Chapter 2

Author: Explosive King
Moments later, a company of the High Guard approached with grim expressions.

Before their commander could reach my nine sisters, Seravelle spoke bitterly.

“You still have time to apologize to Corvin before we use the Mirror of True Forms on you. Otherwise, when it reveals what you really are, I’ll strip you of your powers and banish you to the mortal world.”

When I recognized Brannoc, the God of War, leading them, I could only marvel at Seravelle’s stupidity.

Brannoc was one of the few true friends I had in the High Realm.

In the original timeline, when my nine sisters tormented me, Brannoc never once wavered in his support.

When he learned of my death, he wept as he laid me to rest. Then, he reversed the flow of the Starfall River and sent its waters crashing through my sisters’ palace.

I would not let my best friend mourn me again.

“Good to see you again, Brannoc,” I said with a smile.

At the sound of my voice, he hesitated before his expression darkened. “You insolent creature, how dare you address me by name?”

Seravelle demanded, “Use the mirror, Brannoc! This creature is posing as the Divine Heir. Show everyone what he really is!”

Brannoc nodded and raised the Mirror of True Forms. In its reflection, I watched myself transform into a scrawny sparrow with a lame leg.

My mind went completely blank.

How was that possible?

Elvarra watched with open amusement before letting out a scornful laugh.

“All that talk about being the rightful heir, and the mirror reveals nothing but a crippled little sparrow.”

The gods stared at the Mirror of True Forms. The moment they saw nothing but a sparrow in its reflection, the hall erupted in outrage.

“This wretched creature ruined a perfectly good banquet at Silvermere Palace. What a disgrace!”

“He has barely spent a few days in the High Realm since His Highness rescued him, and already he thinks he can claim the throne. How revolting!”

Corvin cleared his throat. “My lords and ladies, this little sparrow comes from the mortal world and knows nothing of our ways.

“Please forgive him for disrupting the banquet. I’ll host another grand feast to make up for what happened today.”

The jeers showed no sign of stopping. Brannoc exchanged a glance with my sisters before finally turning toward me.

“Why?”

I had never expected that after being sent back through time, someone I had trusted in the original timeline would suddenly betray me.

Seeing him turn against me hurt more than I expected.

Brannoc studied me in silence for a long while before speaking.

“The title of Divine Heir is not yours to claim.”

I gave a bitter smile and shook my head, unable to hide the disappointment in my voice.

“Brannoc, you’ve made a terrible mistake.”

Seravelle approached and looked at me with disgust.

“Father himself named Brannoc the God of War and placed every legion in the High Realm under his command. Are you really arrogant enough to question the High King’s judgment?”

Brannoc broke into a broad grin and pointed at me. “What mistake? If Corvin isn’t the rightful heir, may I be stripped of my godhood and transformed into a pig!”

Hearing Brannoc made his oath, Elvarra seized her chance. “High Guard, seize this creature for impersonating the Divine Heir!”

The armed guards closed in around me with their weapons drawn.

I had no intention of surrendering without a fight. Sunfire erupted around me as the ancient sigil of the High Kings blazed to life upon my brow.

“Look closely and decide which of us is the rightful heir. Would you truly raise your weapons against your future king?”

The force of my power stopped them cold. Doubt spread through the hall.

“Only those who carry the High King’s blood can bear that sigil or summon such sunfire. Could he really be…”

“Auren hasn’t lost his composure once. Corvin, on the other hand, has hardly carried himself like a future king…”

The gods began debating in hushed voices, uncertain whom to believe. My nine sisters’ expressions grew increasingly strained.

Just then, a cold, clear voice cut through the whispers.

“Your illusion is convincing enough to pass for the real thing. Unfortunately, cheap tricks may fool everyone else, but they will never fool me.”

As she spoke, a graceful woman entered the hall, leaving a trail of blossoms in her wake.

It was none other than Elowyn, the Goddess of Flowers, who was also my betrothed.

She crossed the hall and stopped beside Corvin. After taking his hand, she finally turned her cold gaze on me.

“Even if you could imitate the sunfire of the High Kings, the Mirror of True Forms has already exposed you as a common sparrow. You aren’t my beloved.”

“Do you expect me to believe that you feel nothing about this? The woman you love chose me. You must be jealous.”I had no interest in arguing with him. Since Elowyn had chosen Corvin, I would never allow her back into my life.Who Corvin chose to marry was none of my concern.Elowyn, however, took offense at his words. She slapped Corvin.“Don’t flatter yourself. I came here to marry Auren and become the next High Queen. You have nothing to do with it.”Already close to death, Corvin collapsed and cried out in pain. “Your Majesty, these chests contain everything I prepared for my wedding. I consulted a court seer, who confirmed that Auren and I are destined for one another.“She also said that the stars favor a wedding three days from now. I wish to marry the man I’ve always loved.”I stared at Elowyn, stunned by her audacity. As it turned out, she had never loved either of us. She only wanted the crown. The man beneath it did not matter. Before I could respond, Father spo

“Must you turn this family disgrace into a scandal for all Three Realms to witness?” Father bellowed with fury.“Save Corvin, and we’ll let the entire matter rest.” Seravelle insisted.“The oldest laws of magic are at work here. Even I can’t simply overturn their judgment. You turned against your own brother for an impostor. Haven’t you done enough?“Auren will inherit my throne. If you continue to provoke him, not even I can protect you when he becomes High King,” Father warned them.“Does he even deserve your throne? He’s too weak and indecisive to rule!” Elvarra stepped forward and declared.“Perhaps I’ve been too merciful then. Guards, execute every attendant who aided Corvin and erase their spirits from existence. Sever Corvin’s limbs, then use whatever magic is necessary to keep him alive.“I want him to witness exactly how I punish those who challenge the Divine Heir!”At my command, my sisters erupted in protest once more.“You would execute so many of your own people?

“I had intended to execute him for what he did to Auren, but the Final Withering has already taken hold of him. He has only days to live. Take him with you if you wish.”Father waved dismissively.“What?”My sisters all turned toward Father in shock.“How could Corvin be afflicted by the Final Withering? We kept him under constant protection!”“He doesn’t even look like he is dying.”Seravelle suddenly turned toward me. Her eyes were burning with hatred.“Tell me! Was this your doing?”I stared at her, genuinely baffled.“Why would you assume that? How could that possibly be my doing?”Father answered for me. “This is the consequence of your own actions. You forced the Divine Heir into submission before a mortal sparrow.“The divine order itself is punishing him for accepting that submission. He’s fortunate that it didn’t kill him on the spot.”Father spoke calmly, but his words left my sisters staring in horror.“What? How is that possible? We were told it would only shor

Father’s chest rose and fell with barely contained fury. One of his daughters had already died after trying to harm me, and Seravelle had forced me to silence her as well.Even then, Seravelle was still trying to break the silencing spell. All her life, she had been Father’s favorite daughter, pampered and protected from every consequence. She could not accept that she had been punished because of me.Worse still, Corvin had witnessed her humiliation. In her mind, I was entirely to blame for making her look weak before the man she loved. Breathing hard, she finally broke through my spell and staggered to her feet.Ignoring her injuries, she protested, “Father, you’ve always been too lenient with Auren. As his eldest sister, I was only trying to correct his behavior. What exactly did I do wrong?”That was the last thing Father needed to hear.“He is my son and heir. I know him far better than you ever could, so don’t presume to tell me how to raise him. I asked you to protect your

Corvin weakly spoke up in support of Seravelle.“That’s right. It was all meant to test him. We never intended to harm the heir!”One of Father’s guards strode forward and punched him.“You’re nothing but a mortal bird, with no rank or standing in the High Realm. Do not address the High King without permission.”The guard showed no concern for Corvin’s weakened state. The blow sent blood spilling from his mouth. My sisters immediately panicked at the sight. They immediately spoke up in Corvin’s defense.“Father, Corvin is still a living soul deserving of mercy. He only spoke because he feared you might condemn us after hearing Auren’s side of the story alone.”“Exactly. Auren’s return as the High King’s son placed him at the center of everyone’s attention, making him an obvious target.“We only put him through this test to protect him from anyone who might infiltrate the palace to harm him.”Seeing them rush to Corvin’s defense, Father’s anger erupted. His gaze swept over eve

I recognized that hand at once. A broad smile spread across my face.“Father, I’ve been waiting for you.”Before the stunned crowd could react, my father appeared in the banquet hall.I rushed over and embraced him, barely able to contain my excitement. The assembled gods stood frozen. They lowered their eyes and pretended not to stare, but their shock was impossible to hide. The guards at Father’s side made no move to stop me. That alone told everyone what they needed to know.“We’ve made a terrible mistake. Auren really is the High King’s heir! Who told us he was the fraud?”“So, the nine princesses have been protecting an impostor this entire time?” “No common sparrow would steal the heir’s identity so openly. Someone powerful must be behind him!”Panic flickered across Seravelle’s face when she saw Father arrive. She exchanged a frightened glance with my sisters. Then, they hurriedly stood at attention, each pressing a hand over her heart in formal greeting. One look at
