FAZER LOGINCHAPTER TWENTY NINE THALIA The door closed a moment after and the entire apartment went so quiet that I could hear the subtle sound of the ventilation system which was running quietly right there in the ceiling. If a pin dropped now, I was sure the sound would reverberate too. A deep sigh left my lips as I sat back down on the sofa with a plop. Though I had always known, deep down, and somewhere underneath everything, that Marcus was the floor. He was not the ceiling. He was not the walls. He was the floor—the base that was simply there so I never had to think about what was below it. Always there to hold me if I ever fell off my high horse with Duke. I had run every risk with Duke and every other calculation in my life on the sole assumption that the floor would hold regardless of what I did above it. Now, I wasn't sure because the floor was gone from my life. I pulled up my phone from my hand bag and began to call Duke who eventually answered the damn phone on t
CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT THALIA Marcus set the gun down on the table between us without a word. My heart was beating fast in a way that told me I could have been a goner now that it was not pointed at me and just placed there, flat against the table, just sitting between both of us, present and acknowledged. The silence in the room just became different, the kind of quiet that made plenty goosebumps crowd around the surface of your skin. “You have two choices, Thalia,” he began to say in that composed voice that had not changed at all. I swallowed in fear. “You can either willingly sign this very papers or you can choose to sign every one of them with my assistance.” Cold shivers ran down my spine at those worss but I didn't move. “Just be well informed that both of your choices would probably end in the same way,” he added, his dark eyes lifting to be staple on my face. He looked at me steadily. “If you want a third option, that is also on the table,” he continued,
TWENTY SEVEN PENELOPE Diane arrived exactly when she said she would. And her punctuality told me something about her before she had even opened her mouth. She came with one camera operator and a small recorder, also no entourage. “Mrs Callahan,” she called me by my name when she came, shaking my right hand with the directness of someone who considered pleasantries shared as a necessary formality alone. Nothing more. I appreciated that immediately. “Thank you for coming,” I told her with a pleasant smile. She nodded. We sat across from each other at the small table near the window. I was silent, watching her as she set up the recorder she brought between us. Then she looked at me when she was done with setting up everything. “Shall we?” she said. I nodded. “Go ahead,” I said. We began after that and she asked me only good questions—not soft, stupid ones that were designed to flatter. Neither was it those aggressive ones that were designed to destabilise. She asked the
TWENTY SIX PENELOPE When Hanna knocked at five past nine in the morning, she was with her small tablet, holing it in one hand alongside a printed list in the other hand. “What’s that?” I asked. “It is from the media. Many of them are sending interview requests in,” she said after she had closed the door and covered the space between us. I watched her approach me. “Ohh,” I mused, leaning back in my chair. “How many are there?” “I have had about seventeen requests sent in since yesterday evening, and just four more today. They came in this morning, just before eight o'clock.” I nodded. “Let me see them.” She stepped forward and placed the list in the table, before me. Then, she took a step back, and waited for me to take it, holding onto her tablet. I leaned forward to pick up the list, and then, I slowly read through it. The names were from outlets that I could recognise—financial columns, business supplements, and even two television programmes that covered investment and
TWENTY FIVETHALIAI had spent the entire day trying to reach Duke—physically, or online, via phone or text—all to no avail. So, I went to his work place with the hopes that he was just busy there and we could see and maybe talk. But I had not even managed to be able to see him, even once, and that was solely because his assistant had turned me away, instantly, at the lobby, when I arrived at his place of work. And his stupid phone? That damn device had gone to voicemail multiple times before I stopped calling. I had gone to the parking lot and sat in my car, outside Blackwood Tower, for more than forty minutes, waiting for him to come down once. But he had not come down. Not even once.Eventually, against my will, after more than six hours of waiting, I had to drive back home with all my fingers firmly gripping the steering wheel tightly until my knuckles became white, and my jaw also set tightly. The apartment was lit when I arrived, and that told me before I had even closed the
TWENTY FOUR PENELOPE “Old geological surveys, that is the main reason," I said with a small sniff, handing his phone back to him. "And a little bit of financial pattern mapping too.” And it was not a lie—not exactly, since I had just simply rearranged a bit of the truth into a fine shape that answered his question without still answering it. His brows raised. “If you manage pack finances as long as I have been doing, you will develop the ability to read land the way other people find it easy to read balance sheets.” Lorcan took the phone, eyes shaking, and looked at me for a moment. “I had been tracking those areas quietly for a while before last night,” I added to hard cement my half truth further. He had a lot to say—I saw it in his eyes, and in the way his lips kept opening and closing without a single word. But, he eventually chose not to push it. Though he did not look entirely settled either because there was still something behind his eyes that had gone to rest
FIVE PENELOPE One moment I was plummeting straight into the horrid darkness below. The next moment I was being pulled up by an invisible force towards a bright light. I gasped as I came to life, sitting afore my makeup table in a pearly white robe. My heart was beating loudly with force as if
FOUR PENELOPE A few minutes after they caught me, they knocked me out cold with a palm to the neck. When I had roused in the boot of a moving car, my wrists were tied tightly behind me. I kept twisting my hands anyway. Not because I thought it would work, but because staying still felt like gi
