Chapter 8

Aвтор: Blubber Fish
Winona gritted her teeth so hard that it was almost as if they would turn to dust.

Isabel said, "Remember what I said last night, Winona? I wasn't brushing you off. You'll only be truly victorious if you can convince Samuel to divorce me."

As she spoke, she surreptitiously approached Winona. Then, she grabbed the latter's right hand to prevent her from actually hurting herself.

For a split second, Winona almost bought her words. But it was only for a second. She suddenly laughed hysterically and exclaimed, "You're just afraid that I'll hurt myself and get you into trouble, aren't you?"

Isabel frowned. Unexpectedly, Winona loosened her hold on the knife and allowed it to fall to the floor. Then, she growled, "Slashing my wrist isn't the only way to hurt myself, you know."

An extremely bad feeling rose in Isabel. Her gut told her not to let Winona go, but the latter swooped down and chomped down hard on the back of Isabel's hand.

Isabel cried out in pain and loosened her hold. Then, Winona ran past her, ramming her head against the wall with a loud thud. At the same time, she screamed in pain.

Isabel was stunned by this plot twist. She'd completely underestimated how psychotic Winona was!

She was about to step forward when Sheila and everyone else arrived. At the sight of Winona's bloody forehead, Sheila cried shakily, "Winnie, my Winnie! What happened to you?"

Cameron first glanced at Winona before sweeping a thoughtful gaze over Isabel. Then, he turned to the butler and said, "Get a doctor!"

Winona's head spun, and she saw stars. Still, she looked at Isabel weakly and with grievance as she lay in Sheila's arms. That alone was enough to make everyone think Isabel had done something.

Sheila's eyes reddened with rage. "How dare you hurt my daughter, Isabel! How dare you!"

Richard and Samuel happened to hear that as they hurried over from the study. Samuel burst into the room and looked down at Winona, seeing the blood on her forehead. Then, he stood before Isabel without even stopping to think about what had happened. He asked in disbelief, "Did you do this, Izzy?"

Isabel would be lying if she said she wasn't hurt by his doubt. It was bad enough that he'd betrayed her. How could he suspect her when they'd known each other for 22 years? Anyone else could doubt her, but not him!

To Samuel, Isabel's silence was nothing but a quiet admission. His expression turned frosty as he snarled, "Izzy, no matter how much you hate Winnie, you shouldn't have done something like this. It's not like you at all."

"Sam…" Winona called his name tearfully.

He gave Isabel a warning look, but he didn't say anything else. Instead, he bent down and lifted Winona into his arms. "I'll carry Winnie back to her room."

As soon as he was out of the room, Sheila slapped Isabel hard across the face, catching the latter off guard. "I should've given you this slap ages ago when we were downstairs! You'd better pray Isabel is fine, or I'll kill you!"

"Mom, that's enough." Cameron stepped forward and shielded Isabel. "Go check on Winnie."

Sheila snorted and left.

Cameron turned and reached out to touch Isabel's cheek. "Does it hurt?"

She turned away so there was no contact. "She did that to herself."

He said, "It doesn't matter how it happened. You saw exactly how things went, didn't you?"

It didn't matter? Isabel glared at him. "You're a lunatic, too!"

Then, she shoved him aside and stormed out of the room. She ran out of the Shore residence, her expression icy. However, she couldn't stop her tears from flowing.

In truth, Winona's scheme was clumsy and poorly executed. But no matter how flawed her methods were, everyone would still believe her.

Why? Because she was sick. Because the Shores all knew about what was going on between her and Samuel. They were positive Isabel held a grudge against her for it, so it was perfectly normal that she would hurt Winona in the heat of the moment.

But how could Samuel think that of her?

Isabel felt like she'd been dunked in ice-cold water. Her heart had already gone numb from being frozen over. As she drove out of the neighborhood, her phone rang.

She wanted to ignore it, thinking that it was a call from the Shores or Sam. To her surprise, it was Dominic.

"You can't kick me out—this is Mr. Donovan's home. Besides, Mrs. Donovan allowed me to stay." Samuel didn't even flinch at Isabel's harshness. He strode toward her and smiled. "I hired the best general practitioner in Jeriton to check on Mr. Donovan, and he's upstairs now. Do you want to go take a look?"Isabel suppressed her anger as she glared at him. "Don't you realize how pointless this is?"Samuel's smile remained in place. "Nothing is pointless if it has to do with you."She backed away as he approached. Then, she headed upstairs, no longer wanting to waste her time and breath on him.He smiled and turned back to the casserole he was cooking, feeling satisfied. The doctor was speaking to Harriett on the second floor. He said heavily, "It'll happen over the next few days. There's no point in trying any other medication. I'm sorry, Mrs. Donovan."She dried her tears and nodded. "Thank you."Despite knowing nothing could be done, Isabel still felt cold all over upon hearing t

Isabel was rendered speechless by Dominic's words."Are you going to take me to all of your favorite date spots, Ms. Shore?" Dominic was sounding more jealous by the second, and his displeasure was written all over his face. She wanted to roll her eyes at him, but she knew she couldn't. Instead, she pulled out her phone and showed him her membership for the dessert shop. It was linked to Kimberly."This is my date spot with Kimberly."This time, it was Dominic's turn to be speechless.Isabel put her phone away and said, "It's still early, so I want to buy some pastries for the team's afternoon tea. If you don't want to go in with me or even have anything, I'll have to ask you to wait in the car."He got out of the car as soon as the words were out of her mouth. The smile on her face was getting stiff. She'd only treated him to a meal to repay a favor, yet he made it seem like she'd brought him out for a date. What a scene he was causing. The dessert shop's employee greeted Isa

Ian smiled. "All the other tables are taken, Ms. Shore.""They are?" Isabel looked around. That sure didn't seem like the case.Ian's smile remained in place. "They will be soon."Dominic had already taken his seat. "Isabel, I'm hungry."Isabel had no choice but to suppress her curiosity and sit down. After ordering a few of the dishes she usually ordered, she asked, "Mr. Zimmerman, is there anything you'd like?""I'm fine with anything. You pick whatever you want," he said. And so, she ordered a few more dishes.Ian asked, "Will you still have a bottle of wine?""Still"? Dominic narrowed his eyes slightly as he watched Isabel. She shook her head and asked for juice.Once Ian left, Dominic asked coolly, "You come here often?""I…""Or rather, you and Samuel come here often?""No… Kimberly and I come here a lot, too."Dominic smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "So, this is where you guys come on dates.""No, it's not."His expression darkened. "There are plenty of res

Cameron soon heard about Winona being detained.Sheila went to him, her eyes red-rimmed from her tears. "Both your father and sister have been detained—how can you sit there as if nothing's happened? Think of a way to get them out!"Her urging and weeping annoyed him to no end. He pressed a hand to his forehead and said, "She was the one who went online to argue with those people despite knowing the trouble we faced, and she tried to attack Izzy with the police watching. She'll turn into a worthless piece of trash if you keep spoiling her like this, Mom!""Have you forgotten that she's sick?" Sheila cried. "If those people hadn't goaded Winnie, would she have acted so rashly? I can't believe you're blaming her at a time like this! Hurry up and get her out first!""I won't. She can stay in there for a few days to reflect on her mistakes," Cameron said coldly."You! How dare you!" Sheila clutched her heaving chest. "You're just siding with Isabel, the bitch!""Mom!" Cameron's head

"Fuck your apology!" Isabel spat. The four people standing nearby displayed varying degrees of surprise when they heard her.Isabel was beautiful, and she carried herself with a natural grace that anyone's first impression of her would be that she was a proper lady. Hearing her swear at Samuel created such a stark contrast with her usual behavior.Dominic smiled. Now, she looked more like what an angry person was supposed to be like.Isabel looked at Samuel icily. "I'll hold a grudge against you for life for this!""No, don't!" He grabbed her hand. "I'm sorry, Izzy! I really am! I'll get the world's best doctors to treat Mr. Donovan now, and I'll apologize to him. I'll find a way to make up for this! Please, don't be mad at me. Don't ignore me!"Dominic's smile disappeared at that, and his expression turned frosty. He strode toward them.Ray was engrossed in the drama. When he saw Dominic leave to help Isabel, he started to follow in excitement. "Boss is going over there. Let's

Winona shook her head vigorously and looked at Samuel pitifully. "Don't fall for their lies, Sam! I didn't do it, I swear!"How could Samuel possibly believe her? He knew exactly what she was like."Do you realize that your father was just detained last night?" he asked icily. "Instead of keeping your head down and staying out of trouble, you chose to make things worse. If not for my father ordering me to come down here, you think I'd want to stick my nose in your business?"He was threatening Winona, but he was also indirectly telling Isabel that he hadn't come on his own volition.Winona pursed her lips as tears streamed down her face. "Sam, I'm your wife.""Shut up!" Samuel snapped at her, feeling irritated."Officer Jones, are we here to watch a soap opera?" Dominic asked coolly.Tom could feel a headache coming on. He shot his colleagues a look. Ultimately, Winona was still dragged away. She cried and screamed Samuel's name, but he didn't even spare her a glance. Finally, h
