Celeste’s POV

My eyes fluttered open, and the sunlight immediately blinded me. For a moment I didn’t know where I was. My leg throbbed, my throat was dry, and every breath felt like swimming up from the bottom of a dream.

Then I saw him.

Sitting beside the bed, elbows on his knees, head bowed. His hair was tousled, damp at the ends, his shirt open at the collar. For a second I thought I was still dreaming — that my mind, desperate for something familiar, had conjured him out of memory.

Nico’s POVHarry Jones stood near the edge of the crowd, posture relaxed, hands loosely clasped behind his back as if he were taking in a pleasant afternoon instead of stepping onto ground that clearly wasn’t meant for him. He wore a light jacket, neutral colors, nothing flashy. The kind of man who knew how to blend in—and still command attention. Before I could move, Martha stormed past me.Her reaction was immediate and visceral, like a wire pulled too tight finally snapping.“What the hell are you doing here?” she demanded, planting herself directly in front of him. Her voice was loud enough to demonstrate her fury, but luckily, with all the noise around, it didn’t draw attention. Harry didn’t flinch. He looked at her calmly, almost mildly, and even had the nerve to chuckle. “I’m here to enjoy the day,” he said evenly. “Like everyone else.”Martha let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh. “Don’t lie to me. I told you to stay away from us. From my daughter. From this place.”“I remembe

Damien’s POV“Who sent you?” I asked the man calmly.Silence.I nodded once. “Search him.”One of the guards moved in, efficient, professional. The man stiffened but didn’t resist as pockets were checked, jacket patted down, shoes examined. No weapon turned up—not on his body, anyway. No stolen items. No tools. No panic.“He’s not a thief,” the guard murmured. “But he had a knife with him earlier.” One of the other guards showed it to me. “Got it.” “Good.”“Phone,” the guard added a second later, holding it up. Cheap. Black. No cracks. No identifying marks.A burner.“Anything else?” I asked. The guard hesitated, then reached inside the man’s inner pocket again and pulled out a thin plastic card.I took it from him.At first glance, it was nothing. Clean. Minimalist. A white access badge with a generic logo and a name printed in neat, corporate font. The kind you see clipped to belts in airports and glass offices all over the world.GLOBAL STRATEGY & LOGISTICSConsulting | Risk | In

Celeste’s POV“Tell me again why the goat magnet was necessary,” I said as we stepped back inside the shop.“Because,” Damien replied solemnly, closing the door behind us, “one day you’ll open your fridge, see it, and remember that you survived this phase of your life with impeccable taste.”I snorted. “Impeccable taste is not shaped like a goat.”The shop greeted us with a hush that felt almost reverent. The lights were dimmed, soft pools of gold reflecting off freshly cleaned floors. Outside, through the glass, I could still make out the silhouettes of the bodyguards, relaxed but alert.Peaceful.Almost suspiciously so.“I like it quiet like this,” I murmured, setting my bag down. “It feels like the space is… breathing.”Damien smiled. “It’s yours. It’s allowed to breathe.”We were still riding the warmth of the afternoon—the hilltop town, the laughter, the almosts and not-quites that had wrapped themselves around my chest and stayed there. I felt lighter than I had in days. Then I

Nico’s POVMusic carried across the fields, upbeat and carefully curated, while laughter rose and fell in bursts as families streamed through the gates. Kids tugged their parents toward the paddocks, eyes wide at the sight of horses already saddled and waiting. Staff moved fast but smiling, shirts crisp, radios crackling with updates that sounded calmer than they felt.Controlled chaos.Exactly how Martha liked it.I stayed in motion—checking fence lines, rerouting foot traffic, stepping in when a horse got restless or a volunteer froze. If I stopped, even for a second, my thoughts would catch up to me. And I couldn’t afford that. Not today.“Ride line’s backing up near the east corral,” someone called.“I’ve got it,” I said, already moving. That’s when I heard her voice again. “Nico!”I didn’t slow down.“Nico,” Soline repeated, closer this time, her voice tight, pitched low enough to sound private even with the noise around us.I turned sharply near the supply shed. “Not now.”She

Genevieve’s POVHazel didn’t walk into the library. She came straight for me.There was no hesitation this time, no scanning the room, no uncertainty. She knew exactly where I would be—because she’d been here before. I felt it in the way her eyes locked onto mine the second she stepped through the doors, sharp and furious, as if she’d been carrying this moment with her all day.The doors slammed hard enough that a few heads turned. A librarian stiffened at the front desk. Someone coughed pointedly.Hazel crossed the space in long, determined strides.“You,” she hissed, grabbing my arm and pulling me half a step closer. Her fingers trembled, nails biting into my sleeve. “Don’t play dumb. You’re not some librarian. Just tell me the truth now.”A man nearby cleared his throat. I could feel the attention sharpening, curiosity pricking at us like needles.“Take a breath,” I murmured. “You’re causing a scene.”She laughed under her breath, sharp and humorless. “A scene? You dragged me out o

Celeste’s POVBy the time the last worker packed up for the afternoon and the foreman promised to be back early the next day, my shoulders finally dropped an inch.“Come on,” Damien said gently, already holding my jacket. “You need air. And something sweet. Possibly both.”I hesitated, glancing back at the shop—my shop—half-expecting something else to go wrong if I turned my back.He noticed. “It’ll still be here when we get back,” he said. “And I’ve got people watching it like it’s the crown jewels.”I snorted. “That’s not reassuring.”“It should be. I’ve seen how seriously people take shiny things.”That earned a laugh. A real one. And just like that, I let him lead me away. The hilltop town rose slowly before us, all pale stone and narrow streets that twisted like they were keeping secrets. Shuttered windows glowed gold in the late afternoon sun. The air smelled like warm bread, lavender, and something fried that immediately made my stomach protest.Damien noticed. Again.“Hungry?
