Time passes, and my sobs fade into sniffles as I take jagged breaths, each one feeling like shards of ice in my lungs. I lean my head back and stare up at the dark canopy, drowning in despair, when something flickers in front of my eyes. I wipe the remaining tears away and try to focus, only to find a tiny, pink glowing orb dancing in front of my face like a firefly, except fireflies don’t give off a pink light.I try to swat away the little orb, but it dodges my hand as if it’s sentient. It moves closer to my face, then moves back and forth as if beckoning me…“What the fuck?” I murmur in confusion.The orb zips a few feet away from me, bouncing between two trees before zooming right back over to me until it’s right against my nose. I’m busying myself with dinner, salivating as I breathe in the delicious aroma of my chicken stir fry, when a sudden kick from within my belly has me clutching the countertop and gasping for air. I manage to keep myself upright while I focus on taking slow breaths. Each inhale seems to compound the pressure in my belly, so I do my best to keep my breaths shallow. I lift my shirt and examine the familiar, prominent veins and bruises that have begun forming across my belly once again.
