Chapter 1

Evan Rodger gently patted Claire Fisher’s back while casting me an accusatory glare.

"A grown woman like you shouldn’t be bickering with a young lady."

Before I could get a word out, several of Evan's friends shoved the door open and barged in.

"Evan sure has a good thing going with his wife."

"They’ve been together for a decade and even got matching tattoos! He is still as devoted to her as ever."

"Speaking of which, what does the matching tattoo say anyway?"

That was when they glanced in my direction and noticed the words imprinted on my chest.

Their laughter stopped in an instant as the room was plunged into an ominous silence. The only sound was Isabel Hawthorn’s chuckle.

Evan instinctively went up to shield Isabel. "Isabel, apologize to her."

Isabel pouted before apologizing reluctantly. "I’m sorry, alright?"

She rolled her eyes before muttering under her breath, "What a busybody old hag. Can’t even take a joke."

Evan patted her shoulder reassuringly before turning to me. "There, she apologized, so don’t hold it against her. She’s only twenty years old after all, still at the naive age where she doesn’t think before she speaks."

Then, he suddenly chuckled before stating with a tone of condescension, "Besides, you are an old spinster."

I felt my breath lodge in my throat. My knuckles turned white from clenching my fists too tightly. "Apology not accepted."

Then, I slowly pulled my collar up to reveal the insulting letters branded onto my skin. They still hurt after being freshly tattooed, but it was nothing compared to the throbbing pain in my heart.

I shot daggers at Evan and spoke my mind, "Since you’re not going to resolve this properly, I’ll do it myself."

As I was leaving, I heard someone talking behind me.

"Claire is the only heir to Fisher Corporation. She’s not going to scorch the earth just to get revenge, would she?"

Evan assured his friend in a confident tone, "I know her well enough to be sure that she wouldn’t do it. She loves me and wouldn’t have the heart to hurt me."

After I got into my car, I dialed my assistant's number.

"Take Isabel Hawthorn to one of the warehouses in the Western District tonight. Set up the skin grafting equipment."

I swore on my honor as a Hawthorn that I was going to get my revenge.

The next time I received news of Evan was a year later. It was during a weekend get-together with my childhood friend, Anya Bern, who excitedly told me about it."By the way, have you heard about Evan and that tattoo artist girl he ended up with?"I was midway through stirring my coffee when I paused.Anya went on in a grumbling tone, "He was working on a project when Isabel’s water suddenly broke. She gave birth to a baby girl."As it turns out, the baby was born premature and had a genetic disorder, which turns out to be a serious heart condition. It was going to cost them $800,000. On top of that, Isabel did not want the baby because she wanted a boy."Outside the window, pieces of sycamore leaves were coming down.I stayed silent.$800,000. That was the same amount Evan used to drop on a bottle of wine in clubs.I heard the money was the main point of their arguments every day.Isabel blamed Evan for being too caught up with work and spending his nights drinking when she

Claire’s voice haunted Evan day and night. It troubled him more than anything his business rivals could throw at him.The new life he was trying to build stood precariously. It was constantly being threatened and eroded by the very "true love" he had once personally vouched for.In return for sacrificing his health and dignity, he did not receive unwavering love and tender support. Instead, endless demands finally broke him.I set my teacup aside and looked at the camellias in full bloom in the courtyard.Evan must be distraught. His "true love", whom he had to sacrifice ten years of relationship for, had turned out to be a repulsive, vicious snake. All it took for the rose-tinted glasses to come off was for him to lose his wealth. All the responsibilities in a marriage that he used to regard as shackles were the cornerstones that had supported him to his current heights. Now that the cornerstone was removed, he was plunged into the cold waters of reality with his lover.I gentl

I turned to address the guests who wore a variety of confused expressions. My voice rang across the hall."From this day onward, the Fisher Corporation is officially terminating all partnerships with Mr. Rodger."The guests began to whisper among themselves as I walked down the marbled hall in my leather heels."The Fishers are cutting him off for good…""Give the way things look for the Rodgers now, shouldn’t we…""Mr. Rodger is a very capable man. What if he manages to make a comeback…""Well, but the Fishers have made their position very clear…"Isabel became near hysterical by this point. "Evan, we should…"I opened the heavy, ornate wooden door, which drew in a gust of night breeze carrying the scent of lilac blossoms. It effectively shut out the sound of their murmuring behind me.Admittedly, I’d be quite curious to see how a man stripped of everything was supposed to make a comeback in this city with an idiotic tattoo artist.A month later, one afternoon, I was sittin

Isabel looked so distressed that she began to cry hysterically as she threw herself into Evan’s arms.Evan put his arms protectively around her while casting a reproachful look at me. "Claire, why must you always be so jealous and pick on Isabel?"Before I could get a word out, he suddenly gasped as if he understood something important. His voice softened in accordance."Claire, I get what you're trying to do now." He spoke to me as if he were trying to coax a child, "You’re only doing this because you wanted me to go home, is that it?"After Isabel gives birth, I'll make arrangements for her to live overseas. Everything will return to the way it had always been, and our lives will go back to normal."Besides, she’s pregnant, so she should be with me as it is. Once she adapts to becoming a mother, everything will be alright."I burst out laughing when I looked at the way he explained with such confidence. At the same time, I felt something constrict around my throat while I laug

Evan’s expression was dark. He strained to suppress the anger in his voice. "Who gave you the right to do something like this?"Several chandeliers in the hall suddenly went off. The curtains spanning the height of the room were drawn shut as well. The guests looked on with astonishment as dozens of men in black escorted me in through a side entrance.I stopped in front of the stage and gently put the divorce papers next to the contract. "I did. You might as well sign this one, too, while you’re at it."Evan's eyes shifted back and forth between the two contracts before finally fixing a look on me. He pulled a coy smile. "Are you going to do this just because I’m fathering Isabel's child? Claire, you know how things are these days. There are plenty of successful men with mistresses on the side."You grew up in the business world. Shouldn’t you be familiar with how things work by this point?"Isabel remained wrapped around him while casting a derisive look at me.I glanced at her

"Claire?"Evan panicked faintly when I pulled away from him. He instinctively took a step forward, hoping to sway me somehow. The scent of cheap perfume grew stronger when he approached. That was when Isabel showed up out of nowhere and threw herself into his arms."Evan! She had them forcefully graft my skin to get revenge… It hurts so much…"Evan looked at the gauze wrapped around her chest, then at my chest with the tattoo removed. His expression dropped in an instant."Claire, how could you be so cruel?"Isabel was all around him and was weeping her eyes out. However, I noticed the smug, taunting look in her eyes. "She’s so young. How do you expect her to live with that kind of scar?" His tone was severe, and his eyes were filled with disappointment. "What is it going to take for you to be satisfied? Must you ruin her?"I observed how protective he became when it came to Isabel. As I watched his fierce protectiveness toward Isabel, I couldn't help but recall the man he was
