Avril's POV

"I've made up my mind, Marcus."

I stood by the lake, looking at my own reflection in the water, my gaze dim.

As it turned out, making the most important decision in my life didn't require that much hesitation after all.

"Avril… are you really willing to be my mate? Are you going to accept my proposal?"

Marcus Howler's voice was deep and firm on the other end of the call.

I felt a sudden ache in my heart. As my tears began trickling down, I nodded lightly and said, "Yes, I am."

"Avril, you're the most perfect mate the Moon Goddess has bestowed upon me. I fell in love with you the first time I laid eyes on you, and I vowed that you'd be the only one who'd ever be my Luna."

My heart skipped a beat, and a bright smile spread on my lips.

"Give me two weeks, Marcus. I'll sort out everything here and then come over to you."

"Alright. I'll be waiting."

After I hung up, my Alpha dad, Jason Talbot, suddenly appeared behind me.

"Avril."

He cleared his throat a little awkwardly and said, "Layla has a weak body. Your room gets a lot of sunlight. How about you two switch rooms for a few days?"

I didn't answer him. Instead, my gaze fell on my stepmother, Velma Fenwick, and my stepsister, Layla Talbot, behind him.

Velma said, "It's fine, Jason. We don't have to trouble Avril about it."

Layla also lowered her gaze and spoke in a weak voice. "I'll be fine, Dad. There's no need to upset Avril just for my sake."

"You're both my daughters. There's nothing to be upset about with each other."

After he was done speaking, Dad then looked at me sternly and said, "You're the elder sibling, Avril. You should be more considerate and understanding."

I stared blankly at Dad. He was someone who used to transform into his giant silver wolf form, carry me on his back, and take me to the grasslands to watch the sunset in the evenings.

Dad felt a little uncomfortable as I kept staring at him.

"Fine. If you're not willing to switch, then I'll just let Layla take the room next to yours."

Dad had changed ever since he found his new Luna. He no longer doted on me or put me first in everything. Instead, he began doting on Layla, who didn't even share a single drop of blood with him.

He never used to be able to say a harsh word to me, but now, he frequently scolded me for being inconsiderate and not being loving enough toward Layla.

I thought that I would suffer because of heartbreak. I thought that I would break down.

However, I didn't. I never even shed a single tear.

I simply nodded calmly and said, "I'll do it, Dad. I'll swap rooms with her."

There were only two weeks left before I'd finally leave Northpine Woods forever anyway. It didn't matter which room I used anymore.

He managed to pull through, but he remained in a coma and never woke up.Meanwhile, Eric stayed for the entirety of the ceremony. For some reason, Heather never blocked him on social media, so he could practically watch the entire ceremony through her online posts, stories, and reels. Before the ceremony, he'd already found out that Avril's new mate was Marcus Howler. He was Avril's senior from her college days, and he was a very outstanding wolf whom she admired a lot.Back then, Eric and Avril had still been in the early stages o

Avril's POVMy marking ceremony with Marcus took place the following spring.Heather was my only bridesmaid, just as we promised back when we were still in college.I didn't inform any of my friends or relatives in Northpine Woods about my marking ceremony, but somehow, the news got out.Dad and Eric both arrived on the day of the ceremony. The makeup artist was putting my makeup on when they came, and Marcus came in to ask my opinion about them attending.I looked up instinctively and caught sight of myself and my to-be mate in the mirror. My makeup was heavier than usual today, and I looked a whole lot different from how I normally looked—just like the roses that Marcus had especially planted for me in the greenhouse—shy, bashful, and delicate, yet as captivating as ever.Meanwhile, Marcus looked even more handsome than ever in his black haute couture suit.We exchanged glances. And in that instant, we saw the smile in each other's eyes."I don't want to see them," I said.

Yet, Jason, who used to always dote on Layla, didn't even spare her another glance this time.He simply waved his hand dismissively like he was shooing a fly and told the maids to kick Velma and Layla out.Layla still refused to give up even as she approached the castle door. She clung to the doorframe and screamed at the top of her lungs, "Eric Blackclaw! You can't do this to me! You can't! I'm pregnant! You're the father of my pups! You have to take responsibility and mark me!"She screamed so loudly in the end that she looked twisted and deranged like she'd gone completely crazy."Eric?" Jason asked, turning to look at him.Eric felt a wave of nausea. He wanted to laugh, but he couldn't.How could he have ever fallen for a she-wolf as deranged and delusional as her?"Alpha," he said, approaching Jason. "I have never laid a finger on her. I swear I never did.""Good. That's a relief," Jason said, heaving a long sigh of relief before waving his hand at the mother-daughter duo

Sometime later, Avril's neighbor couldn't put up with all the noise Eric was making at the door and came out to see what was going on.He told Eric that Avril had long moved out of the unit next door. Then where could Avril have gone? Was she not in Northpine Woods anymore? Was she ever coming back?If yes, when?Eric didn't know a single answer to any of his own questions. He just had a single thought on his mind, and it was one that filled him with extreme terror. He'd lost Avril for good. He'd probably already lost her forever, completely and utterly.…All of the schemes and slanders that Velma and Layla made against Avril were finally exposed. Even the maids in the Alpha's castle all stood up and spoke well of her.It wasn't until then that Jason finally realized he'd wronged his own daughter the entire time. So, he wasted no time in asking the Alpha King for help to dissolve and break the mate bond he'd formed with Velma.Velma and Layla were a mess on the day they

"I am allergic to rose oil! Dad knows about it! And Avril was the one who told the maids to smother my bed in rose oil! Dad was the one who found out about it…" Layla exclaimed, crying pitifully as she nursed her stinging cheek."You're still trying to lie about it!" Eric roared, suddenly stepping forward and grabbing her by her collar. He tightened his hold on her, lifting her up. And since he was very tall, Layla was almost lifted off the ground."E-Eric… let go… I can't breathe…"Eric looked down at her, his handsome face gradually souring."Did you forget, Layla, that the perfume you're using is Avril's favorite scent, with the main ingredient being rose oil? I bought her many bottles of rose perfume in the past because of how much she likes the scent of roses. I'd just forgotten about it later on…"Eric suddenly let out a self-deprecating laugh.Indeed, he'd forgotten too many things. He'd forgotten Avril's devotion to him all these years and how deep her feelings for him h

  • A Rose That Refuses to Die   Chapter 14

Eric's mind was filled with the last look that Avril gave him before she turned and left. It was calm, collected, and devoid of any emotion. It seemed like she saw him as nothing more than a stranger—an insignificant passerby in her life. The moment he recalled Avril's gaze, Eric suddenly stood up. But just as he was about to go out, Layla suddenly pushed the door open and entered."Eric?"She was still as beautiful and delicate as ever. Her pretty, almond-shaped eyes were always bright and glistening, and she looked like she could burst into tears at any moment. It was easy for anyone to think that she'd just been teased or bullied by someone."Why did you drink so much again? You're going to complain about a headache again tomorrow, aren't you?"She went over to him and hooked her arm around his while speaking in a soft, gentle tone.Eric was just about to speak when he suddenly caught a whiff of the familiar scent again. He felt his heart skip a beat. His hand, which he'd me
