Chapter 3

Author: Lumi
I froze where I stood, my heart sinking.

So he didn't love me anymore.

He'd fallen for someone else, yet still wanted me to fall in line.

I shook my head with a bitter laugh and walked away.

Late that night, Kael came back to our bedroom and pulled me into his arms.

He still smelled like Talia, and I pushed him away without thinking.

"What's wrong?"

Kael spoke as if he were discussing something ordinary.

"I plan to make Talia a countess so she'll have more influence. What do you think?"

I got up with my pillow and lay down on the sofa. "It's your kingdom. You decide," I said flatly.

A smile lit Kael's eyes, and he pushed his luck.

"Then I'd like her to manage your lands too."

That meant every bit of power I had would go to Talia.

But I was already divorced from Kael, so I didn't care anymore.

I nodded and said only, "Fine. I agree."

Kael was thrilled and immediately started praising me.

"Maren, only a smart woman like you can help keep the peace between the kingdom and the sea."

He thought he'd tamed me completely by putting me down, threatening me, and then offering a little praise.

I lay down with my back to him. The bedroom was so quiet I could hear the waves breaking on the rocks.

In the distance, Talia was calling to him with her song.

Kael got up with a rustle and told me, "Maren, I've still got some work to do. Go to sleep."

I ignored him. Later, the singing stopped.

The next day, Kael announced his decision in front of everyone.

Talia, newly made a countess, stood proudly on the dais as control of my lands passed to her.

The ministers were stunned.

At the handover ceremony, Talia wore a gorgeous gown and practically glowed.

She leaned in close to my ear and whispered, "Maren, we both come from the sea. Why should I be beneath you?"

To everyone else, it looked like she was giving me a polite kiss on the cheek.

Talia's eyes glinted with challenge. She seemed to be trying to bait me into losing my temper in front of everyone, but she was wrong.

I turned my head and looked at her calmly. "Is that so? Then I hope you'll show us what you can do."

I didn't cry or make a scene. I even placed the seal of authority in Talia's palm as Kael watched with a faint smile.

The ministers shook their heads.

They thought the princess they'd once served had lost all power.

But I knew all of this was just for show.

Sea trade, peace between our peoples, and the loyalty of our best commanders had never depended on that little seal.

Talia stepped solemnly into the middle of the crowd and made her announcement.

"Thank you, Prince Kael, for trusting me. From now on, I'll give everything I have to serve the kingdom."

After the ceremony, Kael followed me out and continued to threaten me.

"Maren, I want you to learn from Talia, or I'll keep freezing you out."

I didn't answer.

Kael's lips pressed into a hard line, and he was about to snap at me.

Just then, Talia came running over in a panic.

She'd barely started the job, and she'd already run into a problem she couldn't solve.

My daughter, Maren, is now Queen of the Deep Sea."The whole ocean cheered for me.A few days later, I received a letter."Your Majesty, this arrived from the royal city as a gesture of goodwill. It seems he wants to mend relations and open new trade routes."I flipped through the letter.Kael and Talia came to mind. After I left that day, riots broke out in the royal city.A loyal minister managed to get Kael back to the palace. As for Talia, she was beaten to death by the mob, terrified out of her mind.Back at the palace, Kael fared no better. Kael had handed Talia over, but deep down, he feared things wouldn't get better."Maren..."Kael buried his face in his hands and let out a despairing sob.Meanwhile, deep beneath the sea, I was enjoying a meal when the news reached me.I swirled the drink in my cup and scoffed."He's handing over Talia to make peace? Is one siren really worth that much?"On the beach, Talia was bound in heavy iron chains. She shook as she screamed."Get away! You ignorant humans, get away!"They'd drugged her to keep her from singing and bewitching anyone. Now her voice was rough and ugly.I walked up to her slowly and looked coldly at what she'd become. When Talia saw me, she got even angrier. Her voice came out harsh and grating. "You must be loving this, seeing me brought this low!"We both come from the deep sea, so why were you born a noble mermaid princess while I'm stuck being a siren!"I answered calmly, "Because I've never put my fate in a man's hands."You think you lost to me, but you reall

The royal city was in chaos. With the peace treaty broken, merfolk and sirens who'd always resented its restrictions began attacking humans.Houses were swept away, and the dead and wounded lay everywhere.Food ran out, and people fought over a single loaf of bread. They even banded together and gathered at the palace gates, chanting in unison."Execute the siren! Execute the siren!"Their roar seemed loud enough to shake the palace gates. They wanted to hang Talia, the one who'd caused it all.The palace was so tense it was hard to breathe.Kael's eyes were sunken, and he looked completely defeated. He realized that without the peace treaty between the kingdom and the sea, he was powerless.Aldric, one of the ministers, spoke up in anguish. "Your Highness, the peoples of the deep and all your subjects are waiting for you to speak."If we don't come up with something fast, the kingdom is finished!"Kael's face was grim, and Aldric dropped to his knees."Your Highness, for the sake of t

The moment the water closed over my head, I felt happier than words could say.The royal city's stuffy incense was gone. Warm currents brushed my cheeks. My mother called my name, crying."My daughter! My Maren!"I saw my mother's long hair floating around her, my father's beard trembling, and my only sister watching me with red eyes.I couldn't help crying too.My mother and my sister threw their arms around me, their hands shaking as they stroked my back.My mother sobbed so hard she could barely speak. "You've gotten so thin. My Maren must have suffered so much on land."My sister looked up. "Maren, I missed you so much."My father gripped the Sea King's scepter. "That Kael is nothing but a liar!"I'll raise a tidal wave and drown the whole land, then drag Kael and that stupid siren down here to pay with their lives!"My father turned to leave in a rage, but I grabbed his arm. "Don't, Father."He couldn't believe it. "Maren, after everything they put you through, you want me to let

Kael's voice shook as he stared at the royal seal on the divorce decree."A divorce decree? That's impossible!"Maren, when did you... trick me into putting my seal on it?"I gave him a cold smile. "While you were lying on deck listening to Talia sing."Kael went still. He remembered. Back then, I'd been sick, but he'd left me behind because he'd insisted on touring the deep sea with Talia. He suddenly roared, "Maren, you set me up?"Kael's face twisted with fury, and his hands shook. "You're jealous of how close Talia and I are, so you're using divorce to get my attention?"I laughed. "Don't flatter yourself. I only stayed to hand over my work. I wasn't going to let some foolish siren who'd barged in out of nowhere destroy the peace we fought so hard to win."But now I was leaving."Who said you could leave? How dare you pull a stunt like this just to spite me!" Kael tried to grab my arm to keep me there.Just then, Talia stumbled in.Her voice was thick with tears. "Your Highness, pl

Talia nearly tripped over her fancy skirt as she stumbled up the steps. She didn't even try to maintain the poise expected of a new countess. She brushed past me and handed the paper in her fist straight to Kael.Talia's voice shook. "Your Highness, we received word from the northern sea trade route. The merfolk there refuse to recognize my authority. They've seized our merchant ships and injured our officials."Her eyes flicked toward me as she complained, "Those fish don't take me seriously at all..."Kael's brows drew together. The arrogance from his talk with me hadn't faded yet.Seeing Talia panic, he said gently, "Calm down. You're a countess of the kingdom now. One stretch of sea isn't worth getting this upset over."Kael skimmed the paper, and his face darkened.I imitated Talia and leaned close to her cheek."Talia, it's time to show what you can do. Don't let His Highness down. Good luck."Leaving her with that sour look on her face, I walked away smiling.Sooner or later, th
