I looked down and placed my hand gently on my belly.

"Sorry, baby. Mommy did not feed you today," I whispered with a small pout. "I must be the worst mom already."

With another deep sigh, I forced myself up and dragged my feet toward the door.

When I opened it, I froze.

Ethan stood there, looking completely worn out.

Why was he here?

"What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice coming out colder than I intended. I could not even tell if I was mad or embarrassed. Maybe both. I did not want him to see me like this. And especially not now, not when I might be pregnant.

"Just checking on you," he replied, calm and steady, eyes locked on mine.

The way he looked at me sent a strange flutter through my chest. His stare was too intense, like he could see straight through me.

Why did he come? He was not family. He was not my boyfriend either.
