Chapter Four - Facing My Doom

Anacá

My dad was still in his room, and I trudged over to the kitchen to prepare dinner. Even after an hour, when Dad didn’t emerge, I was worried. Was everything fine? He never slept so much when his favorite match was going on.

I went up to his room and peered in. Thankfully, he was still lying on his bed. I walked over to his side to see him breathing hard with beads of perspiration on his forehead.

“What’s wrong, Dad? Are you feeling unwell?” My heart constricted with panic to see him in this condition. It seemed my worst fear was coming true.

“I can’t breathe, Anacá.” His choked whisper brought me out of my daze, and I picked up the phone to call 166 for an ambulance.

“I’ll take you to the hospital, Dad. Please hold on. Nothing will happen to you.” Tears of helplessness stung my eyes. It was the same situation I had faced before. No, I couldn’t break down. In five minutes, I was ready when the doorbell buzzed.

I rushed forward to open the door. The pre-meds had arrived, and I led them to Dad’s room. “The patient is suffering from pre-heart attack symptoms. It’s a good sign you’ve acted fast. Shortness of breath, discomfort, chest pain, and fatigue are the first symptoms that occur weeks before an attack. We’ll transport the patient to the hospital of your choice, Ms. DuVernay.”

I nodded. “He’s consulting Dr. Athan Doukas, Chief Cardiologist at Athens Medical Center. We can admit him there. I have insurance to cover the cost.”

On the way to the hospital, I called Uncle Jeremy to update him. “Don’t worry, dear. I’m reaching the hospital right away.”

It was a mad rush at the hospital to get Dad admitted to the ICU right away. Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Dana arrived to support me. After two hours, Dad opened his eyes and responded to the treatment.

“Are you feeling better, Dad?” I sat by his bedside, waiting to speak to the doctor.

He nodded and grabbed my hand to comfort me. “Go home, Anacá. I’m fine.”

The doctor arrived a few minutes later. “We’ll observe him for the next twenty-four hours, Ms. DuVernay. If the patient is stable, we’ll discharge him the day after. But you must take utmost care to not trigger the symptoms, or the patient’s condition might deteriorate.”

“Yes, Doctor. I’ll keep that in mind. Thank you so much for reviving my dad.”

There wasn’t much to do as they refused to allow me in the ICU afterward. Dad slept soundly, and Uncle Jeremy dropped me home. “I’ll see you at the hospital tomorrow morning. Take care, Anacá.”

I trudged up the porch to an empty house. It didn’t feel like home without my dad. Yet I knew I had to put up a brave front and face reality. The only solace was that I could save my dad’s life. I could prevent the attack, but for how long?

I sat down at a lonely dinner when the realization hit me hard. My dad’s health was in my hands. I had to keep him happy. It only meant I had to abide by his wish if that was the only way to keep him happy. A deep, shattering sigh escaped my lips, knowing I could never talk to him about Josh and his betrayal. I couldn’t give him any more stress.

But accepting Josh was like committing suicide. I hated him with a vengeance. It was the strangest situation I had ever faced.

The next day, I stayed at the hospital all morning, only to visit home briefly to freshen up. Uncle Jeremy and Aunt Dana stayed by me in the evening, but Dr. Douglas didn’t discharge Dad. “We’re waiting for his latest ECG report. If all goes well, you can take the patient home tomorrow.”

The doctor allowed us to visit Dad for five minutes. He smiled on seeing us, and it eased my mind a little. “Hey, Dad! The doctor said you can go home tomorrow.”

He patted his bedside for me to sit. “Come here, Anacá. Sit with me. I hate staying here, and you know it. Why did you bring me here? I would have recovered at home after a few days.”

“Stop complaining, Charlie. You’re alive because Anacá didn’t waste time waiting. You should be thankful to God for blessing you with such a daughter,” scolded Uncle Jeremy.

Dad clasped my hand in his frail one. “I know, Jerry. I am thankful, but I wanted to be discharged today. It’s Anacá and Josh’s engagement tomorrow, and there’s so much to do. I wouldn’t want to miss it at all.”

My heart sank as I gave Aunt Dana a helpless look. “The engagement can wait, Dad. Please, can we focus on your health now?”

He shook his head vehemently, already getting worked up. “No, this is the most important thing for me right now. Dana, please don’t postpone the engagement. I have very little time left. I want to see her happily wedded. Jerry, can you ensure my daughter gets engaged tomorrow? I can rest in peace if she weds into your family. I know both of you will take care of her like your own.”

Dad was breathing hard again. His grip on my hand was too tight, and I panicked.

Uncle Jeremy rose in a similar state of panic while Aunt Dana went to summon the nurse in charge.

I stood frozen, watching Uncle Jeremy console my dad. “Yes, Charlie. Please calm down. I give you my word. The engagement will happen tomorrow just as you want it.”

The doctor arrived, and we were bundled out of the ICU. After ten minutes, the doctor emerged to inform us about Dad’s stable condition. “I won’t allow any more visits until his condition improves.”

Uncle Jeremy dropped me home.

“We’ll go shopping for the rings and dress, Anacá. I’ll arrange a small engagement gathering in the evening with our close relatives and friends. You can invite Jess and the others. Let’s see how we can fit the shopping trip in tomorrow.”

I nodded at Aunt Dana with a sigh. “Yes, Aunt Dana. Thank you for everything you’re doing for us.”

It didn’t seem like I could avoid it, anyway. Strangely, not once had Josh come over to see my dad’s condition. What did my dad ever see in the *ssh*l*? Or was it only a way to have his parents care for me in my dad’s absence? I didn’t need looking after. Marrying Josh knowingly would be the biggest mistake of my life. I would be far from happy. Didn’t Dad realize that?

After a lonely dinner, I was about to hit the bed when my phone buzzed with a call from Josh. I ignored it and dozed off to sleep. If he had to say something, he could seek me out.

The next day, Dad was in brighter spirits, as if he hadn’t been hospitalized for the last two days. Dr. Doukas discharged him with lots of restrictions that looked like death sentences to me. Everything pointed to one thing.

No stress at all for the patient.

“When is the engagement, Jerry?” It was the first thing my dad asked once we reached home.

“Evening, 6 o’clock. I don’t want you to travel, so we’ve planned it here, in your house, Charlie. Don’t worry, Dana will take care of everything.”

“Fine. I’m so happy things are happening the way Ana and I wanted.” He smiled as I helped him to his room. My heart was in a turmoil now. I wasn’t prepared to host anything at home. The house was in a mess, and there wasn’t much food to feed a gathering. But I couldn’t voice my opinions in front of Dad. Once I had tucked him in, I walked out to face the situation.

“Aunt Dana, what will we feed them? How many guests have you invited? Does Josh know about this?” I was bursting with questions, wondering how they could be so calm about it.

Aunt Dana smiled as she sorted through some shopping bags. I hadn’t found time all morning to go shopping with her. Thankfully, she didn’t need me and brought home a humongous pile of stuff.

“Don’t worry so much. I’ve got this, Anacá. I’ve ordered enough food for around thirty guests. I think it should suffice. Here, check out the rings. Aren’t they beautiful?” She picked up two diamond rings, but I hardly looked at them as realization set in. I was getting engaged to the man I hated the most.

“Yes. Nice,” I said absent-mindedly.

“Here’s the dress I want you to change into.” She handed me a shopping bag and walked out to the kitchen. I noticed the way she avoided answering me about Josh. What was going on? Wasn’t Josh coming over? How would the engagement happen without him?

I changed into the ivory white dress Aunt Dana had bought for me and brushed my hair. Clipping on a pair of sparkling diamond earrings, I applied some makeup and walked out of my room. I could hear the guests in the living room, and my heart raced with apprehension. I wished I could escape the trauma tonight.

I saw Jess rushing towards me, pulling me into a bear hug. “You look so beautiful, Anacá. What’s going on? Where’s the sapphire ring you bought?”

I gaped at her, remembering the ring I had placed on Eros’ finger. I had completely forgotten about him. Did that make me already an engaged woman?

Just then, the doorbell rang, and Aunt Dana sprang to her feet. “That should be my Josh.”

Anacá The door opened, and Josh strode in with a smile, immediately making me wary. Why was he in such high spirits when I was dying a slow death here? He turned to wait for someone outside the door, and I peered out to check who it was. Had he brought Jordynn along with him? It would be such a tremendous insult to my dad and his parents. But mostly, it would be an insult to me.However, instead of Jordynn, it was none other than Eros Nikolaou who walked up the porch and into the house! The moment he came in, his eyes held me captive. I gasped with horror as his fiery gaze burned through my skin. He seemed furious with me, as if I had committed a crime. My glance fell on his finger, and my heart stopped for a second. I could see my sapphire ring still on his finger! I couldn’t breathe. My eyes went up to meet his angry, brooding gaze. However, Josh seemed unaware of the chaos he had invited. Why did he? Couldn’t he just speak to his parents instead? There was a shocked silence all ar

Anacá I was still in a daze after Eros left. All the guests had their dinner and left after an evening of enjoyment. It was torture for me to answer their questions. Jess helped a lot, and I could see she was struggling to restrain her curiosity in front of so many guests. I got busy with Dad, although he tried hard to show he was normal.“It’s time for your medicine, Dad. Let’s go to your room.” Uncle Jeremy helped me escort Dad to his room. Ever since Eros left, I felt too embarrassed to face Josh’s parents. They might be so disappointed in their only son. He vanished without giving them a clue about his plans, embarrassing them in front of their friends and relatives.Jess left the room while I administered the medicines to Dad.After she left, Dad turned to face his best friend and benefactor. “I’m sorry for the way things turned out, Jerry. Eros Nikolaou's POV“Have you informed your father, Eros?” asked my nanny, Theia Stavridis. She had no family and had cared for me like her own, selflessly, for the last thirty-one years. I always looked upon her like a mother and still do. She never left me, even when I outgrew the need for a nanny. Even when I moved out of my dad’s house, she visited me frequently. But today, I sought her help with the wedding preparations. Just as I had expected, my dad, Homer Nikolaou, wasn’t at home. It wasn’t something new. Since the day he had adopted me, he was always absent from my life. But I wasn’t complaining. He was the only one who adopted me when my biological parents dumped me on his doorstep at birth. I still had no idea who my actual parents were. It was the harsh reality of my life. Not that Homer Nikolaou, my dad, loved me. He adopted me for a motive and left me in Theia’s care. He needed an heir to get access to his father, Atlas Nikolaou’s property and businesses. That was the on

Anacá's POVIt was a bad idea to allow him to pack with me. The moment I dumped the dresses he bought for me into the trolley bag, I noticed where his attention was. It was on the matching lingerie that came with the outfits. What was there to look? Wasn’t he the one to buy them for me? But how did he know my size? God! It was so creepy!I was acutely aware of his presence near me. It felt strange to have him in my personal space, in my bedroom. Every time our hands brushed, I jumped. What would I do after the wedding? Would he want me to please him in bed? I panicked, not having thought of it before. Was this a real wedding? Would he claim me as his wife? I had no idea what I was getting into.“There done. Anything else you may need?” He looked around my closet, and I blushed at the mess. What might he think of me?“No. This is all I need for the wedding.” I was bursting with curiosity about his plans. It was necessary to tell him I wasn’t going anywhere with him tonight. My dad need

Anacá's POVMy heart and mind went into overdrive at the prospect of facing him. I wasn’t mentally prepared to face him now. Just when I had thought I would meet him at the altar, he had to unsettle me. Why did he need a first look?“Do we have the time for a first look?”Theia sighed at Eros’s impossible request. “If you decline him, he’ll go crazy, Anacá. He has always been that way since childhood.”I opened and closed my mouth like a goldfish, unable to form words. I wanted to ask her so many things.“Done, ma’am. Do you need anything else?” asked the attendant, who was fixing my veil.I came out of my daze and gazed at my reflection in the mirror. It was strange that the wedding dress fit me perfectly. But how? I hadn’t found the time to try it on even once. The illusion neckline, back, embellished bodice, and swirling full-length a-line silhouette made me look almost ethereal. My mom’s diamond earrings matched the look, and so did the hairdo. With a few tendrils framing my face,

I gave him a hesitant look as his lips drew closer to mine. My heart stopped for a minute as I waited for him to claim my lips before everyone. With pin-dropped silence in the chapel, I was sure my heartbeats could be heard loud and clear.Unable to control my heartbeats, I closed my eyes and waited. A feathery peck at the corner of my mouth was all I felt, and we were announced as man and wife!I opened my eyes in confusion. Was that all? He pulled me out of the chapel and waited at the backside to greet the guests one by one as they left. Afterwards, they all gathered and threw rice at us, as was customary. I noted the tears of happiness in Dad’s eyes and smiled back at him.We left the church premises and entered the main building. With my heart pounding in my chest, I was still in a state of daze. Did he think he could get away with that? He hadn’t bought me. I was in this only for my dad. Or with all his riches, Eros Nikolaou could go fu*k himself! She was after my money and the luxurious life I could offer her. But I wasn’t one to be fooled by her lies. Unknown to her, I had seen her with Victor entering a hotel room while still claiming to love me. It had brought me to my senses. The bitch was desperate to get into our family.“It makes no difference to me, Eros. I know you don’t love her. You’re gonna sleep around, anyway. Then why not with me?” She gripped the lapels of my tuxedo to pull me towards her.I eased her grip and shoved her backwards, this time not gently at all. Anacá“Mmm! This is too good, Aunt Dana. I missed your meatballs so much.” I couldn’t help but close my eyes and chew, blocking out Josh’s scowling face opposite. I had agreed to stay back for Aunt Dana and Uncle Jeremy. They had done much for me, and I was indebted to them. But Josh seemed to get other ideas. I didn’t bother talking to him. So, he sat there sulking and glaring at me all the time. “Do you want to learn? You can make them for your husband. Do you know it’s a sure-shot way to win a man’s heart!” chuckled Aunt Dana. I opened my eyes, surprised to hear her joke in front of her crazy son. “Oh!” My cheeks were stained with color. Uncle Jeremy laughed too, while Josh glared daggers at me and his mom. “I’m sure she has touched his heart. Or he wouldn’t have pursued and married her!”“I don’t believe this! Are you supporting the man who has destroyed my career?” Josh rose in a fit of rage. “No, son. We’re just discussing Anacá’s husband. You have no reason to overreact,

Anacá “I’m speechless! How did you convince Dad so easily? I had been trying for the last couple of years.” Eros drove away from his family mansion, looking flustered. “I hardly tried to convince him. All I did was offer to cook a good meal for him. My dad loved my cooking, and I miss feeding him.” I sighed at the memory. “Anyway, the place wasn’t conducive to his mental and physical well-being, Eros. There was so much toxicity, it was suffocating me.” I pondered over Acacia’s warning. Should I inform Eros about my hunch? I knew his extended family was planning something against him.“Yes, I know. That’s the reason I rarely come here. But this time, the situation was worse. So, did anyone insult you in my absence?” He glanced at me before steering the car onto the main roads. “No. Only Acacia warned me this would be the last time I could look around the mansion. She said that soon the house would belong to your uncle. I have a feeling they’re planning something against you, Eros.”

Why don’t you apply at other companies?” I had no wish to induct him into my business. I would have avoided it if Dad hadn’t been so adamant. But with dad supporting them, I had no say in the matter. Victor had been trying to convince me for the last forty minutes in my dad’s study. It made me feel suffocated. Why couldn’t he get the idea?He gave me a shocked look. “Do you expect a Nikolaou to go begging others for a job? We are one of the top business families in the country, bro. Wouldn’t it tarnish your reputation?”I shook my head. “Nope. I’m an open-minded guy. Applying for jobs isn’t begging. With your qualifications, you’re serving a company, helping a business in return for money. It’s better than bothering others for money. That’s begging.” I coul

AnacáThe door opened, and a uniformed staff greeted us. “Mr. Nikolaou is waiting for you in the great room.”Eros led me down the grand foyer towards the lavishly decorated great room. Everything about the villa was exotic and over the top. It was quite suffocating, hardly the home I’d like to live in. Thankfully, it wasn’t my home. Eros had built his own private sanctuary for us. He seemed the most sensible of the lot.His grip on my hand was so tight it hurt. Why was he crushing my hand? Maybe he was stressed. It was normal, given the circumstances he was in. Even I was stressed. I couldn’t wait for this ordeal to get over. Would I stay in Eros’s life as his wife by the end of the day?Relax, Anacá.Breathe.I must trust my husband. He promised me that no one could separate us.Voices echoed around us as we entered the lavish great room. I tried hard to remain calm at all costs. The whole family seemed to have gathered here. I thought you had left.” The fear in his eyes was clearly visible, and it felt good to know he wanted me to stay with him.“I went to grab a bite. After the way she insulted me, I had no wish to tolerate her.” I felt a little foolish for reacting to Acacia.“Oh, the food I ordered was for you. Why didn’t you have it?”“She snatched it from me.”Eros rolled his eyes in exasperation. “Anacá, you had the right to throw her out. You’re not just my PA. You’re the owner of Emerald as well. You should know and understand your rights.”My heart filled with an overwhelming urge to hug him. Did he really consider me the owner of his business? I hadn’t expected him to. “Oh, I am?” I couldn’t stop the urge any longer. Was he for real? We hadn’t been married for even a month, and he had already declared me the owner of his business. And then she licked her lips, her nervous gaze dropping to mine. I lost control. “Anacá,” I whispered her name almost like a prayer. “Yeah?” There was a shyness in her eyes that made my stomach tighten with arousal. I knew she wanted the kiss as much as I did. “Let me complete what we started earlier. I can’t sleep.” I could see the hot flush creep up her body, staining her cheeks and neck. It made me warm too, and my co*k responded instantly. “And what do you want to complete?” She tried hard to appear calm, but her hot breath came in gasps while her heart thumped wildly against her chest. Then how did this miracle happen? “I’m sure this has nothing to do with me, Eros. It’s your hard work that has paid off.” Maybe his dad didn’t have the heart to disown him. I was sure it had nothing to do with me. “I disagree. Dad had come prepared. If he disliked you, he would have shown his disapproval. He wouldn’t have transferred the business to my name. Instead, he would have asked me to get rid of you. He’s quite stubborn and difficult to please when you try. I was glad Eros cleared the misunderstanding on my part. “We’ll leave, bro. Are you staying?” asked Uncle Enriquez. “Yes. I want to talk to Eros. You can go ahead. Eros will see you off.” They left, and Eros went downstairs to see them off. I felt acutely aware of his dad’s shrewd eyes watching me intently. “Come here, Anacá.
