Chapter 1

Author: Explosive King
The laughter and revelry died at once. The assembled gods stared at me in stunned silence.

With the Atlas of Dominion in my grasp, I summoned the Crown of the First Sun, an ancient power carried only by the bloodline of the High Kings. Its blazing radiance illuminated every corner of Silvermere Palace.

Garrick, God of Horses, sprang to his feet and roared, “You dare seize the relic His Majesty bestowed upon the Divine Heir?! You insolent servan—”

I regarded him with cold contempt. The air trembled beneath the weight of my power.

“Your dominion extends no further than the horses of the mortal world, Garrick, yet you dare challenge me?

“Open your eyes and look closely. I am the only son and rightful heir of High King Caelion and the sun goddess Aurelia!”

“Only a fool eager for death would recognize that wretched sparrow as the Divine Heir!

“Guards, strip him of his magic and cast him into the Underworld, where a storm of iron arrows will pierce him anew with every dawn!”

In the original timeline, Garrick had ingratiated himself with Corvin, the false Divine Heir. When I ventured beyond Southwatch Gate, he had ambushed and murdered me.

Since I had been sent back through time to the day of my coming-of-age ceremony, he would be the first to pay.

After watching me boldly reclaim the Atlas of Dominion, the gods attending the Silvermere banquet began glancing between Corvin and me.

Garrick cowered on the floor and turned a pleading gaze toward my nine sisters.

Seravelle, my eldest sister, rounded on me with fury.

“Auren, have you lost your mind? You ruined the Silvermere banquet and attacked the Divine Heir! Do you have a death wish?”

I stared into Seravelle’s furious eyes. Nearby, my other eight sisters surrounded Corvin and wove healing magic over him. For a moment, the sight left me disoriented.

I was High King Caelion’s only son and had long been living in Sunrest Vale to restore my health. Corvin was merely a common sparrow I had happened to rescue on my return to the High Realm.

For some reason, all nine of my sisters were captivated by him from the instant they saw him.

They lavished all their affection on him and repeatedly told the other gods that Corvin was their true brother.

Meanwhile, they treated me as little more than a servant, ordering me about whenever it pleased them.

After being cast back through time, I finally understood the situation.

I was a golden Dawnwing, one of the most exalted sun-born creatures in existence. My father was Caelion, High King of the Three Realms, and my mother was Aurelia, the sun goddess whose light sustained all creation.

As their only son, the Divine Heir, and the future ruler of the Three Realms, why should I allow some gutter-born sparrow to steal my name and birthright?

My nine sisters had proven themselves unworthy of the power and titles they held. Why should I continue to regard them as family?

Anyone who dared defy me would discover how keen the edge of my blade was.

If they tried to stand between me and my destiny again, I would not hesitate to kill them. Their blood would pave my path to the throne.

I rose effortlessly into the air until I towered above Seravelle.

“A death wish? The blood of the High King runs through my veins. I have every right to strike a witless sparrow.”

Seravelle gave a contemptuous snort.

“Corvin is Father’s beloved youngest son. Return the Atlas and beg his forgiveness before everyone here, and I may show you mercy.”

I tightened my grip on the Atlas of Dominion and sneered.

“Do you not even recognize your own brother? Call Father here and repeat those words to his face.

“I let everything else go, but the Atlas of Dominion was Father’s coming-of-age gift to me. Must you take even that and hand it to him?”

The assembled gods looked from Corvin to me and back again.

Corvin stepped forward and took Seravelle’s hand. He said with practiced consideration, “Let it go, Seravelle. I’m to blame for failing to teach him better after I rescued him.

“As children of the High King, we should show compassion to those beneath us. Let him have his way this once.

“Besides, he has no idea how to use the Atlas of Dominion. Let him borrow it for now.”

His words made me scoff in disbelief.

“You witless bird, I saved your life, yet you stand there pretending you rescued me. Had I known what you truly were, I would’ve left you to drown!”

My words drained the color from Corvin’s face. Several of my sisters hurried to reassure him.

“You’re too kind, Corvin. You saved his life, yet Auren repays you with nothing but contempt!”

“Auren, get over here and apologize to Corvin! Otherwise, I’ll have you dragged to the gods’ execution grounds!”

I could hardly believe that my own sisters would say such cruel words to me.

I tightened my grip on the Atlas of Dominion as power gathered around me, growing stronger with every breath.

“You dare presume to command me?”

Elvarra, my second-oldest sister, said coldly, “Very well. Since you insist that you’re the true Divine Heir, submit to the Mirror of True Forms and let it reveal the truth.”

My eyes widened. Were they actually going to use the Mirror of True Forms on me? Had they lost their minds?

When I remained silent, Seravelle smiled triumphantly.

“What’s wrong? Has the mere mention of the mirror frightened you? Renounce your claim and beg Corvin’s forgiveness now, and we may still spare your life!”

Hesitation crossed my face, but inwardly, I was already laughing.

They could protect Corvin all they wanted. The Mirror of True Forms would still expose him.

“When the mirror exposes what you really are, no one can save you!” Corvin taunted me.

“Silence, you lowborn sparrow. You forget whose presence you stand in.”

With a flick of my finger, my blade flashed past him and severed a lock of his hair.

“You vicious creature! How dare you attack the Divine Heir again?! Bring the Mirror of True Forms at once! We shall expose his true form before everyone here!”

A cold smile lingered on my lips. The Mirror of True Forms would soon reveal which of us was the impostor.

“Do you expect me to believe that you feel nothing about this? The woman you love chose me. You must be jealous.”I had no interest in arguing with him. Since Elowyn had chosen Corvin, I would never allow her back into my life.Who Corvin chose to marry was none of my concern.Elowyn, however, took offense at his words. She slapped Corvin.“Don’t flatter yourself. I came here to marry Auren and become the next High Queen. You have nothing to do with it.”Already close to death, Corvin collapsed and cried out in pain. “Your Majesty, these chests contain everything I prepared for my wedding. I consulted a court seer, who confirmed that Auren and I are destined for one another.“She also said that the stars favor a wedding three days from now. I wish to marry the man I’ve always loved.”I stared at Elowyn, stunned by her audacity. As it turned out, she had never loved either of us. She only wanted the crown. The man beneath it did not matter. Before I could respond, Father spo

“Must you turn this family disgrace into a scandal for all Three Realms to witness?” Father bellowed with fury.“Save Corvin, and we’ll let the entire matter rest.” Seravelle insisted.“The oldest laws of magic are at work here. Even I can’t simply overturn their judgment. You turned against your own brother for an impostor. Haven’t you done enough?“Auren will inherit my throne. If you continue to provoke him, not even I can protect you when he becomes High King,” Father warned them.“Does he even deserve your throne? He’s too weak and indecisive to rule!” Elvarra stepped forward and declared.“Perhaps I’ve been too merciful then. Guards, execute every attendant who aided Corvin and erase their spirits from existence. Sever Corvin’s limbs, then use whatever magic is necessary to keep him alive.“I want him to witness exactly how I punish those who challenge the Divine Heir!”At my command, my sisters erupted in protest once more.“You would execute so many of your own people?

“I had intended to execute him for what he did to Auren, but the Final Withering has already taken hold of him. He has only days to live. Take him with you if you wish.”Father waved dismissively.“What?”My sisters all turned toward Father in shock.“How could Corvin be afflicted by the Final Withering? We kept him under constant protection!”“He doesn’t even look like he is dying.”Seravelle suddenly turned toward me. Her eyes were burning with hatred.“Tell me! Was this your doing?”I stared at her, genuinely baffled.“Why would you assume that? How could that possibly be my doing?”Father answered for me. “This is the consequence of your own actions. You forced the Divine Heir into submission before a mortal sparrow.“The divine order itself is punishing him for accepting that submission. He’s fortunate that it didn’t kill him on the spot.”Father spoke calmly, but his words left my sisters staring in horror.“What? How is that possible? We were told it would only shor

Father’s chest rose and fell with barely contained fury. One of his daughters had already died after trying to harm me, and Seravelle had forced me to silence her as well.Even then, Seravelle was still trying to break the silencing spell. All her life, she had been Father’s favorite daughter, pampered and protected from every consequence. She could not accept that she had been punished because of me.Worse still, Corvin had witnessed her humiliation. In her mind, I was entirely to blame for making her look weak before the man she loved. Breathing hard, she finally broke through my spell and staggered to her feet.Ignoring her injuries, she protested, “Father, you’ve always been too lenient with Auren. As his eldest sister, I was only trying to correct his behavior. What exactly did I do wrong?”That was the last thing Father needed to hear.“He is my son and heir. I know him far better than you ever could, so don’t presume to tell me how to raise him. I asked you to protect your

Corvin weakly spoke up in support of Seravelle.“That’s right. It was all meant to test him. We never intended to harm the heir!”One of Father’s guards strode forward and punched him.“You’re nothing but a mortal bird, with no rank or standing in the High Realm. Do not address the High King without permission.”The guard showed no concern for Corvin’s weakened state. The blow sent blood spilling from his mouth. My sisters immediately panicked at the sight. They immediately spoke up in Corvin’s defense.“Father, Corvin is still a living soul deserving of mercy. He only spoke because he feared you might condemn us after hearing Auren’s side of the story alone.”“Exactly. Auren’s return as the High King’s son placed him at the center of everyone’s attention, making him an obvious target.“We only put him through this test to protect him from anyone who might infiltrate the palace to harm him.”Seeing them rush to Corvin’s defense, Father’s anger erupted. His gaze swept over eve

I recognized that hand at once. A broad smile spread across my face.“Father, I’ve been waiting for you.”Before the stunned crowd could react, my father appeared in the banquet hall.I rushed over and embraced him, barely able to contain my excitement. The assembled gods stood frozen. They lowered their eyes and pretended not to stare, but their shock was impossible to hide. The guards at Father’s side made no move to stop me. That alone told everyone what they needed to know.“We’ve made a terrible mistake. Auren really is the High King’s heir! Who told us he was the fraud?”“So, the nine princesses have been protecting an impostor this entire time?” “No common sparrow would steal the heir’s identity so openly. Someone powerful must be behind him!”Panic flickered across Seravelle’s face when she saw Father arrive. She exchanged a frightened glance with my sisters. Then, they hurriedly stood at attention, each pressing a hand over her heart in formal greeting. One look at
