Present day…

‘’Asher, I think if we are going to do this you should just be truthful with me. There is no way you can tell me that there is nothing you want out of this.’’
He takes a deep breath. ‘’In order to gain full control of my father’s company, I have to be married. It is just a stupid requirement of his, and he only gave me a year's time to be in the marriage.’’
‘’What? Why didn’t you just tell me the truth in the first place?’’
‘’It was placed in the contract. I never wanted to say it out loud because my father’s terms are quite ridiculous. But he claims that it's to prove to him that I can be a ‘family man.’’
‘’It was?’’
‘’You didn’t read the contract, did you?’’ Asher asks.
I begin to babble, and he gives a curt nod.
‘’Could have sold your soul then and wouldn’t know.’’
‘’How does one sell their soul?’’ I ask.
Asher shakes his head. ‘’The point is, you should have read the contract. And I hope you aren’t planning to back out now.’’
I scoff. ‘’As if I have a choice now and it’s not like you are going to do what the contract says.’’
‘’I’m not bound by a contract, and even so, I’ll keep up this act until I get full control of my father’s company.’’
‘’Could have just been truthful from the start.’’
Asher only shoots me with a look, so I stay silent, because what can I say? This is a done deal. I need the money and my citizenship. Maybe I should just read the contract when I get to his place to see what they really expected of me. Besides, he just happen to leave those parts out when we talked. He could have told me the reason, but remained so tight-lipped about it until now, but then again. Would I have agreed if I knew from the get-go?
“During the days, I’ll be busy with my work, and depending on my schedule, you won’t be able to contact me for hours, but I will get back home at the end of the day.’’
‘’So, why did you choose a random stranger like me, and why didn’t you take a female friend?’’ I ask, trying to make conversation. “I could easily run away with the money I already have or even begin to make ridiculous demands in order to keep my mouth shut.” I try again.
‘’I have my reason for doing things. Besides, if you run, you have plenty to lose and I don't.’’
‘’Oh.’’ I let out.
There is silence in the back of the car again. The driver weaves through the light traffic to get us to where ever this man lives.
I still can’t believe I went through with this crazy plan. I should have run for the hills when Mr. Asher Thomas first brought this to me. I try my best to not think about it but now it is too late to do any kind of thinking. I am now Asher's wife, will be living under his roof and have to abide by his rules, while having to attend to any family matters while pretending to be happy in this fake marriage.
I never stop to think about what I am getting myself into until now. I was too focused on the number of zeros that will be in my account and finally living here without looking over my shoulder. I never stop to think if I and this man had anything in common. I just agreed with his proposal.
Now I doubt we can even have a simple conversation. I know nothing about running a business or the world he lives in.
Soon we pull up outside a large contemporary and my mouth falls open because there is no way he lives here by himself. This place is enormous enough to fit my entire family.
''Welcome to your new home for the next year.''
I turn to Asher with a gulp.
All thoughts leave my mind for a brief second, and I don’t know what to say. Because at this moment, this is real. I am married and I have to be staying here with nowhere else to go because I got kicked out of my apartment the day before my wedding.
‘’We have to sleep in the same room and bed to save face. My family is here often and I don’t want them to find out that this is a sham,’’ Asher explains.
I glance at the driver and the other man which was waiting by the door, that is now helping to unpack our gifts for the trunk.
‘’Don’t worry, they know better than to keep their mouths shut if they want to continue working.’’
With that, Asher turns on his heels and enters the house that smells of furniture polish, home-cooked meals, and other scents that I oddly like. He begins to remove his jacket before turning to me again.
‘’You can relax now. We are safe here and out of wondering ears.’’
I glance over to the man who I took it upon myself to do research on a few days ago, and as it turns out. Asher Thomas is nothing but a brooding playboy and I guess this is the reason why his father wants him to get married, to leave the whorish lifestyle behind.
But the only thing is, neither of us is the other's type. He was too… handsome and I’m sure he will cheat with the supermodels he is used to dating.
Yes, I read that he uses to date miss Heywood Hall, but they had a bitter breakup when he cheated on her with an underwear model from Page Six.
I’m sure his family, mainly his father, will see through this. Especially since I begin from such a poor background and am not used to the fancy, rich life. But maybe if I grew up in money and with a gold spoon in my mouth like Asher, then maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be so bad.
Bright and early the next morning, I get ready for work so I can drown myself in the company’s affairs and get away from what I had done. The fact that I am now a married man kept me awake the entire night, which means the only way to survive this day is to chug two gallons of coffee and have the air conditioning on blast. While still tying my tie, I walk past the room she is in and pause after hearing mumbles coming from inside. I know no one else is in there with her because we are the only two living in this house now. She must be talking to herself. Which is something I notice she does a lot. The only thing I’m curious about is why she is up so early because she doesn’t work. I shake my head and walk away, because why do I even care that much? When I get to work, it is five-thirty, which is much earlier than my normal time. No one else is here as yet except for the doorman who opens the door for me and a cleaning lady who has chunky headphones over her ears. She dances as sh
‘’And what?’’ I ask. She gives me a look. ‘’I can go to prison. You might as well, but a pretty boy like you won’t last long.’’ ‘’Excuse me?’’ “I don’t know, but you have money and can get out of this if Vincent should ever find out about this.’’ “Stop talking,’’ I know that my tone is harsh, but it made her shut up pretty quickly. ‘’Why do you think Vincent will find out about this?’’ ‘’I don’t know, but even so, I think I will only be trouble for you.’’ “You’ll make trouble for me.’’ I laugh. ‘’What kind of trouble are we talking about?’’ When she couldn’t provide an answer, I just laugh. ‘’Mary, you have nothing to worry about.’’ She gives me a look. ‘’What did you just call me?’’ ‘’Mary, that’s your name.’’ ‘’Millie, my name is Millie.’’ She sits down on the sofa and holds her head. ‘’I know that this won’t work.’’ I pinch the bridge of my nose, and these are the type of people you don't commit illegal activities with. ''Millie, I don't think you understand the laws o
I give a small smile when a camera turns my way. The man behind it does something to the lens before snapping several photos of me.This sets me on edge because I know for sure someone will find out that what Asher and I are doing is a sham and I’m sure the government will see my pictures and come searching for me.‘’Are you ready for this?’’ Asher asks.I shake my head. ‘’No, what if someone-’’‘’Stop with the what ifs, everything will be just fine.’’I let out a breath because I know things won’t be, and he doesn’t understand how I feel. I have to be looking over my shoulders ever since I came to this place, while he is basically the king here.‘’Just let me do all the talking unless someone asks you a question,’’ Asher whispers. When we make our way to the podium, that is where more pictures are snapped of us and people begin to fire question after question.‘’Asher, can you tell us about this marriage? How did it come about?’’ one woman asks.‘’Why did you get married?’’ someone e
“Asher, can you confirm if what your wife said is true?’’ Aaron asks. ‘’I don't know what she said,’’ is Asher’s only reply. The next thing I know, Asher is pulling me down the stairs. I try to pull away from him, but his grip is too strong. ‘’Would you let go of me?’’ ‘’Sorry, it's just that I don’t want this to escalate. I know how these reporters can get.’’ ‘’No, I’m sorry. I should have known better than to talk to anyone here.’’ I tell him. Asher stops to look t me. ‘’No, I shouldn’t have let you out of my sight. I know how this place can be. I should have done more to keep you away from Leonard.’’ ‘’That's his name?’’ I ask. ‘’Yes, but don’t worry about it.’’ Asher takes my hand again and begins to lead me to the car when the female he was with earlier stops us. ‘’Asher, don’t tell me that you are leaving.’’ “Yes, sorry, but my wife isn’t feeling too well. Plus, there has been an incident I don’t want her to stick around and be exposed to much of this.’’ Asher nods at
When I disembark the plane, it takes everything in me to not start kissing the ground. `A black SUV pulls up not long after and a handsome man who looks identical to Asher steps. Aside from his good looks, I notice him wearing a cowboy hat, blue jeans, and brown leather boots.‘’Where are we exactly?’’ I ask Asher.‘’Heywood Hall.’’‘’Oh.’’‘’What?’’ he gives me a look.‘’Nothing.’’How can I tell him I know all about his hot girlfriend he cheated on?When we get to where he is leaning on the car and chewing on a twig, a smile breaks out on his face.‘’You must be Angela, Asher’s wife,’’ he says.‘’Her name is Millie and you know this.’’ Asher frowns at him.‘’Oh, right? You have a different woman each week. It is hard to keep up.’’‘’Rich, please don’t start something you can’t finish,’’ Asher warns. He ignores Asher and reaches a hand toward me. ‘’Richard Thomas, but you can call me Rich.’’I look down at his hand because I hope he isn’t expecting me to be nice to him after the lit
I look over at Millie to see that she isn't enjoying herself. She just sits on a bar stool, gazing out into space and not even drinking her drink.I sigh because clearly neither of us is used to the lifestyle of the other. She is too... I don't even know how to explain her behavior.I place my drink down on the side of the pool table and walk over to her.''Would you like to leave?''''Please.'' She nods.''Ok.''When we get into the cool air, I pause on the curb and thought Millie would have done the same, but she foolishly steps into the path of a coming car. If it isn't for quick actions with me pulling her back and the driver swerving to the right. She would have been a goner. She looks up at me, and I squeeze her trembling hand.''Are you ok?''''Yes, thank you.''I continue to hold her chilly hands in mine as we cross the road to the parking lot where the driver is waiting for us.Millie squeezes my hand, and she looks up at me, then quickly looks away and I wonder what that is
The next morning, I roll over and notice that Asher isn’t by my side and I vaguely remember him telling me he has to live with his father for business. I thought it was a dream since it was so late at night. When I go downstairs for breakfast, I see that the table is almost full, with only two spare seats. Asher’s grandfather is reading the morning paper, Rich is sipping from a cup, and their grandmother is breaking an egg. “Good morning,” I say, taking a seat. “Morning,” the grandfather replies without moving the paper from his face. ‘’Good morning dear.’’ The grandmother smiles at me. ‘’Your husband called. He wanted to check in with you, but you were still sleeping,’’ Rich tells me. ‘’Oh, sorry I missed that call.’’ But am I really? I still don’t know what to make of last night, and I think Asher is disappointed in what could have happened, but didn’t. ‘’Sorry you missed it too, I would love to hear what you two have to speak about.’’ Rich gives a smile. I cock my head
‘’Do you love him?’’‘’Why would you ask me that?’’‘’Because I don’t think you do.’’‘’Our relationship isn’t your problem.’’‘’No, but what are you two hiding?’’‘’Why do you think we are hiding something?’’‘’I know my cousin, but since you can’t answer any of my questions. Why not be with me instead? Our relationship can be a lasting one.’’‘’This is something you do? Try to get back at your cousin by sleeping with the women he dates.’’‘’They never seem to mine.’’‘’And you think I would be just like them?’’‘’Just think of it as a game of grabs.’’As we continue to talk more, I realize that Rich is the same thing as Asher. They both have an appetite and desire for attractive women and only lived in the moment. There is something dangerous about it, and though I shouldn’t be talking to him like this made him that much more interesting.‘’So, the question stands, do you want me?’’‘’I’m married to your cousin.’’“That’s not my problem,” Rich replies. “And if you cared that much ab
