~~Rain~~

My head pounds like a live band is hosting a concert in there, courtesy of the numerous glasses I had last night. Tony’s restless pacing doesn’t make it any better. My personal assistant has been worked up since news of the scandal broke out this morning.

“The PR team has been working for hours,” he grumbles. “They have taken down all the articles, but new ones keep springing up. This seems like a set up. I’m afraid someone is pulling strings behind the scenes to damage your reputation.”

A groan rips past my throat as I reach for the cup of black coffee on the desk. Tony stops his pacing, watching me raise the cup to my lips.

“What really happened, Mr Manchester?” he asks. “I have never known you to be careless.”

I take a long drag of the drink. He’s right. I have never been careless. Situations like this are to be expected in the corporate world, but it’s never been this serious before. Last night was supposed to be a routine visit to the bar, just a few drinks before going home. I didn’t expect to wake up in a hotel suite this morning, with videos of me with a woman I don’t even know plastered all over the internet.

I massage my temples. “Who is the woman in the video?”

“She’s a Vaughn. We don't know who it is among the four granddaughters yet. They haven’t released any statements.” He leans down towards the desk. “You don’t remember what happened?”

“Not a damn thing.”

I was drugged. That is certain. Who is responsible? The Vaughns? They have no reason to set me up like this. The Manchesters and the Vaughns have maintained a healthy rivalry over the years. They have nothing to gain by doing this.

“And my father?” I look up at Tony. I can imagine Roman Manchester’s face right now, red with fury. The Manchester group is signing a very beneficial merger in a few weeks, and Roman has been extremely careful to prevent any hitches. This scandal will ruin things if not suppressed quickly. “Is there any message from him?”

As if on cue, the door of the office opens. Hargrove Baker, my father’s secretary, walks in.

“Mr Manchester,” he calls. “Your father instructed me to inform you personally. To contain the scandal and ensure the smooth execution of the merger to be signed next month, you’re to get married to the youngest granddaughter of the Vaughn family in two weeks.”

Hargrove delivers the message as casually as he would tell the weather forecast, leaving no room for questions or protest.

“The Vaughns have agreed to the union,” he concludes. “You should get ready for the wedding.” With that, he turns to leave.

“Marriage?” Tony exclaims as soon as we’re alone again. “Isn’t that too extreme?”

A string of curses leave my lips as rage surges through me. I am not surprised about Roman’s decision. That man is the most unpredictable human I know, but it does nothing to quell my anger.

A marriage to a stranger is the last thing I need right now. It goes against the plan I have carefully laid out over the past six months. For as long as I can remember, I have been reminded of why I do not belong in the family. Roman Manchester didn’t need to say the words out loud. The servants understood it. The media understood it. Even the board members knew my place. My brother got all the respect while I got the ridicule.  If I closed a deal, David could have done it better. If I exceeded targets, David could eventually surpass it. If I raked in millions, David could do billions.

It didn’t matter how incompetent he was. He was legitimate, and that was all that mattered.

I didn’t let it get to me in the past. I was content with being in his shadows. Roman made me believe that was how things were meant to be anyway.

Then Ava happened.

In a fit of rage, I sweep my hand through the table, sending everything on it crumbling to the floor. Hot coffee scalds my skin, but I ignore the searing pain.

David had taken Ava from me. I didn’t think I'd lose her just because I am illegitimate, but I should have known better. The memory of her breaking the news to me in that restaurant six months ago is still green. I remember how much she cried, how she had trembled so badly.

“It was my father’s dying wish,” she had said, pulling her hand from mine.. “I’m sorry, Rain. You and I won't work.”

She got engaged to David a month later. That was my breaking point.

I have worked hard since then to be acknowledged by my father. Everything has been going according to plan. All I need is a little more time…

But that Vaughn granddaughter has ruined it.

A bitter laugh leaves my throat as I realise my dilemma. If I do not marry just as my father wants me to, he’ll have me disowned. If I do, my chances of getting Ava back will be slimmer.

“Tony.” My voice is way too calm for how I feel inside. “What do you know about this Vaughn woman?”

My ever -attentive personal assistant has pulled up her file. He clears his throat. “Her name is Selene Vaughn. She manages a small subsidiary of the Vaughn enterprises. She has no social media presence and doesn’t appear in any family photos online.”

He pauses and exhales. “Rumours have it that she’s an outcast in her family. Her father is deceased, mother is admitted in a mental hospital. She’s pretty much a ghost.”

A scoff rips past my throat. The unfavoured member of a family got involved in a scandal with Manchester. How convenient! Did she plan this to climb up the social ladder? I was curious about why the Manchesters chose to set me up. Apparently, the estranged granddaughter is behind all this.

I have to give her her flowers. She is smart. She made this happen at a time Roman couldn’t tolerate mistakes.

If only she knows what she has gotten herself into. If she wants a marriage, I'll give her just that. We’ll smile for the cameras and make sure my father secures the damn merger. But the moment it’s over, she will be discarded.

And then I'll finish what I started. Destroy David’s claim to the Manchester empire, take over from him and take back the only person who ever really mattered.

Ava.

~~Rain~~Ava’s lips press against mine, and my brain goes blank. I can’t seem to process what's happening. The alcohol has turned my brain into a hazy fog, and all I can register is the familiar warmth of her mouth against mine, the second of her perfume filling my lungs, and her fingers slipping into my hair.I have kissed Ava more times than I can count. Her lips once helped me get over bad days. This should feel right. But instead, something sharp recoils in my gut.I shove her away with all the strength my drunk hands can muster, wiping my lips with the back of my palm. As a scoff escapes her lips, I squeeze my eyes shut. This was what I wanted. Ava and I, inseparable after being forced apart by circumstances we had no control over. This was the whole point. I got married to Selene so I could get Ava back eventually. I shouldn’t feel this repulsed by an activity we have done over and over in the past. But I can't help it.Because she isn’t asleep. She doesn’t smell like my wife

  • A Scandalous Marriage Deal With Mr Manchester    057: THE HEIRSHIP

~~Ava~~I can’t help the laugh that builds up in my throat. Rain Manchester has never been so miserable, and it gives me joy to see him like this just as much as it makes me surprised. I thought he had a happy life with his lovely wife. Judging from how many glasses he has chugged down in a short time, I can't be more wrong.Rain looks up at me, a frown forming on his face. Irritation flashes on his features, but it’s quickly submerged by the effect the alcohol has on him. I sink onto a nearby stool and beckon to the waiter.“A martini, please.”“And something stronger for me,” Rain chips in. He looks a mess. His hair is all over the place, like he has spent hours running his fingers through them. He shouldn't look this downcast. Just a few days ago, he was acting all lovey dovey with his wife at the gala. He stepped in to defend her in public. One would think they were the ultimate lovers. Why is he here instead of being with her?“Do you have problems at home?” I ask him idly as th

~~Rain~~My hands clench into fists so tight my nails dig into flesh. I had spent yesterday and today running around, putting things together behind the scene to ensure that selene gets out of the mess the scandal created unscathed, yet here she is, finding solace in the arms of another man. For a moment, I stay rooted to the spot, unnoticed by either of them. Then Noah sees me, and the corners of his lips rise upwards in a smirk. He slides his hand around selne’s waist and pulls her closer, running his other hand over her hair. The gesture sends blood rushing to my ears. That bastard is doing this on purpose. She pulls away from him, and they talk for a few seconds. Noah says something that makes her smile before he finally turns to leave. Selene heads towards the house, then stiffens as soon as she sights me. I release a scoff at her expression. She looks like a naughty child who has been caught stealing candy.“What… what are you doing here?” she stutters.Despite the anger c

  • A Scandalous Marriage Deal With Mr Manchester    055: A REWARD HUG

~~Selene~~Another call wakes me up the next morning. But this time, it’s good news. One of the ladies Mary and I met yesterday was on the line with intent to ‘confess’.“Can we meet, Mrs Manchester?” she asks in a timid voice. “I have something to tell you about the scandal Vaughn Beauty is involved in.”“How did you get my number?” I ask, throwing the covers off my body and darting out of the room. My clothes are still in Rain’s. After what happened last night, I don't have the zeal to see him again, but I need my clothes. “Someone gave it to me.”This could be a trap, my subconscious warns. If someone in my inner circle gave her my number, then it could only mean that person has a hand in everything that went down. But trap or not, I have to get to the bottom of this.Rain is nowhere to be found when I get to the bedroom. He’s probably in the gym for his morning workout. I make my way to the closet and shrug on the first dress I can find, making a mental note to have my thing

  • A Scandalous Marriage Deal With Mr Manchester    054: STAY GROUNDED

~~Selene~~I return home to see a truck filled with roses in the yard. The maid surrounds it, taking turns to offload the roses and take them into the mansion. Pamela walks up to me with an exhausted look on her face.“What are these for?” I ask her. She sighs.“Rain had them ordered. I have no idea what they are for.”Without another word, I make my way indoors. I am tired to my bones. The only thing I want to do is go to bed and sleep to get back some energy to brace for the coming days. But when I get in, the flowers are littered everywhere, sending a jolt of irritation through me. The scent is supposed to be nice and soothing. It's overstimulating instead. I ignore the urge to empty my stomach’s content and head upstairs to shower.Minutes later, I have changed into my nightdress when Rain walks in. He has a bunch of flowers in his hand, standing by the door with a smile on his face.“What is this?” I snap in a harsh tone.Rain steps forward, a smile playing on his lips. It’s hal

  • A Scandalous Marriage Deal With Mr Manchester    053: PRONE TO ANGER

~~Selene~~The “victims” deny everything. Three women. The only ones we were able to get a hold of and convince to come for an investigation, they insist that the products caused the rashes on their faces. The skin reactions are so real it’s scary, but I am certain Vaughn Beauty products didn’t cause them. These ladies, however, do not want to hear a word of it.“You should be looking for how to resolve this,” one of them snaps, her expression bitter. “You should investigate your suppliers and ingredients, instead of trying to pin the blame on someone else.”Mary slams her hand down on a table, looking completely exhausted with the spectacle in front of her. “Don’t you understand? We have done our investigation. Our products are fine. We have tested them for any abnormality all morning, but there is none. This can only mean that you either used fake products, or you're trying to frame us. Who is behind this?”“No one,” the woman fires back stubbornly. “You think I don't have t
