Chapter 4

Author: Lumi
Talia nearly tripped over her fancy skirt as she stumbled up the steps.

She didn't even try to maintain the poise expected of a new countess. She brushed past me and handed the paper in her fist straight to Kael.

Talia's voice shook. "Your Highness, we received word from the northern sea trade route. The merfolk there refuse to recognize my authority. They've seized our merchant ships and injured our officials."

Her eyes flicked toward me as she complained, "Those fish don't take me seriously at all..."

Kael's brows drew together. The arrogance from his talk with me hadn't faded yet.

Seeing Talia panic, he said gently, "Calm down. You're a countess of the kingdom now. One stretch of sea isn't worth getting this upset over."

Kael skimmed the paper, and his face darkened.

I imitated Talia and leaned close to her cheek.

"Talia, it's time to show what you can do. Don't let His Highness down. Good luck."

Leaving her with that sour look on her face, I walked away smiling.

Sooner or later, they'd learn that on the open sea, the power behind that royal seal meant nothing. It was just a pretty stone.

At first, Talia forced herself to keep going to prove she was worth something.

She sailed out to negotiate with the other merfolk and even considered using force to keep the deep sea in line.

She stood on the deck of the flagship and sang her alluring siren song, trying to take control of their minds.

But she hadn't expected to find herself with no one she could rely on.

Everyone there had come up from the deep just to watch her fail.

Two days later, Talia returned to the royal city in disgrace.

More than half her soldiers were dead or wounded, and the grand fleet was down to a few battered little boats.

Talia looked worn and weather-beaten.

Back in the royal city, Kael was in trouble too.

The trade deals had fallen through, and the kingdom owed a fortune in damages.

But Kael didn't come to me.

He paid it all from his own treasury.

Talia cried, "Kael, you're so good to me."

Kael comforted her helplessly, then turned to look at me with an expression I couldn't read.

I walked away without hesitating.

Nothing and no one in the royal city mattered to me anymore.

I gathered my people and prepared to leave.

Just then, even worse news came from the sea.

Talia had sent people to harvest pearls without permission. They'd crossed into merfolk territory, been treated as pirates, and all been killed.

The kingdom and the deep sea had an agreement: crossing that boundary meant declaring war, no matter which side did it.

Talia is unbelievably stupid!

The waves surged, and once again, merfolk began attacking ordinary people who went out to sea.

Kael finally panicked and came to me for help.

"Maren, the kingdom finally had three years of peace. We can't just stand by and watch it all fall apart!

"You're my wife. We both have a duty to protect the peace between the kingdom and the deep sea."

His eyes pleaded with me.

But I pulled out the divorce decree with his royal seal on it and laughed in his face.

"Kael, we were already divorced the day you went off touring with that siren.

"From now on, land and sea go their separate ways, and you and I are nothing to each other!"

My daughter, Maren, is now Queen of the Deep Sea."The whole ocean cheered for me.A few days later, I received a letter."Your Majesty, this arrived from the royal city as a gesture of goodwill. It seems he wants to mend relations and open new trade routes."I flipped through the letter.Kael and Talia came to mind. After I left that day, riots broke out in the royal city.A loyal minister managed to get Kael back to the palace. As for Talia, she was beaten to death by the mob, terrified out of her mind.Back at the palace, Kael fared no better. Kael had handed Talia over, but deep down, he feared things wouldn't get better."Maren..."Kael buried his face in his hands and let out a despairing sob.Meanwhile, deep beneath the sea, I was enjoying a meal when the news reached me.I swirled the drink in my cup and scoffed."He's handing over Talia to make peace? Is one siren really worth that much?"On the beach, Talia was bound in heavy iron chains. She shook as she screamed."Get away! You ignorant humans, get away!"They'd drugged her to keep her from singing and bewitching anyone. Now her voice was rough and ugly.I walked up to her slowly and looked coldly at what she'd become. When Talia saw me, she got even angrier. Her voice came out harsh and grating. "You must be loving this, seeing me brought this low!"We both come from the deep sea, so why were you born a noble mermaid princess while I'm stuck being a siren!"I answered calmly, "Because I've never put my fate in a man's hands."You think you lost to me, but you reall

The royal city was in chaos. With the peace treaty broken, merfolk and sirens who'd always resented its restrictions began attacking humans.Houses were swept away, and the dead and wounded lay everywhere.Food ran out, and people fought over a single loaf of bread. They even banded together and gathered at the palace gates, chanting in unison."Execute the siren! Execute the siren!"Their roar seemed loud enough to shake the palace gates. They wanted to hang Talia, the one who'd caused it all.The palace was so tense it was hard to breathe.Kael's eyes were sunken, and he looked completely defeated. He realized that without the peace treaty between the kingdom and the sea, he was powerless.Aldric, one of the ministers, spoke up in anguish. "Your Highness, the peoples of the deep and all your subjects are waiting for you to speak."If we don't come up with something fast, the kingdom is finished!"Kael's face was grim, and Aldric dropped to his knees."Your Highness, for the sake of t

The moment the water closed over my head, I felt happier than words could say.The royal city's stuffy incense was gone. Warm currents brushed my cheeks. My mother called my name, crying."My daughter! My Maren!"I saw my mother's long hair floating around her, my father's beard trembling, and my only sister watching me with red eyes.I couldn't help crying too.My mother and my sister threw their arms around me, their hands shaking as they stroked my back.My mother sobbed so hard she could barely speak. "You've gotten so thin. My Maren must have suffered so much on land."My sister looked up. "Maren, I missed you so much."My father gripped the Sea King's scepter. "That Kael is nothing but a liar!"I'll raise a tidal wave and drown the whole land, then drag Kael and that stupid siren down here to pay with their lives!"My father turned to leave in a rage, but I grabbed his arm. "Don't, Father."He couldn't believe it. "Maren, after everything they put you through, you want me to let

Kael's voice shook as he stared at the royal seal on the divorce decree."A divorce decree? That's impossible!"Maren, when did you... trick me into putting my seal on it?"I gave him a cold smile. "While you were lying on deck listening to Talia sing."Kael went still. He remembered. Back then, I'd been sick, but he'd left me behind because he'd insisted on touring the deep sea with Talia. He suddenly roared, "Maren, you set me up?"Kael's face twisted with fury, and his hands shook. "You're jealous of how close Talia and I are, so you're using divorce to get my attention?"I laughed. "Don't flatter yourself. I only stayed to hand over my work. I wasn't going to let some foolish siren who'd barged in out of nowhere destroy the peace we fought so hard to win."But now I was leaving."Who said you could leave? How dare you pull a stunt like this just to spite me!" Kael tried to grab my arm to keep me there.Just then, Talia stumbled in.Her voice was thick with tears. "Your Highness, pl
