said, reaching for a chair to steady herself since the room was starting to spin. "Lyra? Are you alright?" Rosemary asked and I tried to answer, but my legs suddenly became so heavy that I could no longer lift them. That was the last thing I remembered before everything went blank. I finally opened my eyes to find Rosemary sitting by my side, holding my hand. Henry was standing by the window, talking quietly to the doctor. "Where am I... what happened? Why am I in the hospital?” I exclaimed, making Rosemary jerk. Her face lit up once she saw I was awake and she quickly stood up to hug me. “Ohh sweetheart, you’re awake. You fainted and we quickly rushed you here. You’re in the hospital, honey. I’m so glad you’re back to us now. I was so scared.” She let out while I tried to flash back and see things for myself. Henry and the doctor saw I was awake too so they came over. The doctor checked me and then let out a smile. "Miss Vane, I’m Dr. Aris. We’ve run a full panel of tests. Your blood sugar was dangerously low, and you’re showing signs of significant stress and mild dehydration." He let out. "I'm sorry, I’ve had a lot on my mind lately, I guess that’s what caused it.” I replied while he nodded. "That’s understandable, but you need to start prioritizing your health now. You aren't just eating for one anymore." He retorted while I looked confused. I saw Henry and Rosemary share a knowing glance, and I could tell they were also curious. “What do you mean, doctor?” I asked. “I mean, you’re pregnant, Lyra. You’re three weeks pregnant.” He dropped the bombshell and I felt my heart stop for a second. “What?” I exclaimed…MattI was so furious when Lyra wouldn’t accept my demand. Of course, I didn’t think it would be easy which was why I tried to get June to help me but she refused. She seemed to have gotten weak and no longer motivated to get her man but I was ever ready to get mine back. I wasn’t going to sit by and watch another man steal the love of my life. Lyra and I have so much history between us and I won’t throw that away. I love her and will get her… by whatever means necessary. That was why I kidnapped her dad and that was another way I knew the universe was in support of our love. I mean, I never knew where he was hiding. It was while keeping tabs on Lyra that I found out that her dad was around and pulling some strings. That was my perfect cue and I took full advantage of it. I came up with a disguise and set a trap for him, he took it hook, line, and sinker. I was so sure Lyra would rush at every of my demand but I was wrong and I’m never wrong…“What are you talking about? How can
Lyra It was hard getting to the address Matt sent me but I had no choice than to keep going. I even got scared at a point but I quickly shook it off. He already got my dad and I needed to be strong for him. I finally got there and I barely waited till the car stopped before I jumped out. I felt a sharp pain as I ran into the building and I had to hold my belly tightly to atleast protect my baby.“Well, well, well, who do we have here?” Matt let out while I stopped to look around. It was only his voice that I was hearing but there was no one around. I looked at the other corner and then saw my dad. They had beaten him up and now tied to a chair. I ran to him but suddebly stopped when I moved closer and saw what was tied to his chest. It was a bomb with a ticking clock!“Dad!!!” I screamed, jerking him back to life. He had passed out from all the beating and was extremely weak.Matt finally stepped out then and seeing the fear on my face, he burst into laughter. I couldn’t even com
ZaneI jumped to my feet immediately she said this. I hurried to her at the door, grabbed both her arms and looked deep into her eyes. “What did you just say right now?” I asked, shaking her hard. I didn’t even realize how hard I was on her until I saw the frightened look mixed with pain on her face. I quickly dropped her hand then and raked my hands through my hair in desperation.“I’m so sorry, I just didn’t hear you well.” I let out and she nodded.“Yeah I understand and I’m being serious. Matt called me, asking for my help to get back at you. He mentioned something about you coming for his business and ruining him. I was already done with this revenge of a thing so I turned him down. This morning, he called again and told me about his plans to kidnap Lyra. I didn’t take him seriously still. He’s always been a fool so I thought he couldn’t do anything right on his own. Well, I tracked him and his location seemed sketchy so I think he might actually mean it. You should probably ju
Zane“There’s someone here to see you sir. I already told her she’s not allowed to see you but she insists I ask you first.” My assistant said over the phone. “Who is it?” I asked despite the urge to refuse. I have lots of work on my neck and I didn’t want disturbance but a part of me wanted to know who it was. “It’s June, sir. She said it’s really important to see you.” She replied.I took a second before I finally asked her to come in. A couple of seconds later, the door slowly opened and I gestured her to come in without looking up. I quickly finished with what I was doing and then finally looked up. “Why are you just standing there? Take a seat,” I said to her when I saw her looking pitiful like a dog with its tail between its legs.“Thank you, Zane.” She simply said shd sat in front of me but wouldn’t say a thing.“So I’m all ears, you want to see me?” I chimed in and she nodded. “I didn’t mean to show up unannounced. I really needed to see you. Ever since what happened at m
Lyra“You didn’t even ask about Matt, you think I didn’t do anything about him too?” Zane asked as I helped fixed his tie.“Ohhh, that’s true. I forgot completely about him. It’s not as if he matters anyway and I’m tired of having his name in my mouth.” I replied while he stared at me for a long second like I wasn’t entirely saying the truth. “What? You don’t believe me?” I quizzed while he struggled and that made me smack him. He chuckled and then smacked me too. I let out a soft moan intentionally and it came out sounding both arousing and weird, making the both of us burst into laughter. “Oh my God, you’re just too nasty. Sometimes I wonder if you’re still the same woman I met that I got married to.” He teased and I rolled my eyes. “Nah, I’m not the same woman. I killed the real Lyra you got married to and then took her place.” I teased too. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, so back to your question. What did you do to him? Care to share?” I asked and he stared at me for another long second.
Zane“Is it just me or do you look really happy tonight?” Lyra asked as I pulled her into a hug. “You’re right, I am indeed really happy. I feel so good tonight and it’s all because of you.” I replied while she furrowed her brows.“Really? Tell me about it then, how was the party and I hope it’s not June fueling this much excitement in you. I know you saw at the party so start talking.” She let out and seeing the jealousy that had now clouded her eyes, I couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m sorry I laughed, I just couldn’t help it. I can’t believe you’re getting jealous over June when you know damn well that she’s not worth it. You’re the only woman that I have eyes for and it’s going to remain that way forever.” I chimed in while she rolled her eyes playfully. Of course, she was excited and only trying to hide it. I didn’t mention it either and just let her have her moment. “You still haven’t answered my question. What part about the party got you so excited?” She repeated and I cleared
Lyra Just a week ago, the stack of hundreds had felt like a slap in the face when they hit the bed but now, they were my lifesaver. I looked up and saw my Birkin bag sitting pretty by the dresser. Of course, it looked out of place, it’s the only luxury I have left of my former life. I’ve spent t
