Celeste’s POV

Since getting out of the asylum, I had been staying at Auntie’s apartment—a modest but familiar space that had become my only refuge. But the moment I pushed open the door, a strange feeling crawled over my skin. Something was off.

I stepped inside cautiously, my fingers tightening around the keys that were always hidden in the plant outside the door. Right there, by the door—were items that didn’t belong to either of us.

A shallow gasp slipped past my lips.

Has someone from that hellish asylum come to take me back?

I swallowed hard, forcing myself to stay calm. My heart pounded against my ribs as I moved carefully toward the living room. And that’s when I saw her.

A middle-aged woman sat comfortably on the couch. She looked up the moment I entered, her warm brown eyes meeting mine.

"You must be Celeste," she said with a gentle smile.

I didn’t move. I had no idea who she was, and after everything I’d been through, trust wasn’t something I gave easily.

"Who are you?" My

Damien’s POVThe sharp knock on my door didn’t surprise me.Rob never knocked twice.I didn’t move from the couch, still half-sprawled across the edge of my Italian leather sectional. The glow cast shadows across the stack of documents fanned across my lap. No scotch tonight. No cigar smoke. Just the quiet weight of silence and too many thoughts.“Are you alive here or just marinating in scotch fumes?” Rob called out.The door creaked open, and he stepped into the warm, low-lit expanse of the living room—glass decanters untouched, jazz humming faintly from built-in speakers. It wasn’t what he expected. He stopped cold. “Holy shit,” he said slowly. “No bottle. No glass. No record player spinning some sad Miles Davis. Are you actually sober?”“Unfortunately.”He stepped further in, staring like I’d grown a second head. “And reading. Like… pages. This hasn’t been you for a very long time. Are you sick?”I didn’t answer.Rob squinted at the stack on my lap. “ That looks like a full-blown

Celeste’s POVHarper’s words hit me like a slap I hadn’t braced for.“Maybe he’s not such a bad guy?”My jaw tightened. Slowly—almost involuntarily—my face stiffened into something unreadable. But underneath, heat surged.I stared at her, disbelieving. “What’s that supposed to mean?”Harper blinked, surprised by the sudden edge in my tone. “I just meant… after everything today. He helped you.”“Should I forgive him, then?” I cut in, my voice rising. “Just like that? Let’s all forget the lies, the gaslighting, the betrayal—because today he showed up and played hero?”She held up her hands. “Whoa. No. That’s not what I’m saying.”“Because let me remind you, Harper—he left me when I needed him most. Believed someone else over me. Repeatedly.”“I get that, Celeste,” she said, her voice steady. “But Damien’s not Genevieve. I’m not excusing what he did. I’m just saying… maybe he’s trying.”The silence between us was loud.“I’m just tired,” I muttered. “Tired of everyone acting like he’s som

Celeste’s POVEverything happened so fast. One second, the man was lunging forward like a mad dog, spitting threats, eyes wild and unblinking—and the next, a fist came flying out of nowhere, landing with a sickening crack against his jaw.The man staggered backward, crashing into a chair that screeched violently across the floor before tipping over.I gasped. My brain struggled to catch up.Michael Lancaster—Genevieve’s brother—stood in front of me, chest rising with calm precision. His stance was loose but alert, like he could land another hit without breaking a sweat. He shook out his hand once, then looked down at the man now groaning on the floor. “You're done throwing tantrums, or do you need another?”“Michael?” I breathed. He glanced back at me and gave a small nod, like this wasn’t the first time he’d shut someone down with a single punch. Probably wasn’t.Harper stood behind him, wide-eyed, holding her phone halfway between her ear and the air. “Okay, uh… never mind, 911. We’

Celeste’s POVI could tell. The kiss left him breathless—exhilarated, even—but that fleeting rush of triumph shattered the instant my hands slammed against his chest. “Damien!” I shouted, my voice sharp with fury.I didn’t hesitate. The slap cracked across his face like thunder. The sound echoed louder than the pounding in my chest. His head jerked to the side, the harsh imprint of my palm blooming red against his cheek. But he didn’t react. No flinch. No curse. No quick, defensive words. He just stood there, lips parted slightly, his breathing ragged—not from pain, but from something else. Something that felt like disbelief. Or heartbreak.“You’re shameless,” I hissed, trembling all over. “Don’t you get it? We’re over. We’ve been over for a long time. I’m already with—”“Don’t,” he cut in, voice low and dangerously calm.I froze. “Don’t what?”He turned his head slowly, eyes finding mine with a look I hadn’t seen in years—haunted, raw, but beneath it… something sharp and feral.“Don

Celeste’s POVDamien’s expression darkened, lines etching into his forehead. I stared at him, my voice rising before I could stop myself. “So the Lancasters have become corrupt. Bought silence. Covered up a fire. What about you, Damien?”His gaze flicked to me, startled.I took a step closer, fury tightening in my chest. “Are you one of them?”He didn’t answer right away.“Even if you’re trying to protect her,” I continued, trying to keep a steady voice, “don’t waste your time. I’m not backing down. Not this time.”His jaw tensed. Silence settled between us.I took a step back, arms crossed, needing the space even though my chest ached.“That’s not why I’m here,” he said softly. I narrowed my eyes. “Then why?”“I came because I was worried,” he said, a little more firmly now. “Because you’ve been disappearing. Leaving early. Coming back late…”My eyes widened as I gasped. “You’ve been spying on me all this time?!”“Wait, it’s not like what you’re thinking,” he went on. “I know you w

Celeste’s POV“You’re the murderer?!” I shouted, rage exploding in my chest as I hurled myself at him.My fists were clenched, my vision clouded with anger, and I didn’t care if I looked unhinged—I was ready to tear the truth out of him if he wouldn’t give it willingly. But Damien's arm shot out and caught me around the waist, holding me back. “Let’s hear what he has to say first,” he said, his voice steel wrapped in calm.John looked at us both like a cornered animal. His hands trembled violently. “I—I didn’t mean for any of this to happen!”“You admitted you brought the accelerant,” Damien said darkly. “Start talking.”John crumpled in on himself, shoulders sagging like the burden of it all had finally cracked him open. “It wasn’t mine! I mean—it was, but only because someone gave it to me.”My heart pounded. “What are you talking about?”“My friend,” he said, eyes darting as if hoping someone else would jump in and rescue him. “He works in mechanical repair. Greasy jobs. Dangerous

Celeste’s POV“Accelerant?” I repeated, confused. But the word had a different effect on John crumpled on the ground—it made him recoil like he’d just touched fire. His eyes darted to Damien with wide-eyed panic, and for a second, he actually looked like he’d stopped breathing.“I—I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he stammered. “I didn’t see anything like that. I just—”“Don’t lie,” Damien cut in sharply. “You saw the containers, you knew exactly what it was—and now you're scared someone will find out you kept quiet.”“Stop it!” John barked, hands shaking. He shoved himself up and tried to bolt. But Damien didn’t allow it.His foot came down fast and hard, sweeping the man’s legs out from under him. John hit the pavement with a grunt, his face twisted in pain.“You’re not going anywhere,” Damien growled.John let out a guttural groan, clutching his side as he curled tighter into himself, his face contorted in agony.I couldn’t wait to ask Damien— What accelerant is he talking

Celeste’s POVDamien stood in front of me like a barrier. Calm, composed… but I could feel the tension radiating off of him. Then he turned his head slightly, his voice low but laced with steel.“Are you hurt?”I blinked, stunned. My mouth parted, but I couldn’t find the words. How did he even know I was here? Before I could ask, he’d already shifted his gaze forward again. No explanation. No time.John’s eyes darted wildly between us. When he saw Damien’s face, he froze. He clearly realized this man wasn’t someone he could intimidate or outrun. He wasn’t getting away today. He was like a rat in a cage it couldn’t escape, with a burst of false bravado. “Y-you better back off!” he barked, voice cracking. “I’ll—I’ll call the cops, you hear me?!”The words tumbled out fast and uneven, more panic than threat. He stared at us, eyes shifting nervously to Damien—wary, like he knew one wrong move might get him hurt. Suddenly, he turned on his heel, desperate to flee. But Damien moved like a s

Celeste’s POV“…Hello?”The voice on the other end was rough. Dry. Like gravel dragged across pavement.I steadied myself. “Hi, Mr. John Deaks? My name is Celeste Monroe. I’m sorry to call out of the blue, but I was told you might be able to help me.”A pause. Wariness instantly crept into the silence.“I’m looking into what happened at Rosehill Orphanage,” I continued carefully. “I’m just trying to understand—”“I don’t know what you’re talking about! You’ve got the wrong guy.” The man blurted, and then—CLICK.The line went dead.I stared at my phone, stunned.I tried calling back immediately.Nothing.The number was still active, but now it wouldn’t even ring. Straight to voicemail. He was cutting me off, for some strange reason. I stood in the middle of the room, the quiet pressing against my skin like fog.Just hearing the word orphanage had made him panic. Not hesitate nor deny calmly. He knew something.Something he didn’t want to say and was terrified to say.My fingers tighte
