Damien’s POV

Celeste’s car disappeared down the road, swallowed by the city lights, and yet—I couldn’t move. A strange feeling churned in my chest, something restless and unfamiliar. It seemed to be eating me up, little by little.

There’s something different about her now. She’d changed.

I had known it the moment she stood before me, her voice steady, her eyes cold. This wasn’t the same woman who had once clung to me, who had loved me with a devotion so unwavering it suffocated me.

That Celeste… was slipping away.

A sudden pang of raw panic struck deep, as if something irreversible had just happened—something I couldn’t fix, no matter how much I wanted to.

Just then, I heard a sob that disrupted my thoughts and the rising emotion within me.

"Damien…"

Genevieve’s choked sob snapped me out of my thoughts.

I turned to find her cradling her wrist, her eyes shimmering with tears as she winced in pain.

"It hurts," she whimpered. "Celeste—she… she grabbed me so hard… Look, it’s completely

Damien’s POVI turned around sharply, my body still coiled and ready to strike. To my shock, the person who’d stepped in was none other than my own private detective. Anton Shaw. His trench coat was half-unbuttoned, and his expression was taut with forced calm. His eyes flicked quickly between me and the terrified concierge.“That’s alright,” he repeated, stepping in. “We’ll take it from here. Thank you.”“What the hell are you doing?” I hissed under my breath, jaw clenched so tight it ached. He gripped my arm—firm but not aggressive. Containing me. Like he’d been waiting for this.“I’ve been shadowing you since you stepped into the building,” he muttered, voice low. “I had a feeling you’d pull something like this. You always go off-script.”I shook him off. “Because the script doesn’t work fast enough. That guy upstairs—he’s the one from the video. I saw him.”“I know,” Anton said tightly. “And I’m already working on it.”I don’t have time to wait,” I snapped. “This isn’t some corp

Damien’s POVMy blood surged as my eyes followed him across the lobby. I recognized him at once. The bastard in that video. What the hell is he doing here?My blood surged.I stood up so fast my coffee nearly spilled. My hands clenched at my sides as I moved to follow in a discreet manner. He didn’t seem to be in a hurry at all, but he was headed toward the elevators. I needed to act quickly. But just as I rounded the corner of the seating area, a family of four came bustling in front of me. Two little kids darted in front of me with ice cream cones in hand, their laughter slicing through the lobby’s hush. The mother called out a warning, the father tried to herd them toward the check-in desk, and I was forced to halt."Excuse me," I muttered tightly, trying to weave through.Too late. The elevator dinged. He stepped in.But for a brief second—just before the doors slid shut—I caught a clearer view of his face. Not a full profile, not even a direct glance. Just enough of a turn to

Celeste’s POVThe request popped up on my screen just after midnight.[AnonymousUser413 has requested a private meeting. Time: TBD. Location: TBD. Will you accept?]I stared at it for a long moment. My breath came slow and shallow. A thrill of adrenaline flickered in my veins. She wants to meet. Not just trade cryptic messages from the safety of a screen. She wants to find out who knows her secret.I didn’t need to ask who it was. My gut screamed it. Genevieve. Who else would use an anonymous burner account and suddenly want a face-to-face the moment the posts started getting traction?Still, I didn’t click accept. Not yet. This had to be handled carefully. Before launching this entire digital trap, I’d hired a powerful hacker—someone who’d worked with whistleblowers and knew how to make people vanish online. Every trace of my activity was masked behind layers of encryption, rerouted through ghost servers and VPNs. I made sure nothing could lead back to me.My eyes shifted back to the

Celeste’s POVMy fingers hovered over the mousepad, cold with anticipation. A new message notification blinked on the screen—an anonymous account, newly registered, no profile picture. No posts. No bio.Harper leaned over my shoulder. “That’s not Genevieve.”I shook my head, lips twitching into the beginnings of a smile. “Exactly.”Harper raised an eyebrow. “You think it’s her alt?”“Who in their right mind would use their real account to respond to something that could burn them alive?” I whispered, almost giddy. “She took the bait.”I clicked the message open.[AnonymousUser413: I saw your post. I was at Rosehill too. Are you really one of us?]I typed slowly, deliberately.[JordanG87: That depends. How much do you remember from that night?]Three dots blinked. Typing. Then paused.[AnonymousUser413: The fire. The screaming. Someone said it was an accident, but I heard it was set. Do you know if that’s true? Do you have proof??]Harper straightened. “She’s fishing.”“Or she’s despe

Damien’s POVI had been waiting for days.My phone lit up more times than I could count, but none of the messages mattered—unless they were from Anton Shaw, my investigator. Finally, today, it came. The call I’d been waiting for."Got something," Shaw said, cutting straight to the point. His voice had that clipped edge he only used when things were serious. "Been tracking Genevieve like you asked. Surveillance footage, front desk logs, staff interviews. It took time, but we pieced it together."I sat up straighter in my chair, heart already pounding. "Get to the point. Talk."“She usually stays in her apartment and rarely goes back to the family estate,” Shaw said. “But here’s what’s strange—every now and then, she slips in and out of the Rothwell Hotel. No fixed schedule. Not for events or parties. Always discreet, always alert. Like she’s meeting someone she doesn’t want anyone to know about.”My brow furrowed. That name rang a bell."It’s about four blocks from the old museum dist

Damien’s POVThe sharp knock on my door didn’t surprise me.Rob never knocked twice.I didn’t move from the couch, still half-sprawled across the edge of my Italian leather sectional. The glow cast shadows across the stack of documents fanned across my lap. No scotch tonight. No cigar smoke. Just the quiet weight of silence and too many thoughts.“Are you alive here or just marinating in scotch fumes?” Rob called out.The door creaked open, and he stepped into the warm, low-lit expanse of the living room—glass decanters untouched, jazz humming faintly from built-in speakers. It wasn’t what he expected. He stopped cold. “Holy shit,” he said slowly. “No bottle. No glass. No record player spinning some sad Miles Davis. Are you actually sober?”“Unfortunately.”He stepped further in, staring like I’d grown a second head. “And reading. Like… pages. This hasn’t been you for a very long time. Are you sick?”I didn’t answer.Rob squinted at the stack on my lap. “ That looks like a full-blown

Celeste’s POVHarper’s words hit me like a slap I hadn’t braced for.“Maybe he’s not such a bad guy?”My jaw tightened. Slowly—almost involuntarily—my face stiffened into something unreadable. But underneath, heat surged.I stared at her, disbelieving. “What’s that supposed to mean?”Harper blinked, surprised by the sudden edge in my tone. “I just meant… after everything today. He helped you.”“Should I forgive him, then?” I cut in, my voice rising. “Just like that? Let’s all forget the lies, the gaslighting, the betrayal—because today he showed up and played hero?”She held up her hands. “Whoa. No. That’s not what I’m saying.”“Because let me remind you, Harper—he left me when I needed him most. Believed someone else over me. Repeatedly.”“I get that, Celeste,” she said, her voice steady. “But Damien’s not Genevieve. I’m not excusing what he did. I’m just saying… maybe he’s trying.”The silence between us was loud.“I’m just tired,” I muttered. “Tired of everyone acting like he’s som

Celeste’s POVEverything happened so fast. One second, the man was lunging forward like a mad dog, spitting threats, eyes wild and unblinking—and the next, a fist came flying out of nowhere, landing with a sickening crack against his jaw.The man staggered backward, crashing into a chair that screeched violently across the floor before tipping over.I gasped. My brain struggled to catch up.Michael Lancaster—Genevieve’s brother—stood in front of me, chest rising with calm precision. His stance was loose but alert, like he could land another hit without breaking a sweat. He shook out his hand once, then looked down at the man now groaning on the floor. “You're done throwing tantrums, or do you need another?”“Michael?” I breathed. He glanced back at me and gave a small nod, like this wasn’t the first time he’d shut someone down with a single punch. Probably wasn’t.Harper stood behind him, wide-eyed, holding her phone halfway between her ear and the air. “Okay, uh… never mind, 911. We’

Celeste’s POVI could tell. The kiss left him breathless—exhilarated, even—but that fleeting rush of triumph shattered the instant my hands slammed against his chest. “Damien!” I shouted, my voice sharp with fury.I didn’t hesitate. The slap cracked across his face like thunder. The sound echoed louder than the pounding in my chest. His head jerked to the side, the harsh imprint of my palm blooming red against his cheek. But he didn’t react. No flinch. No curse. No quick, defensive words. He just stood there, lips parted slightly, his breathing ragged—not from pain, but from something else. Something that felt like disbelief. Or heartbreak.“You’re shameless,” I hissed, trembling all over. “Don’t you get it? We’re over. We’ve been over for a long time. I’m already with—”“Don’t,” he cut in, voice low and dangerously calm.I froze. “Don’t what?”He turned his head slowly, eyes finding mine with a look I hadn’t seen in years—haunted, raw, but beneath it… something sharp and feral.“Don
