If anyone ever approaches you with a ‘proposal’ and offers you a sum of money to marry them, handsome or not, especially if you know nothing about them, just turn and run. Why? Because that is the situation I found myself in now and I’m afraid of being a runaway bride. For one, I have already accepted the first monthly payment with a goofy grin on my face, like the greedy idiot I am. And I have also signed a contract, which I didn’t read so yeah. I’m fucked. An icy chill runs through my body because I am terrified of what was waiting for me behind the doors, which leads to a lush green garden. Maybe it’s better to say who is waiting for me. A man I hardly know. We met only three times, and it was to go over our ‘wedding’ plans.‘’Ready?’’ a voice asked.I look at the wedding planner, wanting to shake my head, but there is no backing out now. Besides, I fear what these overly rich-people will do to me.When the door finally opens, all the attendants there stand up at attention when th

A WEEK EARLIER...______________________________________________________________________________________________________________I stare up at the office building that is situated in the middle of the busy intersection of York Street, which already has a mid-day crowd bustling about.Even though it is the first day of spring, the air is still chilly, so I wear my best outfit. Which is an ugly brown pea coat with dress pants, and I know it won’t be much to impress anyone. Neither will the falsified documents in the one strap big I have across my shoulder. When I finally make it inside and over to the front desk, the young lady there who is popping gum and staring at her phone screen stares up at me as if to ask why am I even bothering to come here.‘’I’m here for an interview,’’ I tell her.She pops her gum and chews it loudly before passing me a lanyard with a visitor’s tag at the end.‘’Your interview is on the last floor,’’ she tells me in a bored tone.I follow her instructions up

Sure enough, just as I slip my shoes on, the doorbell rings with a big balding man standing there.‘’I’m here to take you to dinner,’’ he says. His voice matching his appearance. When I get to the fancy, upscale restaurant, Asher isn’t that hard to miss as he sits by himself at a table by himself, typing away on his phone and oblivious to the stares of the surrounding women. As I walk over to him, he stands and the first thing I notice is the small black box on the table. He follows my eyes, then gestures for me to take a seat. When I do, a waitress comes over with a brilliant smile on her face.‘’Are you ready to order?’’ she asks.Asher motions for me to go first, but with me never been to a restaurant like this before. I say, ‘’why don’t you order for me?’’A look I can’t place my finger on flashes across his face, but he still orders for the two of us.‘’So, why am I here?’’‘’Straight to the point, then,'' he says.Asher opens the box and gazes down at the ring inside.“Think of

Present day… _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ ‘’Asher, I think if we are going to do this you should just be truthful with me. There is no way you can tell me that there is nothing you want out of this.’’ He takes a deep breath. ‘’In order to gain full control of my father’s company, I have to be married. It is just a stupid requirement of his, and he only gave me a year's time to be in the marriage.’’ ‘’What? Why didn’t you just tell me the truth in the first place?’’ ‘’It was placed in the contract. I never wanted to say it out loud because my father’s terms are quite ridiculous. But he claims that it's to prove to him that I can be a ‘family man.’’ ‘’It was?’’ ‘’You didn’t read the contract, did you?’’ Asher asks. I begin to babble, and he gives a curt nod. ‘’Could have sold your soul then and wouldn’t know.’’ ‘’How does one sell their soul?’’ I ask. Asher shakes his head. ‘’The point is, you should have

Bright and early the next morning, I get ready for work so I can drown myself in the company’s affairs and get away from what I had done. The fact that I am now a married man kept me awake the entire night, which means the only way to survive this day is to chug two gallons of coffee and have the air conditioning on blast. While still tying my tie, I walk past the room she is in and pause after hearing mumbles coming from inside. I know no one else is in there with her because we are the only two living in this house now. She must be talking to herself. Which is something I notice she does a lot. The only thing I’m curious about is why she is up so early because she doesn’t work. I shake my head and walk away, because why do I even care that much? When I get to work, it is five-thirty, which is much earlier than my normal time. No one else is here as yet except for the doorman who opens the door for me and a cleaning lady who has chunky headphones over her ears. She dances as sh

‘’And what?’’ I ask. She gives me a look. ‘’I can go to prison. You might as well, but a pretty boy like you won’t last long.’’ ‘’Excuse me?’’ “I don’t know, but you have money and can get out of this if Vincent should ever find out about this.’’ “Stop talking,’’ I know that my tone is harsh, but it made her shut up pretty quickly. ‘’Why do you think Vincent will find out about this?’’ ‘’I don’t know, but even so, I think I will only be trouble for you.’’ “You’ll make trouble for me.’’ I laugh. ‘’What kind of trouble are we talking about?’’ When she couldn’t provide an answer, I just laugh. ‘’Mary, you have nothing to worry about.’’ She gives me a look. ‘’What did you just call me?’’ ‘’Mary, that’s your name.’’ ‘’Millie, my name is Millie.’’ She sits down on the sofa and holds her head. ‘’I know that this won’t work.’’ I pinch the bridge of my nose, and these are the type of people you don't commit illegal activities with. ''Millie, I don't think you understand the laws o

I give a small smile when a camera turns my way. The man behind it does something to the lens before snapping several photos of me.This sets me on edge because I know for sure someone will find out that what Asher and I are doing is a sham and I’m sure the government will see my pictures and come searching for me.‘’Are you ready for this?’’ Asher asks.I shake my head. ‘’No, what if someone-’’‘’Stop with the what ifs, everything will be just fine.’’I let out a breath because I know things won’t be, and he doesn’t understand how I feel. I have to be looking over my shoulders ever since I came to this place, while he is basically the king here.‘’Just let me do all the talking unless someone asks you a question,’’ Asher whispers. When we make our way to the podium, that is where more pictures are snapped of us and people begin to fire question after question.‘’Asher, can you tell us about this marriage? How did it come about?’’ one woman asks.‘’Why did you get married?’’ someone e

“Asher, can you confirm if what your wife said is true?’’ Aaron asks. ‘’I don't know what she said,’’ is Asher’s only reply. The next thing I know, Asher is pulling me down the stairs. I try to pull away from him, but his grip is too strong. ‘’Would you let go of me?’’ ‘’Sorry, it's just that I don’t want this to escalate. I know how these reporters can get.’’ ‘’No, I’m sorry. I should have known better than to talk to anyone here.’’ I tell him. Asher stops to look t me. ‘’No, I shouldn’t have let you out of my sight. I know how this place can be. I should have done more to keep you away from Leonard.’’ ‘’That's his name?’’ I ask. ‘’Yes, but don’t worry about it.’’ Asher takes my hand again and begins to lead me to the car when the female he was with earlier stops us. ‘’Asher, don’t tell me that you are leaving.’’ “Yes, sorry, but my wife isn’t feeling too well. Plus, there has been an incident I don’t want her to stick around and be exposed to much of this.’’ Asher nods at

When I disembark the plane, it takes everything in me to not start kissing the ground. `A black SUV pulls up not long after and a handsome man who looks identical to Asher steps. Aside from his good looks, I notice him wearing a cowboy hat, blue jeans, and brown leather boots.‘’Where are we exactly?’’ I ask Asher.‘’Heywood Hall.’’‘’Oh.’’‘’What?’’ he gives me a look.‘’Nothing.’’How can I tell him I know all about his hot girlfriend he cheated on?When we get to where he is leaning on the car and chewing on a twig, a smile breaks out on his face.‘’You must be Angela, Asher’s wife,’’ he says.‘’Her name is Millie and you know this.’’ Asher frowns at him.‘’Oh, right? You have a different woman each week. It is hard to keep up.’’‘’Rich, please don’t start something you can’t finish,’’ Asher warns. He ignores Asher and reaches a hand toward me. ‘’Richard Thomas, but you can call me Rich.’’I look down at his hand because I hope he isn’t expecting me to be nice to him after the lit

I look over at Millie to see that she isn't enjoying herself. She just sits on a bar stool, gazing out into space and not even drinking her drink.I sigh because clearly neither of us is used to the lifestyle of the other. She is too... I don't even know how to explain her behavior.I place my drink down on the side of the pool table and walk over to her.''Would you like to leave?''''Please.'' She nods.''Ok.''When we get into the cool air, I pause on the curb and thought Millie would have done the same, but she foolishly steps into the path of a coming car. If it isn't for quick actions with me pulling her back and the driver swerving to the right. She would have been a goner. She looks up at me, and I squeeze her trembling hand.''Are you ok?''''Yes, thank you.''I continue to hold her chilly hands in mine as we cross the road to the parking lot where the driver is waiting for us.Millie squeezes my hand, and she looks up at me, then quickly looks away and I wonder what that is
