Anacá
The moment I opened the door, my dad stormed in with an annoyed scowl on his face. I stepped back and watched him warily. Did he know what I had done? What would I tell him if he asked? Obviously, I would be honest with him. I couldn’t entertain Josh’s request and hide his fault.
“So, you’re here. We have been waiting for you at Jeremy’s place.” He scowled more as he went straight to the living room. “Since when have you become so irresponsible, Anacá?”
“No, dad. I..” Before I could think of an answer or close the door, another car stopped in our driveway, and Josh’s parents emerged. My mouth hung open, realizing what was in store for me now. How would I face them? What would I tell them?
Picking up my phone, I quickly typed a message to Josh.
Your parents are at our house to grill me. I’ll be totally honest.–Anacá.
My phone instantly pinged with a reply from Josh. It didn’t look like he was focused on his job.
Don’t tell them about Jordynn. It’s an urgent request–Josh.
I rolled my eyes at his absurd request. What would I tell them then?
“Anacá, there you are. We were waiting for your update. What happened?” said Aunt Dana, hugging me briefly.
“I just returned, Aunt Dana. I was considering freshening up and heading to your house.”
“Happy now? See, you were worrying unnecessarily. I know you can depend more on Anacá than that worthless son of yours,” Uncle Jeremy taunted his wife as always.
“As if he isn’t your son. By the way, he takes after you.” I smiled at their non-stop bickering. They would never change.
“Anacá, come and sit here with us. We’re waiting for an update. Did you meet Josh? Did you two get engaged?” My dad patted the seat next to him, and I reluctantly joined them. What would I tell them? How would I lie?
“No, I mean, he was busy, and I didn’t get to meet him.” Thankfully, they bought my excuse, and I released a sigh of relief.
“It’s good you didn’t, Anacá. I was thinking of having your engagement at home this weekend,” said Aunt Dana, leaving me totally speechless.
How would I tell her I hated Josh? I wanted to decline her, but one look at dad’s smiling face made me hold back. Would he receive another heart attack if I declined?
“Hold on, Dana. Let your son get down on one knee and propose to the girl. At least she deserves that much.” It was the most awkward situation in my life. How do I always get into them?
“As if you had, Jeremy! Remember now?”
I left them to their banter and rose to serve drinks. “I’ll get something for you.”
“It doesn’t matter. They’ve known one another for so long, we can just get them engaged this weekend, Jerry. I have no faith in my health. I want to see my child well-settled and happy before I go. My health is failing me, and I have no time to wait. Let’s get on with the engagement first and the wedding a month later.” I overheard my dad plead with Uncle Jeremy, and my heart sank. I wanted to rush back to the room and confess, but something held me back. It was concern for my dad’s well-being, as always.
“Relax, Charlie. Don’t stress yourself so much. We’ll get them wedded soon. Nothing will happen to you. Dana, you can prepare for the engagement this Saturday at home. And please ensure that your worthless son is present at his engagement.”
“Why do you always call him that? It’s no wonder he doesn’t want to be at home.”
I walked into the kitchen with my mind in a state of confusion. How would I stop the engagement now? I felt disgusted with Josh. I was going through sh*t only because of him. If only I could tell his parents how he had insulted me.
I pulled out my phone and messaged him again.
They’re planning to get us engaged this Saturday. If you don’t cancel it, I’ll tell everyone how you and Jordynn have insulted me.–Anacá.
I prepared the drinks and served them on a tray when my phone buzzed with Josh’s reply.
I’ll talk to them. Can you meet me in the evening? There’s another problem–Josh.
I muttered curses at him. Why would I meet him after the way he treated me?
I’m busy. Sort your problems with your b*tch.–Anacá.
I wasn’t an evil person, but Josh pushed all the wrong buttons today, and I was mad at him.
Meet me, or I’ll talk to your dad about your deeds.–Josh.
Go ahead. You forced me to take the extreme step.–Anacá.
I switched off my phone, seething with fury at his underhanded blackmailing. He could go f*ck himself for all I cared. Pasting a fake smile on my face, I walked out of the kitchen with the drinks.
Just as I had expected, they were going overboard with their engagement planning. It made me claustrophobic. “I’m going to the departmental store, Dad. There’s nothing at home.”
He nodded, handing me some money. Relieved, I escaped their torture, swearing to return late once they left. If only I could escape my engagement!
It was next to impossible. Switching on my phone, I scrolled through the messages Josh had sent me, pleading with me to meet him. Didn’t he get the idea yet? I might have known him all my life, but today I realized what a di*khead he was. He destroyed everything between us. Not that there was much. Josh had spent his growing-up years at an expensive boarding school, and we had hardly met until he completed his studies and returned home. Two years older than me, he considered me unfit to hang out with. I had thought he would change after marriage, but I was so wrong.
I drove over to the departmental store to kill time. My eyes fell on a newspaper with a vibrant advertisement on the front page.

I clicked a picture using my phone. This was the opportunity I was looking for. My last job at Carnival Cruises had stagnated with no salary hike or promotion despite my good performance. When my boss demanded favors in return for a promotion, I had no other option than to quit. But Emerald Star Cruises was huge and had already made a name in the shipping industry. I was sure the experience would be worth the effort.
My mood improved, and I collected the essentials for the house. Maybe I would talk to Dad after Josh’s parents left. I would try to reach out to him before Saturday.
When I returned home two hours later, Dad had fallen asleep. I sorted through the groceries I bought and later sat down at my laptop to apply for a suitable position at Emerald Star Cruises. For the first time in days, I felt better, hoping to get a job there. Any job would do.
My phone buzzed again, and I groaned, knowing who it would be.
I’m coming over if you don’t meet me.- Josh.
I lost my patience with his pestering.
I’m not meeting you. Just tell me what you have to say.–Anacá.
I can’t. Can I call you?–Josh.
I scowled at my phone. Why couldn’t he message me instead?
I rolled my eyes with disgust. If the hatred was mutual, why did he need to call me?
My phone buzzed with an incoming call from Josh, and I seethed with fury. “*ssh*l*.”
I took the call. “What do you have to say?” I went straight to the point.
“Look, I can’t tell anyone about Jordynn now. She’s in a toxic marriage and planning a divorce. It’s complicated. I don’t want to complicate her life further by involving my parents.”
I massaged my temples, at my wit’s end already. “Then how do we postpone our engagement? I have no wish to get engaged to you.”
Josh sighed, and I somehow couldn’t stop the feeling of dread from gripping my heart. I knew his answer before he could utter a single word.
“We have to go ahead with it, Anacá.”
I trembled with fury at his suggestion. Did he think I would ever agree? “I won’t get engaged to an *ssh*l* like you, Josh. I don’t give a d*mn about you and Jordynn’s problems. You deserve it for insulting me.” I disconnected the call and stormed out of my room to talk to my dad. Surely, he would understand if I explained the situation to him.
Anacá My dad was still in his room, and I trudged over to the kitchen to prepare dinner. Even after an hour, when Dad didn’t emerge, I was worried. Was everything fine? He never slept so much when his favorite match was going on.I went up to his room and peered in. Thankfully, he was still lying on his bed. I walked over to his side to see him breathing hard with beads of perspiration on his forehead.“What’s wrong, Dad? Are you feeling unwell?” My heart constricted with panic to see him in this condition. It seemed my worst fear was coming true.“I can’t breathe, Anacá.” His choked whisper brought me out of my daze, and I picked up the phone to call 166 for an ambulance.“I’ll take you to the hospital, Dad. Please hold on. Nothing will happen to you.” Tears of helplessness stung my eyes. It was the same situation I had faced before. No, I couldn’t break down. In five minutes, I was ready when the doorbell buzzed.I rushed forward to open the door. The pre-meds had arrived, and I le
Anacá The door opened, and Josh strode in with a smile, immediately making me wary. Why was he in such high spirits when I was dying a slow death here? He turned to wait for someone outside the door, and I peered out to check who it was. Had he brought Jordynn along with him? It would be such a tremendous insult to my dad and his parents. But mostly, it would be an insult to me.However, instead of Jordynn, it was none other than Eros Nikolaou who walked up the porch and into the house! The moment he came in, his eyes held me captive. I gasped with horror as his fiery gaze burned through my skin. He seemed furious with me, as if I had committed a crime. My glance fell on his finger, and my heart stopped for a second. I could see my sapphire ring still on his finger! I couldn’t breathe. My eyes went up to meet his angry, brooding gaze. However, Josh seemed unaware of the chaos he had invited. Why did he? Couldn’t he just speak to his parents instead? There was a shocked silence all ar
Anacá I was still in a daze after Eros left. All the guests had their dinner and left after an evening of enjoyment. It was torture for me to answer their questions. Jess helped a lot, and I could see she was struggling to restrain her curiosity in front of so many guests. I got busy with Dad, although he tried hard to show he was normal.“It’s time for your medicine, Dad. Let’s go to your room.” Uncle Jeremy helped me escort Dad to his room. Ever since Eros left, I felt too embarrassed to face Josh’s parents. They might be so disappointed in their only son. He vanished without giving them a clue about his plans, embarrassing them in front of their friends and relatives.Jess left the room while I administered the medicines to Dad.After she left, Dad turned to face his best friend and benefactor. “I’m sorry for the way things turned out, Jerry. It wasn’t what we had planned, but maybe that’s what the children wanted. Please don’t be upset. I’m sure Josh will choose a nice girl for h
Eros Nikolaou's POV“Have you informed your father, Eros?” asked my nanny, Theia Stavridis. She had no family and had cared for me like her own, selflessly, for the last thirty-one years. I always looked upon her like a mother and still do. She never left me, even when I outgrew the need for a nanny. Even when I moved out of my dad’s house, she visited me frequently. But today, I sought her help with the wedding preparations. Just as I had expected, my dad, Homer Nikolaou, wasn’t at home. It wasn’t something new. Since the day he had adopted me, he was always absent from my life. But I wasn’t complaining. He was the only one who adopted me when my biological parents dumped me on his doorstep at birth. I still had no idea who my actual parents were. It was the harsh reality of my life. Not that Homer Nikolaou, my dad, loved me. He adopted me for a motive and left me in Theia’s care. He needed an heir to get access to his father, Atlas Nikolaou’s property and businesses. That was the on
Anacá's POVIt was a bad idea to allow him to pack with me. The moment I dumped the dresses he bought for me into the trolley bag, I noticed where his attention was. It was on the matching lingerie that came with the outfits. What was there to look? Wasn’t he the one to buy them for me? But how did he know my size? God! It was so creepy!I was acutely aware of his presence near me. It felt strange to have him in my personal space, in my bedroom. Every time our hands brushed, I jumped. What would I do after the wedding? Would he want me to please him in bed? I panicked, not having thought of it before. Was this a real wedding? Would he claim me as his wife? I had no idea what I was getting into.“There done. Anything else you may need?” He looked around my closet, and I blushed at the mess. What might he think of me?“No. This is all I need for the wedding.” I was bursting with curiosity about his plans. It was necessary to tell him I wasn’t going anywhere with him tonight. My dad need
Anacá's POVMy heart and mind went into overdrive at the prospect of facing him. I wasn’t mentally prepared to face him now. Just when I had thought I would meet him at the altar, he had to unsettle me. Why did he need a first look?“Do we have the time for a first look?”Theia sighed at Eros’s impossible request. “If you decline him, he’ll go crazy, Anacá. He has always been that way since childhood.”I opened and closed my mouth like a goldfish, unable to form words. I wanted to ask her so many things.“Done, ma’am. Do you need anything else?” asked the attendant, who was fixing my veil.I came out of my daze and gazed at my reflection in the mirror. It was strange that the wedding dress fit me perfectly. But how? I hadn’t found the time to try it on even once. The illusion neckline, back, embellished bodice, and swirling full-length a-line silhouette made me look almost ethereal. My mom’s diamond earrings matched the look, and so did the hairdo. With a few tendrils framing my face,
Anacá's POVI watched him lean towards me. With his hand holding mine and tugging me towards him, I didn’t know what he was planning to do. I gave him a hesitant look as his lips drew closer to mine. My heart stopped for a minute as I waited for him to claim my lips before everyone. With pin-dropped silence in the chapel, I was sure my heartbeats could be heard loud and clear.Unable to control my heartbeats, I closed my eyes and waited. A feathery peck at the corner of my mouth was all I felt, and we were announced as man and wife!I opened my eyes in confusion. Was that all? He pulled me out of the chapel and waited at the backside to greet the guests one by one as they left. Afterwards, they all gathered and threw rice at us, as was customary. I noted the tears of happiness in Dad’s eyes and smiled back at him.We left the church premises and entered the main building. With my heart pounding in my chest, I was still in a state of daze. Was it over? Where was he taking me?“Congratu
Anacá's POVEros’s rebuff rang in my head. I understood there was a lot hidden beneath his charming exterior. He wasn’t what he portrayed. Then why did he marry me?I wanted to revolt. Did he think he could get away with that? He hadn’t bought me. I was in this only for my dad. Or with all his riches, Eros Nikolaou could go fu*k himself! As if sensing my thoughts, he tightened his grip around my waist, plastering me to his side like before.I didn’t want to be paraded like a plastic trophy wife, but one look at my dad’s smiling face made me give in. I could do anything to make him happy.Eros introduced me to his extended family. There was his father’s younger brother, Enriquez Nikolaou; his wife, Delphine; and sons, Victor and Amadeus, who glared at us as we greeted all the guests. It didn’t look like they were happy with our union. The other family was Damian’s. His mom, Odessa, was Eros’s aunt, his dad’s older sibling. It was difficult to understand her as she pulled me into a cust
Eros“So, that’s my resume. I’m sure you know my qualifications, Eros. I’ll come down to the office tomorrow. With my experience, I can handle any top managerial job.”I gave Vincent a withered look. “Right now, we have no vacancy. Why don’t you apply at other companies?” I had no wish to induct him into my business. I would have avoided it if Dad hadn’t been so adamant. But with dad supporting them, I had no say in the matter. Victor had been trying to convince me for the last forty minutes in my dad’s study. It made me feel suffocated. Why couldn’t he get the idea?He gave me a shocked look. “Do you expect a Nikolaou to go begging others for a job? We are one of the top business families in the country, bro. Wouldn’t it tarnish your reputation?”I shook my head. “Nope. I’m an open-minded guy. Applying for jobs isn’t begging. With your qualifications, you’re serving a company, helping a business in return for money. It’s better than bothering others for money. That’s begging.” I coul
AnacáThe door opened, and a uniformed staff greeted us. “Mr. Nikolaou is waiting for you in the great room.”Eros led me down the grand foyer towards the lavishly decorated great room. Everything about the villa was exotic and over the top. It was quite suffocating, hardly the home I’d like to live in. Thankfully, it wasn’t my home. Eros had built his own private sanctuary for us. He seemed the most sensible of the lot.His grip on my hand was so tight it hurt. Why was he crushing my hand? Maybe he was stressed. It was normal, given the circumstances he was in. Even I was stressed. I couldn’t wait for this ordeal to get over. Would I stay in Eros’s life as his wife by the end of the day?Relax, Anacá.Breathe.I must trust my husband. He promised me that no one could separate us.Voices echoed around us as we entered the lavish great room. I tried hard to remain calm at all costs. The whole family seemed to have gathered here. In fact, even Acacia was present, busy chatting up Lydia,
Anacá I watched the jaw-dropped look on his face, and a sense of satisfaction coursed through my body.“Where were you? I looked for you everywhere. I thought you had left.” The fear in his eyes was clearly visible, and it felt good to know he wanted me to stay with him.“I went to grab a bite. After the way she insulted me, I had no wish to tolerate her.” I felt a little foolish for reacting to Acacia.“Oh, the food I ordered was for you. Why didn’t you have it?”“She snatched it from me.”Eros rolled his eyes in exasperation. “Anacá, you had the right to throw her out. You’re not just my PA. You’re the owner of Emerald as well. You should know and understand your rights.”My heart filled with an overwhelming urge to hug him. Did he really consider me the owner of his business? I hadn’t expected him to. “Oh, I am?” I couldn’t stop the urge any longer. Was he for real? We hadn’t been married for even a month, and he had already declared me the owner of his business. I didn’t need a s
ErosRelief washed over me at the sight of my wife in my office. She didn’t flee or bear a grudge against me professionally. She left home to shoulder her responsibilities. Despite having judged her wrong, my heart swelled with pride. Anacá had proved me wrong. She had proved herself. I knew I had made no mistake in choosing her as my PA.“Emergency? Why didn’t they inform me?” My eyebrows pinched together at her explanation.“They did. Your phone was muted, I guess.” She roped in the technical team to explain the situation in brief. “It’s taken care of. You can start your meeting anytime.”The door opened, and Maria from the Marketing team peered in. “Mr. Young has arrived, sir. Shall I escort him here?”“Yes, we’re ready to start.” The technical team walked out, leaving me with Anacá.“Umm, I’ll go to my office, then.” She gave me an indecisive look.“No. Stay here with me. I need you.” I watched her cheeks color at my double-edged words. “To record the minutes of the meeting, obvio
Eros I gazed at her beautiful face, so close to mine. If I dipped my head a few more inches, I could get a taste of heaven. Her lips were beckoning me to continue where we had left off. And then she licked her lips, her nervous gaze dropping to mine. I lost control. “Anacá,” I whispered her name almost like a prayer. “Yeah?” There was a shyness in her eyes that made my stomach tighten with arousal. I knew she wanted the kiss as much as I did. “Let me complete what we started earlier. I can’t sleep.” I could see the hot flush creep up her body, staining her cheeks and neck. It made me warm too, and my co*k responded instantly. “And what do you want to complete?” She tried hard to appear calm, but her hot breath came in gasps while her heart thumped wildly against her chest. I could feel every breath, every beat distinctly. Was she inviting me to do more than just a kiss? I leaned closer, and she gasped with surprise. “We can start with a kiss and see where it goes. Hmm?” “Okay.”
AnacáThe moment the door closed, Eros smiled at me, waving the document in the air. “I’m the happiest man alive tonight. Can you believe it? Dad has finally signed his business over to me. I never expected this day to happen so soon. And it’s only because of you, Anacá.” My jaw dropped to the floor. What? Didn’t his dad threaten to disown him if I didn’t leave him? Then how did this miracle happen? “I’m sure this has nothing to do with me, Eros. It’s your hard work that has paid off.” Maybe his dad didn’t have the heart to disown him. I was sure it had nothing to do with me. “I disagree. Dad had come prepared. If he disliked you, he would have shown his disapproval. He wouldn’t have transferred the business to my name. Instead, he would have asked me to get rid of you. He’s quite stubborn and difficult to please when you try. Surprisingly, he liked you at first sight.” He looked so excited, I couldn’t burst his happy bubble and tell him about my interaction with his dad. It was an
Anacá Dinner was bearable after his dad’s little reminder. I could feel the power he wielded over everyone present here, including Eros. After dinner, he declined the dessert I offered him. It hurt me, but I preferred hiding my feelings. “Dad has diabetes. He stays away from sugary treats.” Eros leaned in to whisper. It cheered me up again. I was glad Eros cleared the misunderstanding on my part. “We’ll leave, bro. Are you staying?” asked Uncle Enriquez. “Yes. I want to talk to Eros. You can go ahead. Eros will see you off.” They left, and Eros went downstairs to see them off. I felt acutely aware of his dad’s shrewd eyes watching me intently. “Come here, Anacá. I wanted to talk to you.” He gestured towards the opposite couch, and I complied. I wondered what he wanted to discuss with me. We just met, and he didn’t like me.” “Yes, Mr. Nikolaou.” My heart pounded in apprehension as I waited for him to start. Somehow, I had the feeling this wouldn’t be pleasant. “Look, I know yo
Anacá “Uh.” My eyes widened as he leaned closer. The world ceased to revolve around me, and it seemed that there were only the two of us in the room. How he looked at me set a flutter in my stomach. I stood transfixed to the spot, watching him with delirious eyes. He pulled my face toward him and brushed my lips lightly with his. The soft touch was enough to send my senses into overdrive. A throbbing started deep down, and I needed the kiss to quell the desire I felt. “F*ck!” He raised his head to look into my eyes, and I gasped at the burning desire I saw in them. His fingers tangled into my hair as he crashed his lips to mine, this time yanking my head back to gain better access. His tongue probed into my mouth, colliding with my tongue, and all my inhibitions flew out of the windows. I needed him as much as he needed me. At that moment, I forgot we had an audience. A moan echoed around us, and surprisingly, it was from him. The kiss grew desperate, and I wrapped my arms around
Anacá I walked into the bedroom while Lucy preferred following Eros to the kitchen. It seemed more than me; his charm had bowled over my pet dog. I entered the enormous walk-in closet that was almost empty. With only one side occupied, I had the rest of the space to myself for my new and old belongings. This was a work I hated, but what choice did I have? I couldn’t call Jess here to help me. In fact, Jess had completely disappeared from my life. Even my calls to her went unanswered. I wondered what she was up to. “Woof!” Lucy trotted inside to rub her body against my legs. I stroked her head and smiled. “Where’s your new buddy? Did you ditch him downstairs?” I chuckled at my joke. “Why? Are you missing me? I’m all yours.” His voice echoed from behind, and I jumped out of my skin. Wasn’t he downstairs making dinner for us? I whirled around to find him leaning against the doorframe of the closet. His words echoed in my head. I’m all yours. He was mine. A warm flush crept up my c
